Title: Take Your Last Breath

Subtitle: Ruby Redfort, Book 2

Author: Lauren Child

Narrator: Rachael Stirling

Format: Unabridged

Length: 7 hrs and 48 mins

Language: English

Release date: 09-25-14

Publisher: HarperCollins Publishers Limited

Genres: Kids, Ages 8-10

Publisher's Summary:

Hey, buster! Normal life is a total yawn. Break out of boredom with this super-awesome series from multi-million-copy best seller Lauren Child. And get ready to meet Ruby Redfort: code-cracking genius. Intrepid detective. Schoolgirl.

Ruby Redfort burst onto the scene in October 2011, and, in the words of Julia Eccleshare, "put imagination and fun back into childhood".

Now, everyone's favourite girl detective is back for a second mind-blowing instalment, packed with all the off-the-wall humour, action, and friendship of the first book. This time, though, it's an adventure on the wide open ocean, and Ruby is all at sea. Can she crack the case of the Twinford pirates while evading the clutches of a vile sea monster as well as the evil Count von Viscount? Well, you wouldn't want to bet against her.

Critic Reviews:

Praise for Ruby Redfort:

"Lauren Child has put imagination and fun back into the real worlds of childhood." (Julia Eccleshare, Guardian)

\"What more could adventure-loving girls want?" (The Sunday Times)

Members Reviews:

The narration is dreadful

The narration of this brilliant story is so dreadful that we had to stop listening. My daughter loves all these books because shes both a Lauren Childs and a spy story fan, but whoever is narrating this makes all the genius-level characters and instructors sound like bored, sarcastic, lobotomised surf dudes, and makes Mrs Drisco sound like an hysterical lunatic. Completely ruined it!

My daughter loves this book!

My daughter loves this book!

Another great Lies Bat book.

Another great book by one of my favorite children's' author and publisher Brian Lies. We have all of these books in our library and just like in previous books, look closely at the illustrations to see hints about what bands are playing and who the bat artists are mimicking. The rhyming is not quite as smooth as in previous books, but my kids still love hearing this over and over.

Try reading this and playing one or two of the kid friendly songs from the bands mentioned or illustrated. Lots of fun.

PERFECT!!

PRICELESS!!! PERFECT!!!! I bought this for my 4 year old granddaughter for Christmas. It came today and I just finished looking through it. She is going to flip over it! I did!!! The artwork is fantastic.... the bagpipe playing bat got to me! The only critique I might have is that it should come with a musical CD to play along with the reading. Other than that, it hit ALL the high notes!!! Thank you Brian Lies for reminding us that imagination is still alive and well in this modern day.

Lovely lyrics, gorgeous pictures

I bought it for my grand daughter to add to her Bat Books collection, and had to read it first because there's nothing better in the world of picture books than Brian Lies' gorgeous illustrations. The book is a feast for the eyes with lovely lyrics, perfect length for a bedtime read. It was a thrill to see the Priscilla Beach Theatre we love so much hosting Brain's jammin' bats. Now I'm going to have to get another copy for my grownup son. :-)

Let's 'Hang' Out with the Bats

I like it very much. Bats on the Beach may still be my favorite.

Critic Reviews:

"This is the most fun you can have, short of rounding up King Arthur's knights, filling their armour with laughing gas and driving them to a roller disco." (Frank Cottrell Boyce, bestselling author of Millions)

Members Reviews:

Series just keeps getting better - age 7 plus

The boys (aged 7 and 9) and I are having a whale of a time listening to this series and the third book didn't disappoint. From the knowing winks of the narrator ("Just wait till you get to the end ...") to the crazy action sequences involving sea serpents, giants, impossibly huge armored bugs, to the fact that the Great and Powerful Bandit King is actually 11, I practically can't find anything bad to say about this recording.

The only bad things is this - because the action rattles a long at speed, and there are LOTS of great jokes & a rather complicated plot, it's not ideal to be listened to in stop / start journeys like the school run. You could really do with time to listen to at least half an hour or so in one go, preferably longer. Having said that, don't let me put you off. The kids loved it.

Bronson Pinchot has a fabulous speaking voice and does lots of different characterizations. My favorite has to be the Southern Elf bounty hunter with his giant mongoose. However the boys point out that he has changed some of the characterization from the last book - probably because Bronson has a vast cast to deal with. There is also a bit more romantic interest in this one and (shock) a couple of kisses.

The brand new and final novel from the magical pen of the Godmother of Fantasy', Diana Wynne Jones; co-authored with her sister Ursula Jones.

How are you supposed to turn into a Wise Woman if your powers just won't show up? Aileen is convinced she'll never become as magical as her Aunt Beck. Then one day her aunt is set a seemingly impossible mission. She must go to the island of Logra and rescue the kidnapped High Prince from the enemy, and Aileen must go with her.

They set off along with Ivar, Aileen's spoilt cousin, and Ogo his clophopping servant, recruiting on their way a huge and elusive cat, a monk with an uncannily wise parrot, and a boy inventor who keeps a pet lizard up his sleeve. But this is no band of mighty warriors, and the evil Lograns and their wizards have blocked their way with an invisible barrier in the sea. Aileen doubts that even with all the magic in the Islands of Chaldea, including Aunt Beck's, they will be able to penetrate it.

But Aileen is about to discover that she could be more important to the mission than she realises. Perhaps it is her, above all, who is being drawn to Logra, and for a very special purpose

Beware

Never marry for money alone. And don't open doors that aren't meant for you. Ladies, I hope we aren't as easily led as that.

Interesting, but..

This is a very interesting story, but it is too short. I expected something more.

By the way, illustrations are beautiful.
