    Marvelous Special Sound Effects!!!
Although I have been an Audible listener for several years, this is the first review I have written. (Shame on me!) Anyway, I was moved to write this review because this was, I think, the most enjoyable listening experience I have had so far!! Really! This book is Fantasy, which as a rule, I don't usually care for because I can't always "get into the setting", but this one was different. I could go on and on, but when someone is singing or chanting a spell, you hear it in the background. When they are on a boat, you hear the water splashing against the boat and the boat creaks. I was totally drawn into the story and was very sad when it was over THis is the first of a trilogy, so I will be eagerly awaiting the rest!!! I think everyone would enjoy the book, but women will especially enjoy the book because of the main character, a young woman who is very independant and strong. Many fantasies are "geared" more for men, I feel.
    Fairly routine fantasy, interesting universe
I found this to be fairly routine fantasy writing (not that this is a bad thing) - I was somehow reminded of Ursula K. LeGuin's "Wizard of Earthsea" books. The sound effects mentioned in the other review were an interesting addition - I'm not usually a fan of hearing anything but the narrator, but here they were not (generally) out of place. The narrator's voice is pleasant, and although the story lags in places and does not make for particularly challenging listening, it is a reasonably enjoyable tour through an interesting world of magic populated with likeable and realistic people.
The second time I couldn't finish it
This is the second time that I've tried and failed to finish listening to this audio book. It's too bad, because I'm sure it's a fine story, but the background sound effects are so distracting that both times I've found myself unable to follow the story when they are at their heaviest. I'm a great consumer of audio books and have had this one in my library for over a year, but can't seem to care enough about the story to stick with it. I don't think it's the quality of writing that's turning me off - it's the constant noise distraction.
Plus, the singing is incredibly discordant. It hurts my ears. It's not pleasant to listen to. My hope is that the producer either re-does this book without the background singing, or at the very least requires the singers to sing in the same key. As it is, the effect is like nails on a chalkboard.
I'm planning on buying this book and reading it. I have a feeling it's a nice fantasy story, if slightly cliche, and I'd like to experience the book as the author intended it to be experienced. I'm afraid I can only give the audio version two stars.
    Enchanting
    An enchanting story.

I thought this book deserved 5 stars when ranked against other books of its kind. It was an easy, light read that still conveyed a great message. The heroine in this book learned to take an active stance against injustice in her school. She managed to stop some bullying and along the way find some romance. I think the message is a good one for both youth and adults. What injustices are present in our world that we just accept as part of life? We, like the main character in this novel, may find that we can do a great deal of good if we only put our minds to it.

This is a really good book, and if you love teen drama then this book is perfect for you.

    Christian Fantasy
I do wish there was a catagory specifically for Christian fantasy.
This book was pretty much about a messianic figure converting the heathens to Christianity in Great Britian- while fighting a priest who wishes to destroy God ala Lucifer.
It wasn't really to my taste, as I prefer a subtler, allegorical approach to religion in my fantasy.
    it's a great book
a REALLY good book. Not just good, GREAT. You definitely want to hear this book. The narrator's accent is not difficult to understand. (Review by my 10-year-old son, who listened to it on a long trip.)
Great Read...and great book for a first try.
Very interesting book...set in the 1600's or 1700's. It is a tale mixing magic and religion, having treasure, enchanted artifacts, angels and demons. I may read the second in the series. Good first book for GP Taylor.

The tales of the Norse gods, of the giants, demons, trolls and dwarves, still have the power to fascinate more than a thousand years after they were first told. Here are the stories of the one-eyed god Odin, the all-seeing, who from his throne in Asgard the home of the gods, has to prepare for Ragnarok, the final conflict between good and evil. There are tales too of Tyr the god of war, of the cunning Loki, of Thor the mighty thunder god and a host of others. These retellings of the old tales are given extra dramatic perspective by the music of Mahler, Greig, Smetana, They come to life as never before.

Musical interludes make my ears bleed
Where does Tales from the Norse Legends rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
on a scale of 1-10 i would say this ranks around a 7 compared to other audio books i have listened to
What did you like best about this story?
Its great information. I really enjoy mythology of all cultures.
What does Benjamin Soames bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
this narrator was better then some..but not he is no roy dotrice :0)
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I did listen to this selection from start to finish while driving.
    Any additional comments?
the Music inbetween each section of the book was awful. not because the music sucked, it was good music, it was just about 120% louder then the narrator. So i had to turn it down...then turn it back up once the story started again.
    lots of fun
I was apprehensive about this knowing nothing about Norse mythology and thinking the names would be too difficult to learn since there seems to be a shortage of vowels in Scandinavia. But I wanted to learn something new and different and boy was I glad I tried this.
These stories were delightful! Some of stories included the creation, how Tyr lost his hand, how Thor got his hammer, and Ragnarok (the twilight of the gods - final battle of good vs evil).
I learned where we got our word berserk from and that Thursday was named after Thor the Norse god of thunder. You'll especially like (or hate) Loki. He causes so much trouble.
After listening to it once, I was interested enough to do a little online research where I quickly learned the spelling of some of the names I had heard in the book. I listened to it again and enjoyed it even more. This was easy to do since it is such a short book.
The narration was also excellent, and it made these tales especially enjoyable. I highly recommend this if you want something a little different but fun.
    Fun Book
This was a fun book to listen to. The narator does a great job of portraying the various characters and getting the listener into the book.
This would be a great book for older kids as well or any one who just enjoys norse mythology.
    Interesting & Fun
It's less about specific mythological stories and more about the overall chronology about the Norse mythos, and it's sometimes oversimplified (Loki Loki Loki!). Nevertheless it's a fun read/listen and entertaining even to those who aren't major fantasy buffs or European pre-history buffs.
Confusing at a times but exciting stories
The audiobook is divided into various sections and each section is a different story. The sections can be listened alone but the later sections should be listened in sequence to make the story flow better.

    Title: The March Against Fear
Subtitle: The Last Great Walk of the Civil Rights Movement and the Emergence of Black Power
    Author: Ann Bausum
    Narrator: Karen Chilton
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 4 hrs and 16 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-12-17
    Publisher: Recorded Books
    Genres: Teens, Ages 11-13
    Publisher's Summary:
James Meredith's 1966 march in Mississippi began as one man's peaceful protest for voter registration and became one of the South's most important demonstrations of the civil rights movement. It brought together leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Stokely Carmichael, who formed an unlikely alliance that resulted in the Black Power movement, which ushered in a new era in the fight for equality.
The retelling of Meredith's story opens on the day of his assassination attempt and goes back in time to recount the moments leading up to that event and its aftermath. Listeners learn about the powerful figures and emerging leaders who joined the over 200-mile walk that became known as the "March Against Fear".
Thoughtfully presented by award-winning author Ann Bausum, this book helps listeners understand the complex issues of fear, injustice, and the challenges of change. It is a history lesson that's as important and relevant today as it was 50 years ago.
    Members Reviews:
A powerfully told slice of the past, the results of which are still with us.
Ann Bausum has told a powerful story about an event I knew next to nothing about, the 1966 March Against Fear, begun by James Meredith and his followers, finished by Martin Luther King Jr., Stokely Carmichael, and other heavyweights of the Civil Rights Era. But unlike the second march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, this march did not go off without a hitch. There were a lot of problems, including disagreements between the leaders, local Mississippi police who were reluctant to provide protection and cities that refused to let the marchers use public land in any way. James Meredith's original intent: demonstrating that a black man could legally walk from the north part of the state all the way to the state capital, Jackson, was soon left by the wayside, as the march instead became an opportunity to get people registered to vote. And Stokely Carmichael used it as a chance to introduce the term 'black power'.
Whatever Carmichael's intent, the term 'black power' did not go over so well with the media and many whites. Unfortunately for Carmichael, the term seemed to conjure visions of riots and blacks wresting power from whites, which scared a lot of people. King and others did their best to soften Carmichael's rhetoric, but the damage had already been done and a lot of the good will that the march had generated fizzled away. This book provides not only a look at a specific series of events, including the sometimes violent response, but it also looks at the changes that the Civil Rights Movement was experiencing along the way. I learned a lot from this book. The book shows that history is rarely smooth sailing, but full of bumps and storms with a few calm patches mixed in. I appreciate Bausum's efforts to share this important event with young readers, the opportunities presented here for discussion and teaching are numerous.
An Effective Look at a mostly forgotten experience.
I'm generally not a reader of Civil Rights history but I was asked to read this book and offer my feelings on the content.
When James Meredith decided to make his "March Against Fear" across Mississippi, some might have wondered how much he considered the consequences of his actions. It was 1966 and the civil rights movement was just heating up in the United States.

    Four Siblings Surviving
This review was approved by me, but written by my reluctantly reading grandson. With his 5 star approval, it is an excellent recommendation for other reluctant readers.
    Review by: J.T.W.
Stranded 2 Trial by Fire was an exciting book! It had one problem after another that the four siblings had to try and solve. The author was very descriptive, and I was able to picture all the problems they had. I gave this book five stars because it held my interest, and I can't wait to read book 3.
This story is about four siblings that were on their uncle's boat while their parents got married and went on their honeymoon. The boat had crashed on an island with the kids trying to survive on their own while learning to get along with each other. The uncle and his first mate Joe had washed away in the life raft. At the end of Book1, the kids fell asleep and when they woke up another storm destroyed what was left of the boat. In Book 2, they had many problems: Carter got sick because he drank dirty water, they had to use their only flare to fight off the wild boars, Vanessa accidentally burnt down their shelter with their only fire, which they had to put out to save the whole woods, they also didn't have drinking water, and the three youngest get trapped on the highest point of the island (or what they call Look Out Point).
The main characters are Vanessa, Carter, Buzz, and Jane. Vanessa is the oldest; she is thirteen and is the problem solver and the one who has leadership ability. Carter is eleven, and he is the athlete of the bunch. Buzz is also eleven, but just a little younger than Carter. He is the also the technology geek. Jane is the youngest; she is nine and is also the little thinker, and the positive one. These kids had to try to work to survive and be rescued. The signal fire was something that they worked on in case a plane or boat came near the island. When a plane came near, they raced to Look Out Point. Carter made it across, but the log broke when Jane and Buzz were almost across. Jane jumped and made it, but Buzz was not as fortunate. He landed six feet below the edge. Carter had to make a choice to save his step-brother or light the signal fire. "The plane was leaving." is a quote from the story. Did Carter light the signal fire or save his step-brother?
Survival books are one of my favorite books to read. The author of this book is also the host of the Survivor TV show. So even though it is fiction, I knew it would be realistic.
    Five Stars
My Grandson and I had a wonderful time reading this series. Just enough suspense for an 8 yr old.
    Awesome book!
I read the first book as part of our school wide reading incentive. Once I started, I couldn't put it down! I immediately started reading book 2, Stranded, Trial by Fire.

Judy Blume does a fine job of seeing all this from a boy's viewpoint." (Saturday Review)

    The perfect teen-angst drama
Outstanding. Narration ten out of ten. Always a classic favorite, Judy Blume impresses me yet again.
Read this book when I was a kid....
Great book...brought back many memories from my childhood.
I'm wondering if the writers for the HBO show "Sopranos" copied/borrowed the characters for the series. Many similarities.
The boy's side of the story
My daughter and I have been doing lots of driving lately so we decided to give a talking book a try. I was looking for "Are you there God, it's me Margaret?" which I read when I was about her age but the only Judy Blume title I could find was "Then Again, Maybe I Won't". I guess it's the male companion to "Are you ..." and I kind of feel I read it at some stage in my early adolescence.
I enjoyed the story and in the most part the story telling. I found some of the other voices jarring - especially the female characters. I absolutely hated the music over the opening paragraphs- it made it very hard to catch the story (though maybe I was just having a bad day!)
All in all our attention was held - my daughter was shocked by references to wet dreams and spying on girls. Blume writes so well for kids about kids and even with the references to Vietnam War the story still translates well for kids in 2017.

    Nice Book, Good Story
Judy Blume is one of my 10 year old son's favorite authors. We listened to this together on a long trip. It was a good story, nice reader. The author attempts to tackle prejudice and I think she did a decent job putting this into a book for kids. Side note, I was very happy that my 10 yr old did not know what Negro meant, and we are black...that shows progress in America. I certainly knew what it meant and had heard it far too much when I was 10 yrs old.
