    Publisher's Summary:
Bored with the everyday chores and sheep herding, he can't help himself from playing practical jokes on everyone, from Eyjolf the old servant, to his brother and sister. But when he plays a trick on Ragnor of the House of Hakonsson, he goes too far, setting in motion a chain of events that will forever alter his destiny.
Because of it, Halli will have to leave home and go on a hero's quest. Along the way, he will encounter highway robbers, terrifying monsters, and a girl who may finally be his match. In the end, he will discover the truth about the legends, his family, and himself. Jonathan Stroud's new work is a hero's saga and coming-of-age, as well as a surprising look at what bravery really means.

She had a voice that loosened earwax.
He secreted himself, Your apology is threadbare and She had a voice that loosened earwax are just a small example of the creative language used in this story. I found myself listening just to hear how things where described. JS is a master of the English language.
The book starts out with this line, Listen Then, and I'll tell you again of the Battle of the Rock. The book is filled with several of these stories and the main story is a story being told to children. The book started with the promise of being about Heroes fighting what I thought they said was Trolls. The hard copy spells it Trows. It ended up being mostly a story about a coming of age Prince? who wants to be a hero, only he is very short and squat. He is not exactly hero looking or princely looking. With out giving the story away, let me say this does not stop him or slow him down.
I liked the character development, the main story, the humor and the vocabulary. In the middle it did get a little boring and there was not as much exploring out of the valley as I would have liked, but I found I did enjoy the book has a whole very much. Not quite enough to give it a fifth star, but enough to want to read more Jonathan Stroud. There is also a strong female character in the book, sometimes stronger then the hero.
This is supposed to be a young adult, but that is only because it does not have sex in it. I believe because of how well it is written that adults will like it more then kids.
    Narrator does an excellent job.
To Emulate or Escape from (Swinish) Heroes--
This is an entertaining, fresh take on the pseudo-Icelandic saga fantasy genre, filled with believable and very human characters (even the "villains"), unexpected plot developments, suspenseful and yet funny scenes, and a well-realized world. Author Stroud deftly adapts that genre to the young adult market, depicting an appealing young underdog protagonist struggling to find his place in his world: short, stubby, swarthy, homely, brave, clever, resourceful, and witty Halli. The relationship between Halli and his girl friend Aud is wonderful, for they are well-matched and feisty with and loyal to each other. Aud is a great female character: independent-minded and at least as intelligent, spunky, and humorous as Halli. The interplay between the scary, comical, and imaginative heroic legends that begin each chapter and the real world heroism that Halli must learn and attempt is fascinating. I listened to the book with a delicious sense of not knowing what would happen next but being sure that whatever did happen would be interesting and just right.

    Great book
This book is great. I have enjoyed the entire meg cabot princess diaries books and this was one of the bests. I enjoyed how the performer read it as if each character was her friend and her voice really works for the characters. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes meg Cabot or the princess diaries series. Also to anyone who likes princesses or drama. I'd give this a perfect review because it's a perfect book and also I love how the characters are ones that I find myself talking back to often which I find very amusing. Have a good time reading!!

    Excellent!
We are doing "Ambleside Online" for our curriculum this year and we love audio books to do this because my daughters reading isn't the best. BUT - we downloaded this after strugglng with the actual book and my daughter is in heaven. It's divided into chapters making it really easy for me to assign a chapter for her to listen to. She understands and enjoys listening to it.

    Publisher's Summary:
"You jam on the brakes and stop the ute right at your front door. You jump out. Not for the first time you run into a house that could be full of guns, with death waiting for you. You don't even think of that until you're crossing the threshold ... You already know what you're going to find. Underneath the fear and horror and panic there's a cold realization that Gavin's body will be somewhere in the house. You can picture what those bullets will have done to his little body."
It is a time of profound change for Ellie Linton. Enemies are everywhere. Some come crawling over the hills others drive in and knock on the front door. Sometimes her friends are there and sometimes they are not. Ellie fights every inch of the way. But when courage and imagination are not enough, when she is trapped and helpless, Ellie must face the end of life as she knows it ... standing alone, sustained only by her own strength.
    Editorial Reviews:
The Ellie Chronicles takes up the story of Ellie Linton where John Marsden's popular young adult series The Tomorrow Series left off. Ellie and her band of young friends struggled to survive the war between Australia and an unnamed invading force. The war has ended but not without cost and dangerous enemies still abound. This is the final entry in the postwar trilogy where Ellie must depend on her instincts and force of will to carry her through the day. Mikaela Martin powerfully performs the voice of the brave young woman who is the protagonist and narrator of this gripping series.
    Critic Reviews:
"Marsden is a master storyteller. He is capable of writing with both versatility and considerable emotional range. Ellie Linton is feisty, fair and honest" (The Age)

A great end to this series
A great end to the Tomorrow Series and the Ellie Chronicles! Another great author with another great set of reads! Keep them coming John Marsden!
    Superb
Where does Circle of Flight rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
The final instalment of the series that started with Tomorrow When the War Began. Beautifully written with a stronger psychological component than earlier books in the Tomorrow series. Strong characters, great plot, and an excellent description of Australian rural life and culture. This series will appeal to a wider audience than the target teen / young adult age range.
    Great
Smashing series - great books to finish the whole story - Ellie rules
Read and enjoy a good book and story

    Gripping Listen, a good end.
This is one of the better books of the Elle Chronicles and also the last. We have enjoyed the follow ups but found them not as good as the tomorrow series. It has been nice to see what has been happening since but also you wonder can there be too much of a good thing? Its something we've questioned throughout these books.
One major thing to note is the new narrator to the last two books. By the third book you do get used to her which helps a lot. Just to add again, she isn't a bad narrator its just you get used to the one you've had for 8 books (tomorrow series and first of Elle chronicles).
Good story and much enjoyed. Still not as good as tomorrow series though.

    Well-intentioned but irritating
We listened to this book as a family last year when one of my children (who has dyslexia) was assigned this book over the winter vacation and found it too annoying and boring to read. (This was the only schoolbook he was ever allowed to listen to as an audiobook).
Chances are, if you are thinking of listening to this book, it is because it is assigned for a class. However, the narrator, who has a lovely voice and does a wonderful job, reads very slowly. So unless you have a reading disability as my son did, chances are you would finish reading the book hours before she does.
I am writing this review primarily for the parents who might be tempted to purchase it for a car ride or some family listening. My advice is don't do it. The story of Delia and how she covers up the fact that she can't read is compelling. However, the book is written in simple sentences which are easy for grade school children to read. After ten minutes of listening it becomes grating. All of my kids hated listening to it and started to mimc it.
The dialogue between the kids in the book is just a fantastical concoction of how adults wished children would talk to each other. Also, the resolution of some plot lines seemed far-fetched as well. The transformation of the Tolliver twins was particularly uninspired.
As trite as this sounds, Double Dutch does touch on important social issues. Reading this book might very well prompt a child who has difficulty reading, or one who spends a great deal of time alone, to ask for help. Most of the adults portrayed in this inner city community are caring and supportive, so help is just an ask away.
But I still found it a highly annoying listen. So my advice to any parent whose child needs or wants to listen to this book is to put it on their ipod or mp3 player and give them headphones.

    Love
    A bit disappointing
Having read Blood Red Horse prior to recommending it to my grandson, and finding it one of the best young person's novels to come along in recent years, I was eager to read the rest of the trilogy. Green Jasper is still better than most of the books aimed at young readers, but doesn't measure up to Blood Red Horse. It's action-packed, all right, but lacks the depth of the first book in the trilogy. I appreciate the nuance of Grant's treatment of what England endured as Henry II's sons fought over the crown and neglected or exploited the people. But Will, Gavin and Kamil seem mere sketches of the full-bodied characters we met in the first book. Two elements of the story are not believable: that Prince John has contact with the Old Man of the Mountain and his assassins somewhere in the wilds of the Middle East, and that Hosanna survives so many near-death experiences; he is a horse, after all, not a cat with nine lives.
I will certainly finish the trilogy, hoping the third book matches the first in quality, and I will pass Green Jasper on to my grandson, who has been anxiously waiting for it since he finished Blood Red Horse two days ago. But I'll bet his reaction will be similar to mine -- he may be ten years old, but he's a savvy reader.

A new adventure for Charlie Bone
Charlie Bone and the Shadow is the seventh book in the Children of the Red King series. Count Harken is back to try to get revenge on the heirs of the Red King. His plot this time is to go back in time to get to Charlie before Charlie was ever born. It is up to Charlie to save his ancestor and save himself. Dad Bone and Mom Bone are not in this one as they go off on a second honeymoon, so no father son team up to squash the bad guy. Sorely missing are Emma and Olivia, the only real female characters. Emma has one scene and Olivia is not even in the story. For a series with better characters, strong female leads and more adventure, try Kingdoms and the Elves of the Reaches.
    Charlie Bone and the Shadow
What made the experience of listening to Charlie Bone and the Shadow the most enjoyable?
I enjoyed the narrator's ability to change his voice to suit each character.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Charlie Bone and the Shadow?
One of the most memorable moments was discovering that the Academy actually belonged to Billy.
What does Simon Jones bring to the story that you wouldnt experience if you just read the book?
Tone of voice. The audio versions make each book that much richer.

    Page turner all the way!
This is a review from my 13 year old son.
This book has been one of the best books I've read so far.
I have been reading this series and this book is one of my favorites. It keeps you on your toes though out most of the book, and when it's not, you can tell its right around the corner. Sometimes the plot twists are a bit too predictable. The story progresses quite nicely; in the beginning it gives you little bits and pieces of the story, exploring the third person limited views of three different characters. Obviously, the main character is a young James Bond who has a very adventurous spirit and a weak spot for danger, so he's always getting into sticky situations. These situations are always able to be solved by James and some of his friends, like his friend Pritpal who gets dragged into this adventure and has to assist James in this suspenseful journey. Like when they have to venture into a grave yard at night to look for clues left by the professor, who has been kidnapped, leading them to his location. James and Pritpal get separated and he ends up in a place where he has become an urban legend. All the people in the town were willing to help him, because they had heard about the heroic feats that he had accomplished. Like when he took down a dictator that was being a stereo-typical dictator and pretending to do good for the people but is really taking all the wealth for himself and his close friends. James was able to make the entire empire collapse by sabotaging one of the dictators plans for complete control, not to mention the dam that he caused to fall on the dictators house. Overall I thought this was a great book for intermediate readers looking for a, "keep you on your toes," kind of novel. I can't recall any serious spelling or grammatical errors, so very well written and revised. I definitely recommend this book to almost everybody.
    Young Bond gets smart
Charlie Higson's Double or Die is the pivot on which the Young Bond series turns. Double or Die both pulls from past books and points to the future. Where SilverFin infused Bond with his fearless instinct and Blood Fever developed his brawn, Double or Die works his mind (and ours).
Thematically, Double or Die is an adventure of the mind. Bond and his band of friends must decrypt puzzles and clues contained within a mysterious cipher sent by a kidnapped professor. Higson plays the motif throughout as references to skulls and the brain abound. Where Blood Fever was bright and expansive, Double or Die is dark and contained. While this may make it a lesser Bondian adventure for some, the smaller scale allows Higson to work in greater texture and detail, making Double or Die the most vivid and visual of all the Young Bond novels to date.

    A good escape
I'm an adult and enjoyed this "teen" book. Cabot explores one of the most common desires of all teenage girls--to become instantly rich, beautiful and popular--yet without the "work!" It was a great read but I thought the ending was weak. It seemed the author ran out of ideas and just ended it. Apart from that, I would recommend it for teens and anyone wanting a good, clean, fun read.
One of her best - a great read
This book is great - I hope this turns into a series. I love the dilema facing Em/Nicky and the wonders & joys of discovering her new "persona" and trying to stay in close contact with her family. This "theme" has a lot of room for more exploration.
Another creative paranormal story by Meg Cabot
What did you like about this audiobook?
I really enjoyed hearing this book. I finished it very fast as I wanted to know how the story would go on. I started to hear the second book as soon as I finished this one. It was a very creative story involving a brain transplant of the smart girl Em into a rather spoiled and not very smart top model Nikki after an accident at the opening of a megastore. Em needs to adjust and has to keep it secret while missing her former secret love Christopher, being pursued by ex-boyfriends of Nikki, paparazzi's and finding out that she is being secretly spied on. The book was very clearly narrated and was easy to follow.
How has the book increased your interest in the subject matter?
The creative idea of a brain being transplanted into another (in this case gorgeous) body and its consequences
Does the author present information in a way that is interesting and insightful, and if so, how does he achieve this?
The idea of transplanting a brain is very creative. Meg Cabot kept the story going adding more and more facts to the story turning the story very entertaining
What did you find wrong about the narrator's performance?
    Changing bodies
    good read
the idea of the story is good but the narrator is older than a teenage girl .. and the dialoug is very prolonged ..
    Great Read (Listen)
Meg Cabot has done it again! A great story for any age. Love the characters, the plot, and the narrator.
