    Publisher's Summary:
All 16-year-old Cameron wants is to get through high school - and life in general - with a minimum of effort. It's not a lot to ask. But that's before he's given some bad news: he's sick and he's going to die. Which totally sucks. Hope arrives in the winged form of Dulcie, a loopy punk angel/possible hallucination with a bad sugar habit. She tells Cam there is a cure - if he's willing to go in search of it. With the help of a death-obsessed, video-gaming dwarf and a yard gnome, Cam sets off on the mother of all road trips through a twisted America into the heart of what matters most.

A decent idea, too many curse words
Bray has a great idea, but the book is plagued by curse words. Apparently she thinks that all teens must talk that way. She is also stuck in the 80s. This is supposed to be a contemporary book, yet there are references to Star Wars and video arcades (which hardly exist any more). She seems hung up on MTV, with a thinly veiled Carson Daley as a chief annoyance.
The idea, however, of a kid launching on a Quixotic quest while having Mad Cow Disease is great. I also loved having the god Balder stuck in a yard gnome. However, with this set up, the bad guy is obviously swiped from Star Wars (read Luke vs Vader in Degobah) and the ending is a serious let down.
    Pretty dang good
A little difficult to follow at times, but overall really awesome. The writing style reminds me of John Green but a little more blunt, if that makes any sense.
    Alright
Libba Bray is one of my favorite authors. This book however wasn't up to my standards. It's an interesting read with an okay narrator. I probably won't relisten/reread it. I am glad I did at least once though since I enjoy the author.
    Funny
Great book, has you wishing for the impossible. Read well although the 'girl' voices are a little annoying.
    Pretty good
The story was very well written. However there was a few parts that weren't really cleared up and then ending was a little confusing as to what happened to Cameron. Over all I think it was a pretty good book.

After Tupac is shot the first time, the girls are awed by how he comes back stronger than ever. And seeing how Tupac keeps on keeping on helps when Neeka's brother is wrongly sent to jail and D's absent mom keeps disappointing. But by the time Tupac is shot again, the girls have turned 13 and everything's changed, except their belief in finding their Big Purpose.
Newbery Honor winner Jacqueline Woodson's compelling and inspiring story shows up how music touches our lives, how much life can be lived in a short time, and how all-too-brief connections can touch us to the core and remain a part of us forever.
    Critic Reviews:
"Beautifully capturing the girls' passage from childhood to adolescence, this is a memorable, affecting novel about the sustaining power of love and friendship and each girl's developing faith in her own 'Big Purpose.'" (Booklist)
"Voice actor Susan Spain eloquently captures the story's unnamed narrator.... With meticulous timing and culturally perceptive attention to the rich dialogue, Spain draws out these stories of girls on the edge of adolescence." (AudioFile)

    Totally enchanting!
I had a hard time following the story in the begining. However, it started to make sence and then I could not stop...I love the ending...I enjoyed the way the author captures the scenery and I could actually picture the characters and feel familiar with the locations, with out having to have lived in Europe. I enjoyed it.

    Okay
A big fan of Lisi Harrison, but these were slimmer than the others in the series, and not quite as focused and funny.

    Great high-low reader
    Pulp Education, Bk. 2
Saddleback Educational Publishing has come up with a brilliant concept for solving a very serious problem: the great decline in reading among today's students. Their solution? Make assigned reading materials exciting! Their Pageturners books are short novels, designed to entice even the least motivated students into reading.
This confronts both of the major problems with more traditional readers: if they are not mind-numbingly dull, they are excruciatingly didactic, cramming some important "teachings" whether moral, religious, or (these days) politically correct down the throats of children so hard as to turn them off of reading for good.
Nikki Peters, currently an executive secretary at a bank, had applied for the job as executive secretary to the founder of the Royal Mattress Company for three reasons: the pay was outstanding, the job was described as "unique and challenging", and she wanted out of her current situation. But Hal Dempsey was REALLY hiring an amateur detective, somebody to worm her way into the life of his wastrel youngest son and provide Hal with the information on which to decide whether to finally give up and disinherit him. Thus begins an interesting variation on the detective story with lots of twists and turns before the end.
Plus, for what they are intended to be, reading textbooks, they are wonderful. The fact that students who learn to read better and to love reading from these books may soon find them skimpy fare for pleasure reading is not entirely bad, assuming their teachers quickly move them on to bigger and better things in the school library or the bookstore if necessary.
Other detective fiction Pageturners:The Case of the Cursed Chalet (Pageturners),The Case of the Dead Duck (Pageturners),The Case of the Wanted Man (Pageturners), andThe Case of the Watery Grave (Pageturners).
    Pulp Education, Bk. 3

The former fat girl, now gorgeous actress, from Rollie Torres' high school days walks in the door of the detective agency he now works for, begging for protection from a mysterious stalker, and the "surprise twist ending" will be obvious to most readers from the very first chapter.

Somewhere in a place so far up that there is no down, a ship is waiting to take the nomes home, back to wherever they came from. And one nome, Masklin, knows that they've got to try and contact the ship.
It means going to Florida (wherever that is), then getting to the launch of a communications satellite (whatever that is). A ridiculous plan. Impossible. But Masklin doesn't know this, so he tries to do it anyway. And the first step is to try and hitch a ride on a new kind of truck, a truck with wings.
This is the third book in the Bromeliad Trilogy.
Please note: This is a vintage recording. The audio quality may not be up to modern day standards.
    Critic Reviews:
"The conversational style and fast-moving plot make this cheerful, unpretentious tale useful where there is a need for accessible science fiction, or where the previous volumes have been enjoyed." (School Library Journal)
    Members Reviews:
    Ok, but not brilliant
While I loved the setting for this installment, I am still disconcerted by Stephen Briggs' performance. Again, no variation of his performance from his Discworld performances, so you will hear Granny Weatherwax or Nanny Ogg from the lips of other characters.
    Fantastic book, well read
The narrator has just the right style for the nomes, really bringing the story to life in an entertaining and engaging way. I only wish the story was longer!
    Great book
Great book, enjoyable story, good narrator. Nicely rounded off the series. Would read it again.

    Publisher's Summary:
It's a glamorous life, but 16-year-old Kaitlin Burke, costar of one of the hottest shows on TV, is exhausted from the pressures of fame. Then she hits on an outrageously daring solution, one that has to remain top secret or it will jeopardize everything she's ever worked for.
    Editorial Reviews:
The first in former Teen People entertainment editor Jen Calonitas kicky Secrets of My Hollywood Life series, this conspiratorial, insiders guide shakes the lid off squeaky-clean celebrity teen Kaitlin Burkes fame entourage, financially needy stage parents, tabloids, and all. The buoyant Roxanne Hernandez narrates, smartly collapsing the temptation to dismiss Kaitlin as just another cynical, mouthy showbiz brat. Hernandez keeps the tone bouncy, but connects the intelligent dialogue, planting nervous pauses and trembling standoffs to drive home that Kaitlin and her BFF Liz are diligent, honorable young adults.
Secrets of My Hollywood Life introduces 16-year-old Kaitlin Burke, star of the nighttime soap Family Affair. Overworked, sleep-deprived Kaitlin plots to peel away from 18-hour shoots and tedious press junkets. When Liz, a non-celeb, grumbles about homework, wistful Kaitlin conspires to enroll incognito at Clark Hall, Lizs ordinary high school, for a taste of normalcy. Plans unfold: Kaitlins hair and makeup squad disguise her as drab, British transfer Rachel Rogers, while her agent negotiates approval from the principals office. Soon Kaitlin is navigating French, cafeteria lunches, and the hunky Austin Meyers. But despite her anonymity, Kaitlin still bumps up against backstabbing and drama. She learns high school and Hollywood both require resilience and courage not to blend in. She also becomes popular despite her mousy makeunder.
Voicing Kaitlin is tricky since its hard to feel intuitive sympathy for a gorgeous, kind, rich teen. Hernandez gets it, and animates her Kaitlin with cheery cadences shadowed by weariness, reminding us shes no ingénue. Earthy, artsy Liz disarms with a warm, kooky chuckle, but still snaps off Kaitlins conniving nemesis, Sky, with an acidity thats winning. If youve ever hyperventilated over photos of starlets fetching coffee in yoga pants, Secrets of My Hollywood Life provides reassurance that complications surely exist beyond latte runs.

Except for the voice, it's (surprisingly) ok!
When I bought this book, I was looking for something light and mindless. For that purpose, this is a perfect story. And I found it more entertaining than I expected. If you are a fan of Gossip Girl or similar shows, this book is for you. (Gossip Girl and Secrets of My Hollywood Life are published by the same house, actually.)
But one thing I didn't quite like about this audiobook is the voice. It's too nasal for me.. Given that everyone's tolerance level is different, I recommend that you try this.
    good story ruined by narrator
Story was good and so really tried to get past the patronizing sounding narrator but once the awful English accent started I couldn't continue and finished reading it as an e-book.

    Narrator perfects the story.
Sharon Creech is such a great writer and you probably have already read and loved this story as I had when I got the audible version. The voice of Zinnie is perfect! You won't be disappointed.
If you have never read this book, difinitely get this. It is such a sweet sweet story.
    La de da!
    True love!
I love this book! The author paints such beautiful scenery and emotion throughout the pages, and this narrator brings it all happily into the world.
A coming of age story with so much to give each reader. Every life problem can be viewed from a different perspective and this book offers great connection between the problem and those who help solve it.

    Members Reviews:
    Too Slow!
Would you try another book from Walter Dean Myers and/or Peter Francis James?
Walter Dean Myers is a wonderful writer. His use of dialogue to propel the story forward is great. Peter Francis James, however, is not compelling, nor does he capture the listener's attention. He reads the book so slowly that you're just waiting for the next line.
What other book might you compare Scorpions to and why?
Scorpions is similar in genre to The Outsiders, by S.E. Hinton in that it's about a boy who finds himself in a situation for which he is not prepared.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
Again, the pacing was slow and the intonation was monotonous. I was using the recording with my 8th grade English class and we ended up reading it as a play to liven it up. We only listened to about half of the book.
If this book were a movie would you go see it?
Maybe; the story is a bit dated.
Excellent Story - Narration very slow.
What made the experience of listening to Scorpions the most enjoyable?
Great storyline especially if you are from New York City.
What did you like best about this story?
It gave a good view of what the characters were like and what the main character was going through without being too "over the top" with the graphics and language. There was just enough action to keep young people interested in the story.
Which character as performed by Peter Francis James was your favorite?
The Narrator performed all of the characters well. I just wish he could have increased his pace when reading. It seemed very slow and dragged out.
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
Yes. I didn't expect anyone to actually die in the story!
Great Story but the Audio does match the book.
What did you love best about Scorpions?
It's a great coming of age story
Did the narration match the pace of the story?
The narration in chapter 15 and 16 doesn't match the book version. It skips from chapter 15 to 16 and then back to 15.

Worth listening to again and again.
This is a story of two friends, who had been friends up until middle-school. Kate Faber and Marilyn MacKintosh have cracks in their friendship. Ever since Marilyn became a cheer-leader, Kate rarely got to see her. Through a life guitars and big shoes, Kate can always depend on Marilyn to be her best friend. This is a story of friendship, drama, and a little bit of romance. I, for one, loved this book. I listen to it every night. I must have listened to the whole story 10 times.
