Great Book

Really interesting book. The audio production of this book was really different with the music at the end of ever chapter. At first I thought it was kinda annoying but it grows on you. Also Shecter uses the different spelling for the names some of the the main characters. So check out the reference guide before you start the book. Overall, a good listen.

good historical fiction

I have read several similar books but i really enjoyed this one. it was compelling and the performance was well done.

Wonderful submersion into antiquity.

Shelter deftly describes a world so vivid you'll feel as if you're there. The characters are dimensional and believable. This historical fiction should be on every teacher of Roman and Greek history's reading list.

Fun, but the ending...

*****MINOR SPOILER ALERT*****

Another fun installment in this entertaining tween series, but it fell prey to my biggest series pet peeve: the cliff hanger ending.

I feel that every novel in a series should have its own arc, that the plot mysteries that keep you turning pages throughout should, at least in great part, be paid off/answered by the end of the book, yet the larger themes be unresolved or compelling enough to warrant another book.

This book simply ended at the climax, possibly to increase the reader's interest in anticipating and purchasing the next book in the series, which is uber lame.

It was very involved in the love triangle componant to the story, which was okay, but the actual plot moved very little until the end when the book ended abruptly.

If you're into the series, read and enjoy, it's fun, light reading, but be prepared to wait for the next book to find out what's really going on in this one!

I love Avalon

I really like this world created by Aprilynne Pike. And I keep thinking about it after I finish the books. My whole family enjoy this series - my daughters, granddaughters and I. Laurel's year of high school with friends, family and fellow fairies passes by too quickly and there is much more going on than just SAT tests.. I'm glad that Tam is a major part of the story. Laurel has to make some decisions and some are made for her. And the reason I only gave the book four stars is because I hate major cliff hangers...

Darkly gorgeous

This is a collection of three short stories, each different from the other, with the common prompt of "a kiss." The first is based on an old poem called "The Goblin Market" and while the story works on its own, to me, reading the poem gives you another level of appreciation for the piece.

The second story is, in my opinion, the most spectacular. It takes place in India, about a girl who is cursed--anyone who hears her voice will die instantly--but as she falls in love, she desperately wants to speak. The narration adds something exotic and magical to it I just don't think you could get reading it in written form.

Some readers have griped that there is no connection between the stories. There isn't meant to be, as is the usual with short story collections. In fact, I think the author's talent shines by writing three very different stories centered around a single prompt.

These are stories for people who like a sense of dark, fairytale wonder to their stories. They are filled with imagination and the language is rich. I normally don't like stories just for the prose, and actually tend to roll my eyes at authors who get carried away with trying to be artful with their prose, but damn. DAMN. If you have an appreciation for a bit of darkness, a bit of wonder, and words so rich you can almost taste them, you may, like me, find yourself listening to these stories over and over just for the feel of them.

What I found to be most satisfying about this series of stories is that they are completely different from daughter of smoke and bone series (which happens to be one of my fave series) Laini Taylor has the knack to switch her writing style from story to story so differently it's almost reading a short compilation of stories by a few different authors.

Maybe not for me age

I think I may be a bit to old for the target group of this story. Or just never were your typica teenage, so I couldn't realy relate to anyone in the story. Still the fantasy-part of this urban-fantasy world had some interesting concepts... though I would probably be more amazed (but off course also freaked out) at getting a tail all of a sudden, not grossed out. Overall I was obiously entertained and curious for the ending, but alot of the (steriotype?) caracters and teen-like acting (and voice acting) felt like a struggle the get trough... again, probably not ment for my age group ;)

Publisher summed it up

This book is pretty short, in fact the publisher's description is almost all that happens in it - right up to the end. I suspect that the second book could be the first one you listen to and not be confused. It is written and narrated for a young audience (a magic tree house age group). I recommend listening to the audio sample to see if the overly soft tones of the narrator don't bore you. I gave it 3*s since I did become curious to see what would happen next but it's probably not worth a credit to mature listeners.

Awesome edge of your seat book!

This book was action-packed from the start. Every chapter had a cliffhanger and made me want to lostr more and more. The storyline was great and I'm definitely going to continue listening to the rest of the series!

Good Story Arc, Painful Writing, Terrible Narrator

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

This is obviously a young adult book and apparently written for children who don't know how real people speak, react and act. Oh yeah, you also have fo be deaf.

Would you be willing to try another book from Robert Liparulo? Why or why not?

Maybe an adult book with a different narrarator or in written form would be better. I doubt that I will risk it.

How did the narrator detract from the book?

I felt like the narrorator was reading to a kindergarden class or group of ESL students. The reading was painfully slow and every word overannunciated.
