They Closed the Schools!

The author has taken an emotional and historic situation and carefully created the perfect story to reveal the truth about life in Prince Edward County, Virginia. This book is a great southern novel, worthy of critical acclaim. Read it and grasp the atmosphere during the transition from segregation to integration in public schools. Through the eyes of a fifth grade boy named Ben, an entire era of southern history is presented.

In 1961 I entered Longwood College, Prince Edward County, Farmville, Virginia, where white females studied to become teachers. It was definitely strange that there were no public schools available in Prince Edward County for student teaching assignments. The reality of the situation has been faithfully presented by Dennis McFarland.

The author did a fine job of researching his story

This book is extremely well-written. I am a retired teacher of US History, and it thoroughly engaged my attention. It described events and emotions in the Southside area of VA, where resistance to school integration was very strong. The author did a fine job of researching his story. My main complaint is that the narrator is only ten years old at the start of the book, and he displays thoughts and insights that would seem to be beyond the understanding of most ten year old kids.

But I might enjoy his writing with a different story line

I really enjoyed this book. It showed the time in all its ugliness and compassion as well. Interesting that the boy sensed that something wasn't right w/ the situation. I love history. We (a young USAF family from New England) were stationed in the deep south at that time. I was too busy raising kids to think about it at the time, but now as I think back...

2nd fiction book better than her first

This, like her first fictional book, is for fans of her earlier work. I'm not sure how into this I would be if this was the first Jen L book I downloaded, but now that I see the fictional world she's starting to develop - with Diva - a character I'm really starting to have a fondness for - I think the potential for her fiction is growing. This book has a more creative premise this time around. Also, there are a bunch of Jen L in-jokes that will be lost on you if you haven't read her memoirs.

The quality of her voice seems better on this; in "Here we Go Again", it's as if her voice has lowered an octave.

This is definitely light reading or listening, something for the beach, and definitely chick lit.

Almost did not listen, but glad I did

The cover really made me not want to listen to this book. I am a huge Jen Lancaster fan and even enjoyed her fiction. This book was about so much more and in the end I really enjoyed it. Is it the same Jen I have grown to love and feel like we grew up together? No but I still enjoyed it. I always appreciate her performance as well, she brings life to the characters.

The story is not worth enduring the horrible narration

This was some of the worst narration I've heard in a while. If you are considering this book, I'd urge you to listen to the sample audio and decide if you can tolerate hearing several hours of the character "Diva".

I would say that this author should stick to writing books, not narrating them, but that might imply that this story is decently written. I won't complain that it's implausible, because I think that's the point, but it is just incredibly stupid. Having listened to (and enjoyed) one of the author's previous works of fiction, I was not expecting any sort of depth or mystery, but rather a light, fun read (listen) to occupy road trip time, but this was just mind numbingly idiotic.

Not the best from Jen

This book wasnt for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

I'm not sure who would like this book. I love Jen Lancaster's books but maybe she should stick to memoirs and not fiction. The lead was so bitter and judgmental. I couldn't wait until it was over.

Excellent Time Travel / Romance

The mine is an excellent story, well worth the money. The author was new to me, and I'm very happy that I took the chance - I loved the book and look forward to the sequels being released on audible!

Curse you Mr Heldt

Curse you Mr Heldt, what have you done to me? You have taken me from my usual genre of zombies and or historical wartime leaders/events/characters and sometimes with the two combined

You have got me interested in what is essentially a love story a love story with a twist! This is something I was not expecting. I was expecting alternative history time travel full of action with world war 2 playing a wham bam zap and pow type affair. What I got was a great tale of love across time zones.

I often found myself thinking about what would I have done? Although Joel the main character has nothing in common with me, he is handsome, Im.. well ugly. Joels a ladies man, Im well a desperate fat man! He is young, Im old. He is rich, I am not. But I wanted it all to work out in the end for him.

I wont give any of the story away, because I think this is the type of book that is best to go into with no idea of what is going to happen. However, I will comment on the narration. The narration does manage to suit the characters very well. The only negative with the narration was that it was a little slow and did require a bit of a speed up. This did in turn lessen the listening hours. On the bright side you can listen to this one in a single day.

I hope this is not an indication of my taste changing because I am quite happy with my normal listening choices. But Mr Heldt has caused me to think again!

Highly Recommended

At first I had mixed feelings about the ending; however, once I thought about it I couldn't help but think that it was actually a very appropriate ending. It can't always be, "And they lived happily ever after." This story really kept me at the edge of my seat. There are lots of different groups of bad guys in this one. Two of these groups are trying to kill Psycho Mobster Frank Harrison. One of the groups, comprised of murderous transient types, that go after rich people and set their sights on Frank Harrison. The other group, are a group of mobsters back from the dead who Frank murdered several years back. Frank, thinking its the other mobster gangs that are after him, hires hit man David Mitchell to eliminate all the leaders of all the other gangs. Little does Frank realize that the real threat are the other two groups. I highly recommend this novel.

Brilliant as always

As usual Shuan depicts his masterpieces with such skill, excitement, imagery in words that transcends other authors. There are many twists and has the usual racy sections. Certainly worth to buy

Often I find that a narrator does not capture my sense of a book. This narrator is is EXCEPTIONAL. Wonderful! Worth your money.

I loved the story.

I was intrigued and not disappointed. a very wonderful story throughout. I was not able to anticipate the next events. the ending, though sad, was fitting for the story. I highly recommend this for all ages.

I really liked both Barnaby and Emily. They were very well suited for each other. Other characters were very lovable too and I would love to see Simon and Lamb get their own stories. Shirlee Busbee does an excellent job keeping you interested as well as intrigued. As all of her books are, this is an exceptionally good read!

Thus far I have read several of her books especially the "Becomes Her" books. This one was one of her better written one's. The smugglers was an ideal solution to the plot. Really enjoyed it.

book wrong size

This book was oversized, so I wasn't really happy with it. It won't fit in with the rest of her books I already have on the shelf. Good story and writer though. Next time, before I order a book, I will make sure what size it is before I buy it.

Livin' la vida Latina

Review: Patricia Engelâs debut book was wonderful. Her main character, Sabina, was smart, witty, and real; she often referred to herself as a âlate bloomer.â

These are stories of a girlâs coming-of-age from childhood to adulthood (although not necessarily in that order) that trek through the hurdles revolving her family, friends, neighbors, and her ethnic identity.

Living in a community shunned by âblancosâ makes life a little lonely for Sabina in âLucho.â In âRefuge,â Sabina must hide from the wreckage of the 9/11 aftermath while pondering the fact that she âcheated,â that she shouldâve been in that building with all those victims if she had only gone to work that day. And, in âVida,â Sabina befriends a prostitute that she canât help but be fascinated by.

Full of vivid and lively descriptions like âyour skin looks like diarrhea.â (47) I couldnât help but laugh at that one. âDeath is a huge aphrodisiac.â (35) Interesting how you always want people when theyâre dead âthey are the âungettableâ get.

Engel has a way of engaging the reader with her candid humor and elegant prose. Her unique writing style of broken sentences was so oddly poetic âyet it all seemed to work.

A satisfying treat

For me, reading Vida was a wonderful experience, such a treat. The stories are beautifully written, obviously written by a gifted and sensitive author. The stories flow effortlessly, like beautiful music moving the reader along a wonderful journey. Ms. Engel uses the English language like a gifted musician uses his instrument.

I read the book in one weekend. The book kept pulling me back to it, it kept me yearning for more and more. Each story is a little treasure, a little slice of life, an opportunity to experience life through someone else's eyes. It was thought provoking.

It had been a long time since I had read fiction. I had forgotten how satisfying good fiction can be. The book opened up a whole new world of reading for me.

Beautiful

A breezy delight of a novel!

If you like Sordid Lives or Greater Tuna or Hurricane Bianca and you want an easy read, with quirky Texas small town characters, this novel is just what you're looking for. Miss Jessie/Timothy John is a study in 'appearances deceiving.' The reader gets to know her/him from the inside out, as it were. Realize that this is not about an individual with gender dysphoria or transvestism. Timothy John is a gay man who wants to pay back the town who mocked him as a child and then can't quite figure out a way to shed his own creation.

Couldn't stop till I'd read it all.

I admit most of the book I did not think was funny. One part was. The rest was a poignant story of finding your identity and admitting it. I stayed up for hours to finish it. Perhaps it was just my mood but it was bittersweet. The ending was right. God bless us all, everyone!

Was readable but the pages were all loose. Think the glue dried out.

Nice Idea

Nice idea poor execution. The sample seemed interesting but as soon I started reading the full story it was impossible to tell who was speaking and who they were speaking with. I choose not to invest any more of my time.

Timeless

This book is timeless. The author captures small town characters and drama is delightful detail with incredible humor. The issues of the primary character are even more relevant in today's out times than when the book was written in 1978. The inner war of Miss Jessie Gatewood and the secret self she carries within is so well articulated. Splendora is a great read!
