Recht unterhaltsames, avantgardistisches Buch. Plot ist ziemlich einfach aber eigentlich gar nicht so wichtig. Die Stärke des Buchs liegt im Dialog mit "Gott" :)

This book clearly is a love letter to Louisiana and in that it does not disappoint. What I take issue with is the Audio version of the book. It is read by an actress who has mastered the art of up-talk and vocal fry. Every sentence is made more complex by the application of inflection prior to the period? Like, I guess, to make it more interesting?

This could be forgiven as the main character is supposed to be a spoiled rich girl from DC even if that was a rare affectation for a girl in the late 80s,Washington, DC. What really bothers me about this performance was the actor's lack of research into pronunciation. Every chapter features a total vocal failure of one word or another.

You do not eat a "Been-yet" at Cafe' du Monde. Renoir is not pronounced "Ren-war"

If you don't mind listening to a valley girl butchering Louisianian slang then this is for you.

Interesting setting, very nice if you go for this sort of literature

I read this book because it promised to present the "old" New Orleans and its way of life. I enjoyed that part of it very much, and the plot line was interesting. At the end, though, I found myself wondering why there was so much emphasis on what different characters were feeeling. Then suddenly I realized that OMG I'm the wrong gender to be reading this book! I still finished it and enjoyed it as a whole.

Possessiveness is the opposite of love

Unusual, mostly likable heroine in an unusual situation. The story itself was rather predictable (especially the resolution with Claude) but the bottom line is that it kept me reading and I wanted to know what happened next. I have serious disagreement with some of the story's philosophy, particularly that possessiveness is a legitimate expression of love.

Good Gumbeaux

Kimberly Vargasâ novel, a light-hearted romance with some serious life-lesson scenes, is set in Bayou Bend, a small Louisiana college town. The main character, a young woman running from her wealthy family, enrolls in college to study art. When she loses her familyâs financial support and her scholarship, she goes to work at the Gumbeaux café, which becomes the hub of her life. The gumbo served there is âscience, art and magic.â

The characters are strong and well developed, as is the setting. The Louisiana tourism agency ought to put Vargas (who lives in California) on retainer for her glowing descriptions of Louisiana, its people, culture and geography. Sometimes I felt like I was reading a historical marker or a sight-seeing brochure, but I enjoy facts and history so I appreciated the detours.

Post apocalypse without the brutality

If I say this was a sweet post apocalyptic novel it will sound crazy, but this is a story of a man coming to terms with harsh realities where he has a choice - join civil society or remain in both an idealized past and brutal future. I loved the author's gentle, unpolished voice and simple style. This is a little bit adventure, mystery and love story - hard to classify but moving and compelling. I highly recommend it.

What made the experience of listening to Rivers the most enjoyable?

I LOVED having Michael Ferris Smith read his own book. I believe it added to the experience.

What did you like best about this story?

I was never quite sure what was around the next bend and he kept me guessing. Didn't see the end coming at all.

What about Michael Farris Smiths performance did you like?

He has a magnificiently smooth Southern voice which truly drew you into the book. You almost felt like it was Cohen telling you about his experience. Marvelous!

Narration distracts from story

I hate to give a bad review to an author reading his own work, but I cannot finish listening to this book. Mr. Smith's style of writing uses many, many conjunctions, particularly "and." Sometimes we get a a sentence that uses "or" instead. Because Mr.

The best Thompson Sister book so far!!

This book can be read as a stand alone, ironically, I hadn't realized until I started this book that I had already listened to the first Thompson Sister's book called Remember to Breathe. I enjoyed this book a lot better than the first. In the beginning, we get an opposites attract between a newbie playboy rock star and rich upper class Harvard girl. Julia has been struggling with a dark tragic event that took place yrs ago. Crank well he's that talented sexy rock star working his way to his dream. His parents are separated and Crank helps his father with his autistic brother. Basically, Julia makes an impression on Crank & he decides to write a song about her. That song gets their career started after signing with s record company. They both learn to break down each others walls, fall in love, and make their own future decisions. There is a lot more to the story so you'll just have to listen to it! I was interested from beginning to end.

Poor quality audio/narration

This may have been the poorest quality audiobook I've ever listened to. I had issues and inconsistencies with both narrators for Crank and Julia. I just couldn't stomach Crank's Boston accent. His voice for Julia didn't remotely resemble the hasty style she read with. He also didn't do a British accent for Serena, which the female narrator did. The female narrator did do a wonderful job on all the characters voices (I liked her voice for Crank better than his actual voice). However, she read so quickly, blowing past natural pauses and then creating pauses where there shouldn't be any. She also swallowed a lot (she was a noisy reader) and the overall recording when she read sounded "cheap" as if she were just pressing a tape recorder, not in any kind of professional sound booth.

The story itself was just OK for me.

A Disaster Novel...But NOT like you'd think.

SPOILER ALERT BELOW!

First off, if you are thinking of reading this book because you are a fan of the disaster/survival genre, here's a little advice: DON'T!

Although marketed as a sort of disaster novel, the concept never gels. Disasters Are "represented" ... sinkholes, corporate greed, flood, rainstorms, possible volcanoes and maybe the rapture... but none are given any real time. This is a Christian Novel that uses a skeleton of a bare bones "plot" to push its message down your throat in big heaping double handfuls. Nothing Wrong with Christian Novels, but don't bait and switch me.

The plot (if you call it that) is all over the place and has no real form. The Characters... I won't say they are cardboard because that would be giving to much credit. They are arch-types, at best. The good guy hero with a pure heart and a deep dark past, the executive who is so slimy you are praying for his death two pages after meeting him, the sexy woman who's a plaything of our bad guy and her insipid young son who is just so cute you want to hold his head underwater for a few chapters. That pretty much covers it except for a handful of paper cutouts who are introduced to be bumped off, add nausea.

If you want book that will give you maybe a spiritual uplift, this might do...though that end of things is as grey scale as the rest... otherwise, pass.

If you enjoyed the Supernatural Christian Suspense in Afloat

There is a complex of unique floating apartments in a cove that provides housing for a group of residents that include single mom Danielle Clement and her son Simeon. The project is partially complete of architect Vance Nolan, who seeks to move beyond his past tragedies by bringing to life a vision of people living on the water. Then, a sinkhole gives way. Death and destruction follow as rains flood the cove, an unnatural darkness comes, and a man is murdered. No one knows what is real or who can be trusted.

This has a lot of suspense and supernatural wonder. Vance is a person of light and tries to overcome his past to follow God.

What good things?

I have not read a novel with such two-dimensional characters caught in such a flimsy, transparent plot in a long time. I don't even like to insult the "chick lit" genre by categorizing it as such. Middle-aged single woman getting by, even making good, by virtue of her own talents, loses her grasp on the good life, and despite acting like a total idiot, ends back up on top, bigger than ever--But this time, with a filthy rich, handsome, considerate man to love her. Oops, did I spoil it for you? Nope, we all saw it coming, every bit.

Capture Your Own Memories As Another Explores Deaths, Dying and Family Secrets!

Starting a drama revolving around a family will normally contain much that will touch readers personally. I am sure this will be the case if you follow the more than one million readers that have already enjoyed this novel. The author lives in Hamburg, Germany, where the setting also takes place. There were a couple of connections for me, but the family story as told and experienced by Iris, the young grandchild, will pull you in with the smells of the fields of apples, currant bushes, et. al., along with the fresh country air that seems to reach out as you read more and more...

My memories include fresh, delicious apples and pears picked from the trees, or picked up from the ground, just as Iris remembered. She had always loved visiting her grandmother Bertha; still, she was surprised, along with the rest of the family, that her grandmother's house came to her, with only the properties being divided among her three girls... She would have felt better if the house had gone, first, to her mother, and then be passed on to her. Bertha had made her own decisions, instead. I remember that a close sister of my mother had left her inheritance to Mom's four children. She lived with me and I learned of the hurt she felt for not having had it come to her first, which is what she had understood would happen.

So many secrets come out at the death of a family member, don't they? Or, if not, they continue to fester and affect those who are left. Just by being the new home-place owner, Iris was to learn much of what had happened in the lives of her relatives...

Bertha had been the dominant leader in the home, while her husband spent most of the time in his office...But one day while picking apples, she had fallen and like many women, immediately got up, brushed herself off and went on working.
