My best legal read in years
Where does Trial of Passion rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
This is the best legal "listen" to date. I have been doing audio books as well as my regular reading for a number of years. The performance was as good or better than the story which I liked as well. I adore the main character whose droll hunor and love of poetry conflict with tough advocate he is.
What was one of the most memorable moments of Trial of Passion?
The cresendo builds up to the finale in the court room I felt that a little hokey. I enjoyed his inner struggles with his past and future as well as his thoiughts during the legal proceedings. I have been a criminal defense lawyer for well over 50 years and really comisserated with the feelings so beautifully expressed.I have had many trials that had great emotion and some with much press but I could never tell the story as well as the author. I am a big fan of Grisham, Turow as well as Rumpole. I don't know how I missed Mr Deverell til now.
Have you listened to any of John Morgans other performances before? How does this one compare?
    Noi, but he's wonderful
Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?
I actually laughed out loud while listening to the book. The wit of the Barrister turned farmer and his island adventures was most entertaining. The drama of the trial cannt be ignored.Handling trancript and courtroom colloquoys is an art. He has it.He weaves in his own feelins ,introspection and fears very well.
    Any additional comments?
I intend to listen to Mr Morgan as often as I can and Mr Deverell has an 82 year old trial lawyer as a new fan
A poet writes a legal drama. Who knew!
I love this book. I've never reviewed a book, but this one is special. While the drama is engaging and gripping, the language used to tell the story is melodic and thoughtful. And it's more than just a drama. The protagonist recognizes the beauty in life, the complexity in people, and the value of the journey. And John Michael Morgan is an ideal narrator. He makes me want to hear this story over and over again. His talent truly conveys the poetic nature of the authors words. This is my first William Deverell novel, but it certainly won't be my last!
You Might REEEEELY Like this Or Not
You like a murder/legal/psychological thriller with bodies littering the set and gun smoke thicker than gallons of blood spew? This AIN"T your novel. Actually it's two novels for the price of one.
    1. A legal/psychological puzzle that' maximum improbable but William Deverell will make you suspend disbelief At least he did me.

    You'll Love Bones
This is a great story of healing and self-discovery. When I started the story I was skeptical that a man could write from a woman's perspective. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself totally immersed in the story. The story is well rounded and I found myself tearing up right along with the character and cheering for her happy ending. Get this and Tim's other books!
    A heartwarming must read
Another gorgeous story from this author. A short novella about a very endearing squirrel, a woman who has returned to her home town after a break-up and a septic tank that meeds a major over-hall. The end is totally heart-warming. I loved this one.
Tear jerker and all round good read
Tim Greaton does not disappoint in this novella, showing the heroine Kathy's dilemma and disappointment with her life. I loved this simply told story and marvelled at his understanding of the female psyche. When I say this story was simply told, I do not mean that it is "simple" just that it is straightforward, easy to read, sensitive and charming. It also had the happy ending for which I was hoping :)
Do read this, it is well worth the investment of time and money...
    Good Read
Just finished Bones in the Tree. I really enjoyed the smooth, comfortable feel of the story. Loved the characters, which seemed well developed for a short story. Tim painted his scenes masterfully, decorating my imagination with a quaint, Maine setting. The pace of the story worked well and he kept me interested from beginning to end.
Bones is in the tree and yard
Neat look at changes in life. Inspiring, emotional, thoughtful, thought provoking and humorous.
This is not what I expected but defiantly a good read. It is what I needed on this rainy day.

    Disappointing!
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
In all fairness, I am only just 2 hours into this book, but I am more disappointed with this work than any I can recall in all my 7 plus years of buying audio books. The author rambles on endlessly with no real direction. I cannot recall a single word or detail from the past 2 hours. She has described a variety of people, her boyfried, her dad and her mom in the past 2 hours with no real connection to the story. I am hoping it gets better, but not sure I have the stomach to listen to much more. If you're looking for an engaging read with a story that draws you in, this is not it, at least not immediately (or shortly thereafter).
What do you think your next listen will be?
    Not sure, but searching now.
Have you listened to any of Mary Robinette Kowals other performances before? How does this one compare?
No; but the problem is not the narrator. It's the slow dry start to the story.
Was The Museum of Abandoned Secrets worth the listening time?
    Not so far.
    Any additional comments?
    I want a refund!
    A new favourite
The use of language and the voice acting both make this book one of my all time favourites. It provides a tantalizing glimpse into Soviet Ukraine and identity in the modern country. I highly recommend it.

    Title: Fobbit
    Author: David Abrams
    Narrator: David Drummond
    Format: Unabridged
Length: 10 hrs and 32 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 09-10-12
    Publisher: Tantor Audio
Ratings: 3.5 of 5 out of 40 votes
    Genres: Fiction, Contemporary
    Publisher's Summary:
Fobbit 'fä-bit, noun. Definition: A U.S. soldier stationed at a Forward Operating Base who avoids combat by remaining at the base, esp. during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2011). Pejorative.
In the satirical tradition of Catch-22 and M*A*S*H, Fobbit takes us into the chaotic world of Baghdad's Forward Operating Base Triumph. The Forward Operating base, or FOB, is like the back-office of the battlefield - where people eat and sleep, and where a lot of soldiers have what looks suspiciously like an office job. Male and female soldiers are trying to find an empty Porta Potty in which to get acquainted, grunts are playing Xbox, and watching NASCAR between missions, and a lot of the senior staff are more concerned about getting to the chow hall in time for the Friday night all-you-can-eat seafood special than worrying about little things like military strategy.
Darkly humorous and based on the author's own experiences in Iraq, Fobbit is a fantastic debut that shows us a behind-the-scenes portrait of the real Iraq war.
    Critic Reviews:
"This novel nails the comedy and the pathos, the boredom and the dread, crafting the Iraq War's answer to Catch-22." (Publishers Weekly)
    Members Reviews:
    Puts the FU-nny in FUBAR
Wildly funny with a sarcastic wit so sharp, you could shave a gorilla. Abrams writes from his own 20 years with the Army as a journalist. The inhabitants of Fobbit are a handful of whacked characters with different backgrounds and personalities -- all described as spineless (or more accurately...Abrams describes the northern migration of their testicles), all only doing their best for God and country to stay out of the war. It will take someone who has been there and done that to actually judge this book; from someone just observing...this read like Laurel and Hardy meet al Qaeda, or a book that has decided to just lay it out there and define FUBAR. The really unfunny thing is...this is based on reality.
Abrams' writing is clever and unforgiving; he has a talent for describing characters we can relate to because we've all flubbed something up beyond repair, and we've all been less than noble at one time or another. He often attacks even the most *sacred* with his sharp cynical wit...the officer locked in his quarters with his hoarde of *care boxes*, sifting through the letters from grade school children (one where a child says he hates his teacher but that's okay because even his dad says shes a bitter old washed up woman), reading (awful, flowery) poetry from a woman in a bad marriage, stockpiling an overabundance of Wet Wipes and socks.
The plot is a bit weak, overshadowed by such strong characters and their in-the-moment snafus. It reminded me of listening to a M*A*S*H*-a-thon, except you liked (and could admire) Hawkeye and Trapper. The Fobbit's aren't so likeable, and unless you can admire the guy that sneaked a duke in the Colonel's helmet...
Lots of reviews said this was comparable to Catch 22 and Slaughterhouse Five, and that comparison pointed out the weakness of this book to me. Those books clearly expressed how horrible the wars were, the toll on the people involved. Fobbit keeps you too entertained with the antics, you don't really stop to think about the real impact of war.

    A Good Buy
Surprisingly good! Well worth the buck ninety-nine price. I would buy others. Some plot twists a bit unbelievable but it still kept me involved.
I could do with less emotional maundering & the reason for Sam not being with the woman he loves really wasn't believable. He's bad luck? Then why doesn't he split with his partner too? Factual lore of the desert was a plus for me, I like to learn from what I read and I appreciate of the accurate descriptions of the guns in the story. All in all, a pleasant surprise.
This One will keep you Entertained!
An interesting history storyline about Clint Walker's involvement in writing this book. It's a long, long, long western story; interesting and entertaining until the end. Plenty of action, bad guys and good guys and gal as well. If you like western suspense, action, the desert, and good western plots, you'll enjoy this story. It's a winner.
Yaqui Gold is Real Gold for the Readers
If you love well written westerns, this book is for you. The descriptions of the characters bring them to life giving the book reality to an imaginary person and story line. I appreciate that this author takes the time and research to make it real. I recommend this book to young and old as there is no vulgarity to discourage young readers.
    Five Stars
    Enjoyed reading...
    Excellent characters and storyline!!!
Great western full of adventure and true-to-life historical characters that you like immediately. Enjoyed the well-told action and felt the pain of the conflicts, mental and physical. I did not want the story to end and can't wait for Book 2 !! Hope to read it soon Clint and Kirby. Great job!!!

    Typical story line
I like the way the story captivates you but it was typical story line in that you knew what was to come before it happened. Overall it was good.
    BORING WITH A CAPITAL B
    Any additional comments?
I stuck it out till nearly the end just waiting for SOMETHING to happen.
    Great Audiobook
Where does The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D. rank among all the audiobooks youve listened to so far?
It ranks pretty high. I didn't want to put the audiobook on pause after listening to it.
What other book might you compare The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D. to and why?
Lucy Clarkes - The Sea Sisters ~They both have journals and deal with the issue of losing someone close to them.
What about Angela Brazils performance did you like?
I loved Angles Brazil's ability to bring out the emotion in the character.
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
    Yes, this definitely was.
    Boring. Nothing "Wowed" Me.....
Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?
I wouldnt recommend this book to a friend. this book was boring. There was no climax or anything exciting. It just felt like I was reading the lives of 2 everyday couples dealing with their everyday "issues"..... Nothing Wowed me..... Waste of my time.
What could Nichole Bernier have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
Give some sort of explosive ending or even something exciting in the middle of the book.
How did the narrator detract from the book?
the Narrator read very slowly (and i had the speed turned up to normal). she also tried WAY too hard to pronounce evey syllable of every word..... a little over the top.
Could you see The Unfinished Work of Elizabeth D. being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?
    No.
    Perceptive Reflections on Parenthood, Friendships
Interesting characters and premise. Thoughtful observations of relationships, what we know and don't know, transitions. Built around unknown of what one person's journals reveal.

    Sadness Darkens the Village
Life does happen and that is what this series about the Scottish village of Prior's Ford is written about. The previous books had laughter, harmony and heart soreness I would say. This edition was a sharp contrast.
A member of the community dies and leaves letters of what she 'really' thought which are interpreted as 'Poison Pen' letters. The entire community is appalled. Even the new comer - Amy Rose is determined to get to the bottom of this.
Sadness falls upon Tarbethall. Really much darker than I saw coming, yet, upon reflection, I do understand it. I actually sobbed during this chapter.
Ingrid has moved back to Norway and the Colour Carousel is the new store in town. Helen is happy with the change.
Life goes on and I will follow it...just a bit sadder though.

    An author at her best
This is Susan Hill at the top of her form. I really enjoyed this book all the way to the finish.
It is a beautifully written, evocative book, with all the deft touches Hill fans expect.
There are moments of Dickensian brilliance: perfect names, unusual characters, and yes, a convenient coincidence or two. At other times, the piece becomes Kafkaesque: is our protagonist on a senseless quest, inexorably led on from one place to another only to find his ruin?
The search for the elusive Vane culminates in an ending which leaves more questions unanswered than resolved. I love that in an otherworldly tale like this. I recommend it to all who love a chilling ghost story, but save it for this fall, when a chill is in the air...
A rare find in the world of ghost stories!
Believe me when I say I have read a lot of ghost stories!
This is so well-written (by the author of The Woman in Black) and the descriptions are so vivid that it is like being right there in a haunted library at a very old boys school in England. Many other locales and situations in the book spring to life with the able narration of Matt Addis. I am so reluctant to have this book end that I have been rationing it out on my walks to make it last!
Get it - you will not regret it, and you will have a good story to listen to around the fire as autumn and the holidays approach. There is a great chapter showcasing Christmas in the English countryside.
It is so rewarding to find a tale like this - enjoy!
    Thank you Susan Hill!
    Snore fest
I'm giving this two stars because of the high-quality writing. When it comes to dramatic prose, Susan Hill can't be beat. But yet, the story was drowning in the pages upon pages of setting details. When James Mommouth walks into a room, we get flooded with every painstaking detail - from the wallpaper patterns to the specks of dust on the bookshelf. Typically with audiobooks, I tend to appreciate these long, meandering riffs because I don't miss out on anything important when my mind wanders. But geez - this lady takes mood and setting to a whole new level of overindulgence. After the first couple chapters I was already tired of this stuffy man's inner monologue as he crept around dark rooms. I really didn't care for this dude, especially when he likened himself to a "scared silly woman" in one of his many eventless eerie interludes. Needless to say, this is my first and last Susan Hill book. For gothic horror, I'll turn to Barbara Michaels or Wendy Webb.
    I couldn't stay interested
It was a struggle to finish, but since I loved Woman in Black, I was sure that if I hung in there, then it would get better, reach its climax and would be worth it. There was no climax, in fact, just the opposite. What a disappointment.
    Not for me.
Guess I expected more having read all her crime novels, which I love.
