A Metro Police officer — a Marine veteran who had served with the department since 2023 — was killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck during a gun battle with an armed suspect near East Tropicana Avenue and Mountain Vista Street, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said.

McMahill said the officer, Austin Abdelnabi, 30, was rushed to University Medical Center, where medical staff fought to save him.

Nevada officials are declaring victory over Yucca Mountain — even as some experts cautioned the federal government’s pivot away from the long-stalled and controversial nuclear waste repository may create new problems.

The U.S. Department of Energy announced Tuesday that five states have agreed to accept nuclear waste from around the country in exchange for federal help to develop nuclear energy and create thousands of jobs, a shift that could permanently scrap plans for the controversial repository about 100 miles northwest of Las Vegas.

That’s the trade-off at the center of a growing fight that has reached Congress.

In June, Sen. Jacky Rosen, D-Nev., signed on as a cosponsor of the SAFEGUARD Veterans Act, which calls for reinstating criminal penalties against unaccredited companies that charge unauthorized fees and aims to ban predatory tactics in VA benefit assistance. Gas prices in Nevada kept climbing this week, with the statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline rising 14 cents to $4.69, according to AAA’s weekly fuel report.

Nationwide, the average price for regular gasoline rose 15 cents from last week to $4.09 per gallon.
