Democrat Aaron Ford holds a narrow edge over Republican Gov. Joe Lombardo in Nevada’s governor’s race, according to a poll released today by Emerson College Polling and KLAS-TV.

The survey found 44% of Nevada voters support Ford, the state attorney general, while 42% back Lombardo. Eleven percent said they are undecided.

The Las Vegas Raiders are giving $25 million to Intermountain Health in the largest philanthropic commitment in franchise history, the organizations announced Monday, to help build Nevada’s first stand-alone children’s hospital.

The gift was led by Raiders owners Mark Davis, Egon Durban and Michael Meldman, each of whom contributed $5 million toward the project. The Raiders organization committed an additional $10 million.

A group of Robert E. Lake Elementary School kindergartners were practicing vowel sounds using words beyond the basic “cat” or “hat.”

The children called out “escalera,” “elefante,” “elote” and “escoba” — or, in English, ladder, elephant, corn, broom. They weren’t learning vocabulary words in Spanish just for novelty’s sake.

They’re students in an opt-in, dual-language immersion program that educators hope will make them not just bilingual but biliterate by the time they advance to middle school — making them competitive in a global economy and enriching their academic achievement in English.
