Late Game Meltdown Spoils the Sweep

Listen Later

The Nats were on their way to a sweep of the Giants on Wednesday afternoon before it began to unravel in the 8th. Mark (From San Francisco) & Al react to the gut punch 11-10 loss that concluded on a walk-off Grand Slam.  Washington led 9-1 entering the bottom of the 8th before allowing five runs in each of the final two frames.

(07:00) Mitchell Parker was given the ball in the bottom of the 9th and did not retire either batter that he faced.  Parker gave up the Grand Slam to Bryce Eldridge, a native of Vienna, VA.  Blake Butera said afterwards that Richard Lovelady was not available, so Parker was the only available lefty option in that moment.

(16:00) Blake Butera said it was the worst loss of the season and that this one stings.

(20:45) Foster Griffin only allowed one run in six innings before the bullpen fumbled away the lead. Griffin struck out five Giants and his ERA is now down to 3.46 through fourteen starts.

(24:00) The offense had a major day despite the loss as they hit two homers, scored ten runs, and collectively stole five bases. Nasim Nuñez swiped his 25th bag of the season; which is the most in all of Baseball. James Wood hit his 18th home run; which is tied for 3rd most in the National League.

(28:30) CJ Abrams was given the day off ahead of Thursday's off day. Nuñez took over at SS and Jorbit Vivas got the start at 2B on Wednesday.

(31:15) The Nationals open a six game home stand on Friday night.  Seattle is in town for the first three games and then Kansas City takes over the visiting clubhouse on Monday.
