The Archers and their Debut Album, These Wicked Woods

This fine Canadian group, The Archers, consists of what I call 4 old souls – Sandy Hughes, Ethan Caleb, Liam Moes, and Liam McLaren… I call them old souls because although very young, their music already has the maturity typical of fine wine – the harmonies, the lyrics – the perfect mixture of genres – so that people like us (Show hosts and such), can’t easily put them into any one category!

Their full-length debut album was just released on April 15th of this year and recorded in Monarch Studios (Vancouver). Having been formed right out of high school, The Archers share the roles of lead vocals, guitar, piano, bass, drums, mandolin – even the banjo! They’re like the next generational fab four of a new roots/rock music movement.

The Honeyrunners are a fusion of Rock with the weathered soul of Motown mixed in with some 60’s folk.  They have a second EP coming up this summer.  Their music has been part of national ad campaigns - from Bacardi to CocaCola, and they’ve performed in music festivals across Canada. Last week we did an interview with Canadian singer/songwriter James Keelaghan.  And what I found interesting about James, is that for most of his 25-year music career, he worked as an independent artist.  He’s brilliant – talented – and one of the best singer/songwriters in Canada.  And we have some magnificent independent artists on the job right now throughout Canada. But what of the other professional arenas?  How far can you go working as an independent?  What about in politics?

We’re excited to have Poor Angus join us for this week’s show. From out of Hamilton, Ontario band members include Andrew Bryan, Ross Griffiths, Joel Guenther, DJ Moons and Brian LeBlanc.

They’ve just released their CD titled Gathering – and I immediately fell in love with it. They’re a Celtic band with a huge twist of folk – And they’re taking both Canada and the U.S. by storm with this latest album.  I caught up with Brian LeBlanc of the group earlier this week in Hamilton, Ontario.  We talk about the making of the group, the making of this latest album – and about the song, Something I Can’t See, which landed them in the final four out of 3,000 bands in CBC’s Searchlight competition.  Click the play link at the top of this page to hear our conversation – along with some of their great music!

Neil Young – Critics Say he’s been stepping on his tongue… 

He’s anything but Helpless.  He has his music… He has a following… and as of late he has a new cause.  Up until now – he’s been a jewel in Canadian music – making us proud at home and abroad… Things change when you take on big gas and oil.

First - a bit of background.  It started when Neil Young put on an Honour the Treaties tour to raise funds for the benefit of the Northern Alberta First Nations people  - the funds raise of which will be put toward helping to fight oil sands development and to raise awareness of aboriginal rights in Canada.

During his tour – he likened Fort McMurray to what happened in Hiroshima… he also said that oil exports represent only about 2% of GDP...

That was enough for the opposition (big oil and the Harper government) to dig in their heels.  Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, Joe Oliver says the GDP represents far more than 2% and attracts projects that account for tens of billions of dollars back into the Canadian economy and employs tens of thousands of people.  When it comes to Neil Young, Oliver says, "he doesn’t have his facts right and he’s using his fame to advance a story which is fundamentally false…"  – And so the dance begins…

Joelle May of ModMay Promotions joins us to weigh in on her opinion on the matter – all this after coming to Neil Young's defence through social media.  She's a music promoter who has worked with countless musicians with "what music does.."  It's an interesting perspective.  Be sure to tune in!

Bicycles - No Longer a Free Ride?

From Neil Young's Rockin' in the Free world, and his gallant fight with big oil to "Hang on to your helmets!"  We explore the idea of bringing back a license to ride... a bike.  All this because of one woman – Chicago City Councillor, Pat Dowell – she’s sparked a debate about licensing and taxing cyclists for the use of roads and bike lanes.  Specifically she's proposing an annual $25 fee for bike riders in Chicago.

Her rationale - "we have an increase in bike ridership in the city, have provided bike lanes for bike riders and they utilize the road, just like the people who drive cars and trucks.”  This lively discourse has spread to Canada… with talks of a higher fee.  So we stopped by a bike shop – in this case the City Cyclery in Windsor, Ontario and spoke with Chris Holt, Stephen Hargeaves and Nancy Yim-Holt to get their opinions.  Let us know your thoughts as well – after you listen to this segment of the show - are you fo...

Are Train Derailments Making a Case for Pipelines?

The catastrophic train derailment in Lac-Mégantic, Quebec (Jul 6, 2013)

Train derailments are happening at a time when debates and dialogue about support for – and opposition against pipelines for the transportation of oil are at an all time high

Deadlines for decisions to determine the fate of two pipelines are coming up – the Keystone XL and the Northern Gateway… and it just seems that the wrong decision might be made because we can’t seem to get a handle on stopping or doing what we can to prevent these derailments…

Which is riskier – rail or pipeline?  And is what’s being presented as solutions our only options?  Does it have to be an “either / or” thing?  Are we missing something?

A small group of truckers use the resources at their disposal to make a point – and it’s simple: they want government back to work… they want the American economy to open back up for business - and they’re not alone.
When the results of one poll by NBC News and the Wallstreet Journal were released earlier this week about where the American Public stood in its views of the U.S. government shutdown – at least one party began shuffling to deliver dialogue of who was responsible for all that has happened.

In short – 70% of those polled said they were not in support of the Tea Party Movement –

And more importantly, when asked this question:

“As you know, President Obama and the Republicans in Congress have not reached a budget agreement, and this has led to a shutdown of the federal government. Who do you think is more to blame for this shutdown - President Obama or the Republicans in Congress?“ – here were the answers:
Republicans in Congress – 53%
President Obama – 31%
Both equal (VOL)  – 13%
Not sure  – 3%
