December 15, 2023Stop Demonizing People with Mental Health ConditionsMental health stigma is a societal problem that has a significant negative impact on people with mental health conditions. The stigma can lead to reduced hope, lower self-esteem, increased symptoms, difficulties at work, and a lower likelihood of maintaining treatment plans. It can also lead to discrimination in the workplace, housing, healthcare, and more. The stigma is often rooted in negative stereotypes about mental illness that are reinforced in our culture and media. These stereotypes can be particularly harmful for marginalized groups, who may already face discrimination and prejudice. In The Housemaid’s case, mental health stigma further terrorized Nina; on top of the abuse she experienced, society was against her, too.To truly break down the Mental Health stigma, it has to be addressed at multiple levels. While talking about mental health is a great starting place, more will be needed to truly better the lives of those with mental health conditions. November 24, 2023Beloved by Toni MorrisonI dive into the haunting tale of Sethe, a former slave who made the agonizing decision to kill her own child, Beloved, rather than let her experience the horrors of slavery. In the forward, Toni Morrison lists writers with outrageous talent and I encourage us all to read some of their work: Toni Cade Bambara, June Jordan, Gayle Jones, Lucille Clifton, Henry Dumas, Leon Forrest… She lists scholars with original ideas and hands-on research. I also recommend we read their work: William Hinton’s Shen Fan.. Ivan Van Sertima’s They Came Before Columbus.. Karen DeCrow’s Sexist Justice… Chinweizu’s The West and The Rest of Us.. and some public figures eager to set the record straight, they're the most mainstream on this list and will help guide you through life- Angela Davis, Muhammad Ali, and Huey Newton.Toni Morrison's Article in the New Yorker, "Make America White Again"....more25minPlay

November 03, 2023Quit Like A Woman: The Radical Choice to Not Drink In A Culture Obsessed with Alcohol, by Holly WhitakerAlcohol is a harmful, addictive drug.Society has a misconception of what it means to be alcoholic. Alcoholism is not about the amount of drinks you have per week, but about whether drinking negatively impacts your life and continuing to drink anyway. Current recovery programs, such as AA, were created by white men in the 1930s and are not inclusive of women or people of the global majority. The author proposes a "feminine centric recovery" framework that assumes you are already whole and perfect, and that the problem is with the system, not with you. This approach focuses on self-advocacy, mothering yourself, growing your own agency, growing a skill set, setting clear boundaries, embracing the world, cultivating a sense of power, and self-trust. We should do away with the labels "alcoholic" and "alcoholism" because they assert that it is normal to consume an addictive substance with ease and abnormal to not be able to, and that they prevent all drinkers from observing their own relationship with alcohol. These terms shame people for life and that they absolve alcohol companies of their role in mass producing, marketing, and selling this dangerous drug....more25minPlay

October 13, 2023Adelaide, by Genevieve WheelerThe protagonist, Adelaide, navigates challenges such as endometriosis, family mental health issues, and past traumatic relationships. Adelaide's journey is marked by self-destructive behavior and her involvement with Rory, who fails to treat her as she deserves. She also grapples with her relationship with alcohol, often using it as a coping mechanism. Her character frequently puts others' needs above her own, reflecting a common pattern where women feel the need to constantly please others, often at the expense of their own well-being.I also advocate for meaningful societal changes, such as universal healthcare, fair wages, and stable housing, all of which play vital roles in reducing suicide rates and improving overall mental well-being.
