This time out we enjoy some musical mayhem courtesy of Mickey Katz whose Yiddish-themed song parodies assaulted eardrums from the 1940s to the 1980s. A musical prodigy, Mickey got his show business start in amateur talent shows in his hometown of Cleveland and he served his country by playing in USO bands during WW2. While a short-lived pairing with another novelty master (Spike Jones) didn't take, Mickey soon built a formidable solo career by taking popular tunes and recasting the lyrics into enthusiastically delivered if sometimes incomprehesible yiddish. Fun fact: In addition to his solo career, Mickey also conducted the band at Beverly Hills Friars Club events for over 25 years! This time we tip our Laugh Tracks caps to Jim Jefferies, a fearless comic who is one of Australia's finest exports. From the standup stage to a highly-regarded FX series to a politically oriented comedy talk show, Jim has never really strayed from who he is -- a very smart and sarcastic observer of the modern condition who is always willing to point out his own foibles in the process. Travel with us back in time to a Catskills resort in the 1950s. You're having a great time and notice that the featured stand-up comic is also the emcee, the game leader, and the campfire host. That was the mark of a "tummler" -- Yiddish for an all around entertainer who kept the energy high. And, if you were lucky, your tummler might have been the great Jan Murray who became a fixture on television variety, talk, and game shows as well as the standup stage from the 1950s through the 1980s. From the Edinburgh Fringe Festival to stages around the world Ireland's Dylan Moran has charmed audiences with a style that is pointed but playful. But standup isn't all there is to Dylan, who has been featured in movies such as "Notting Hill" and "Shaun of the Dead" and starred in "Black Books", a wickedly funny BBC series about a sardonic and constantly inebrieated London bookseller that twice won the BAFTA award for Best Situation Comedy. So there are legends and then there are LEGENDS! This time we meet one of the latter -- Lucille Ball, the first lady of American television comedy. From early stage and movie appearances, Lucy worked her way up the show business ladder. When she was offered the chance to adapt a comedy radio show about an "odd couple" marriage for television she jumped at the chance, provided that her real life husband Desi Arnaz played her spouse. "I Love Lucy" was born and her place in the show business pantheon was secure. But there was so much more, not the least being here role as the first female head of a television production company (Desilu productions). No wonder the National Comedy Center Museum is located in her hometown of Jamestown, NY. As always, find extended clips in the comments at laughtracksradio.com and thanks for sharing our shows.
