Understanding A Very Important Analogy
God portrays Himself as a Shepherd and us as sheep.
Understanding this relationship will greatly benefit not only our understanding of who God is
and why, but also to teach us what our responsibilities are as his children (or sheep).
What are some of the Bible names for men serving in this role?

Why do we have or need shepherds (elders)?
Eph. 4:11:12, “to ___________ the _________ for the ________ of ministry, for ____________ ____ the body of Christ”
Ezekiel 34 also helps us understand the need for a good shepherd is for protection and
provision for the flock. (The flocks of God’s people)
In John 10 Jesus calls Himself both the door of the sheep and The Good Shepherd.
This is another illustration of Jesus being: The Way, The Truth, & The Life as taught in John 14:6
In 1 Peter 5:5 we are told to be ___ ______________ to our elders. When we understand the
God-given pattern for shepherds and their responsibilities, we should do this willingly.
Why is Jesus as The Good Shepherd, and our shepherds here at Laurel Canyon so needed?
Isaiah 53:6 tells us, “________ we like sheep have ________ ________”
LORD, Help us to always be looking for and following after our Shepherds!

Let’s take a look and see why the way we communicate about spiritual things matters. Remember the great power of our words!
Let’s look at what Paul was teaching the saints in Colossae as captured in Colossians 1:21-24:
Did Max & Susie have a problem understanding each other? YES / NO
They were using the same word but it had different _____________.
Did Norm & Ed have trouble understanding each other? YES / NO
People often use the word ”church” to mean a religious _______________.
We really need to understand and properly communicate that the church that Jesus died for is more like a ______________ ______________ of God’s people.
In Ephesians 5:27 Paul talked about how Jesus wanted the church to be “in _____________”. He didn’t want it to have any spots or wrinkles. He wanted it to
be HOLY and without ____________.”
NOW, DO YOU THINK HE WAS TALKING ABOUT OUR BUILDING, OR US?

WHY IS BAPTISM?
Let’s look together and see what the Bible has to say about the NECESSITY of
baptism in the life of someone striving for heaven.
In 1 Peter 3:21 baptism is compared to the flood of Genesis 7 in that saved Noah and his family.
It is said that baptism now ________ _______.
Some have no idea of the real danger of sin in general. More specifically the sin in their own
lives that they will have to give an answer for! See 2 Corinthians 5:10:
“For ___ must ______ appear before the _______________ ________ of Christ, so that each one may receive what is ______ for what he has _______ ___ ______ ________, whether _______ or _______.
• We are ALL guilty of sin: Romans 3:23
• Sin separates us from God: Isaiah 59:1-2
• We MUST guard our hearts!: Proverbs 4:23
What did Peter tell to those present to do once they were convicted of their sin against the Son of God? (Ref. Acts 2:38)
“Peter said to them, _____________ and be ____________ every one of you!”
But why baptism?
Baptism is where the sinner contacts the symbolic and powerful blood of Christ which cleanses
us from all sin!
• -Mt. 26:28 & Acts 2:28 connects the blood of Christ with baptism for forgiveness of sins
• -Rom 5:10 & 6:3 connects the blood of Christ with baptism for reconciliation
• -Rev. 1:5 & Acts 22:16 connects the blood of Christ with baptism for cleansing of sin
• -Rom5:9 & Mk. 16:16 connects the blood of Christ and baptism for SALVATION!

We must respect the power of our words.
Matthew 12:36-37 give us these warnings:
“I say to you that for every ________ word men may speak, they will ________ ______________ of it in the day of _________________. For by your __________ you will be ________________, and by your words you will be _______________.”
What does it mean to take the Lord’s name in vain? ___________________________________________________________________
What happens if or when we do this? (ref. Ex.20:7) __________________________
A regular fervent prayer we should be praying to help us safeguard our speech is found in Psalms 141:3:
“Set a ________, O LORD, over my _________; Keep watch over the _______ of my __________.”
As a general truth to keep in mind at all times as we are being careful with our words is found in Ephesians 4:29:
Let no corrupting _______ come out of your mouths, but only such as is good for ___________ ____, as fits the occasion, that it may ______ ________ to those who _______.
“A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold in a setting of silver. Like a gold ring or an ornament of gold is a wise reprover to a listening ear."
