  • LAL Daily — November — Norm is in D.C.

Norm opens the week from the famed swamp and our nation's great capitol, Washington, D.C. He is, of course, in D.C. for purposes of the criminal defense on behalf of one Joseph R. Biggs. Joe Biggs is one of several Proud Boys criminal defendants arrested in connection with the events of January 6, 2021, and who has by and through a third superseding federal criminal indictment been charged with seditious conspiracy. For those of you so inclined, you may support a rather tortured Biggs' criminal defense team by making a contribution here: https://www.givesendgo.com/SSGBDF.

Norm and Mike spend time discussing the concept of rebellion as a theme of American history, anchored by the writings of Thomas Jefferson and Cicero, and with a reflection on events like Shay's Rebellion. What is the utility of rebellion, and has the concept been historically understood as functioning part of our republic's anatomy? If so, what do we make of our current historical amnesia? In other words, is a little bit of rebellion every now and thing a good thing?

The promised 'Red Wave' of 2022 manifested more as 'Purple Slush'. Chappelle has made another statement. Mike queries: how do we know whether current 'rebellion' is organic or synthetic? How we are as individuals to discern?

  • LAL Daily — Ron Coleman Joins the Stream! (November 8)

Mike will talk until he's blue in the face about what it's like to sink into a conversation between Norm Pattis and Ron Coleman. If you follow him on Twitter, you'll see endless GIFs and pictures of Larry Bird and Joel McHale—Boston Celtics legends. That is the sort of remarkable chemistry Norm and Ron share, especially on matters of human intellect and spirituality.

American culture was gripped for a week-long eternity by the remarks of none other than Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. Norm and Mike spent a patient week chiseling away at the essence of the controversy, each hesitant to give it a singular label. Something bigger was and is going on, right?

Ron Coleman is a highly skilled, New York attorney who specializes in matters of speech and civil rights. He is at this point a friend of the podcast. And from that basis of trust, LAL invited Ron to share his thoughts and insights on one of the most difficult topics in American culture today.

  • LAL Daily — November 8 — Online Anonymity and the Value of Speech

It was a 2-stream day for Law and Legitimacy. Norm and Mike open the morning with the daily morning back-and-forth.

Norm doesn't want to spend $8 per month on Twitter any more than he wants to throw $8 out the window every day, but he does see some potential upside to Elon Musk's plan for verification on the platform. This launches a discussion about anonymity and pseudonymity on social media. Is social media snark equivalent to the efforts of Publius and the Federalist Papers?

  • LAL Daily — November 3 — Pelosi and #YayforYe

Norm and Mike peel back the facts involving husband of the United States Speaker of the House, Paul Pelosi, in a recent domestic matter in the San Francisco couple's home. Are there any reliable news stories?

Should we be afraid of political violence on the horizon?

While most appear afraid to continue with honest discussion of the Ye cancellation, LAL stays in the saddle. The inimitable Ron Coleman will join LAL at 2:00pm ET on Tuesday, November 8.

  • LAL Daily — October 31 — Spooky!

Norm and Mike get it cracking on a Monday Halloween morning. Trick or treat?

Norm and Mike discuss Elon Musk's recent announcement of his intent to form a content moderation board for the purpose of handling content on the platform.

Depending on the lens through which one looks, Twitter represents an accessbile entry point in the conversation about globalism and what those like Alex Jones might really mean when a reference to such is made.

What is the outlook for Twitter under Elon?

  • LAL Daily — October 28 — Twitter, Musk, Speech, and Ye

The news was dominated on Friday by Elon Musk's taking the reigns at Twitter, firing most of the C-Suite, and intimating that positive developments in the domain of speech are to come from the platform.

Norm and Mike review Elon's letters to advertisers, and then inquire as to the status of the most notable banned accounts on the platform—namely, Alex Jones and Kanye West.

What should our expectations be for the platform's future? Will Elon keep his promises?

  • LAL Daily — October 27 — Ye or Nay?

Norm and Mike remain steadfast in their commitment to patiently and precisely analyze the matter of Ye vs. the World behind the former's statements concerning the "Jewish media."

Ye appeared on the Lix Fridman podcast last weekend. And in the wake of the corporate response to Ye's statements, Ye's YEEZY deal with Adidas has been terminated, along with his relationship with CAA, and various other material business relationships at home and abroad.

This is no doubt censorship, perhaps of the consequential variety. But Norm and Mike are preoccupied with the essence of the controversy. We should all be so preoccupied.

  • LAL Daily — October 26

Norm and Mike continue peeling back the layers of the Ye controversy and analyze the continuing fallout from various statements Ye made in connection with his mid-October appearance on "Drink Champs."

Norm and Mike each listened to a recent podcast on which Ye appeared, hosted by none other than Lex Fridman. We strongly encourage our listeners to supplement this stream episode by visiting the Lex Fridman interview with Ye.

  • LAL #080 — Norm Talks the Jones Verdict, Being Cancelled from Radio

    $965 million.

That's before attorneys fees. That's before punitive damages.

The Connecticut jury in the second of three lawsuits against Alex Jones in connection with his alleged defamatory statements concerning the victims of the Sandy Hook tragedy awarded the plaintiffs a record-breaking sum of nearly one billion dollars.

Hot off a grueling six weeks of trial, Norm dusts off his mic and takes Mike through the details of what will go down as the beginning of one of the most historic moments in American free speech jurisprudence.

If one were to let the internet decide, Alex is getting exactly what he deserves.

But what does that even mean? Veteran listeners of LAL understand our preoccupation with the theme of legitimacy as seen through the lens of the American legal system and the culture from which it is evermore downstream.

In a way, the absurd size of the jury award serves as perhaps the best contrast between the bedrock theory of justice—due process via legal findings on the merits of a case or controversy—and the contrived version of justice being served up to the masses at the incomprehensible expense of Alex Jones.

Mike takes particular interest in the procedural posture of the Jones case in an effort to have Norm illustrate for listeners how impossible of a scenario in which Jones and his legal team were intertwined.

What is a default judgment? What is the standard for the entry of a default judgment in general terms? How did such impact Jones' ability to defend against the claims of defamation and intentional infliction of emotional distress?

This is perhaps the most important episode of LAL to date.

It is also our formal notice to each of you that Norm is no longer the host of his daily two-hour segment on Connecticut radio. As Norm discusses toward the end of this episode, the uppers at the radio station decided that in the wake of the Jones verdict that the station was ill-equipped to handle controversy.

Fear not. LAL will begin livestreaming this week. And as the appellate process begins, so, too, does LAL's journey toward real cultural impact.

Find us. Share us. Rate us. Share us again. And then do it again. Stay tuned for the debut of LAL's daily show.
