  • 3. What is a cheval? - avec comedian Mark Steele

Episode Title: Celebrating French Language Day with Mark Steel

    Episode Description:

Happy French Language Day! That’s right, it’s a thing. De nos jours, tout a sa journée… Established by the UN in 2010, this day celebrates multilingualism and cultural diversity, promoting the equal use of its six official languages: English, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese.

Joining me today is none other than stand-up comedian and newspaper columnist Mark Steel. He’s written for The Guardian, The Independent, and the Daily Mirror, appeared on BBC TV and radio, and earlier this year, we performed shows together in the French Alps—in both English et en Français!

In this episode, Mark shares his experience of learning another language, specifically French. Though most of our conversation is in English, I’ll be sprinkling in some quick lessons and revisiting some brilliant language hacks that will have you recognizing hundreds, if not thousands, of words in French. Ooooh la la, magnifique, sacre bleu, fromage!

We dive into the quirks of language learning, from unexpected etymology (like

"cacking it" to the accidental comedy of pronunciation mishaps, and I’ll teach you a thing or two that’ll gave you more fluent than before.

If you enjoyed this episode, please rate it 5 stars on Apple Podcasts. It’ll help me help others learn languages!

  • K. Please & Thank you

I once saw a British tourist in Germany order food without even trying to speak German. No “please,” no “thank you,” just: “Can I get one of them sausages with the powder on it?” 🤦‍♂️

This got me thinking—why do some people make zero effort abroad? And more importantly, why don’t we all at least learn please and thank you in different languages?

So today, we're diving into the fascinating origins of these words across French, Spanish, Italian, Russian, Arabic, and Chinese, plus a few surprises! 🧐

  • I. Subject Verb Object

Mastering Word Order in Different Languages: Un Hack Pour Apprendre les Langues

📚 Bonne chance, good luck, buona fortuna, buena suerte !

  • H. Language Is Like Music

Learning a new language is like learning a musical instrument! 🎻🎶 Just like mastering the violin requires technique, repetition, and muscle memory, so does language acquisition. From physicality—where the sound starts in your mouth—to repeating phrases until they feel natural, the process is all about practice and persistence.

In this video, I explore the parallels between music and language learning, showing how breaking things down into small, repeatable segments leads to fluency. 🎵🗣️

Let’s practice together! What’s a phrase you’re working on? Drop it in the comments! 👇

  • G. Criticism Without Contribution

    💬 Constructive Feedback vs. Ego-Driven Criticism 💬

There’s a big difference between offering feedback to help someone grow and criticizing just to feel superior. This video is for two groups:

1️⃣ Learners: Keep going! Accept feedback but remember, not all criticism is accurate. Stay resilient. 💪

2️⃣ Critics who care: Your words have power. Are you helping or just tearing someone down? 🤔

We’re all beginners at some point. Mistakes are part of learning—don’t let negativity stop you! Develop thick skin like a shark 🦈 and push forward. 🚀

🌍 Learning a new language? Pursuing a new skill? Keep at it. Support others. Great leaders create leaders!

Love—Amor—Amour—Amore—Dragoste? 💘 Did you know the Romance languages aren’t named for their romantic allure but for their Roman roots? 🇮🇹🇫🇷🇪🇸🇵🇹🇷🇴
