Building a balanced team is a tricky proposition. We're limited by a number of factors that push us towards homogeneity, or in other words, having a team where people look pretty much the same.
When building a team, there is no recipe for the right balance – at least, not exactly. While a good chef may be able to cook without instruction, they still have a rough idea of what they want to come out of the oven.
Like cooking, team building is “both an art and a science,” and it’s certainly no small task. In fact, it requires a certain number of ingredients – a handful of this and a handful of that.
So in this episode we talk you through some of the key ingredients!

Much of an manager’s workday is spent asking others for information—requesting status updates from a team leader, for example, or questioning a counterpart in a tense negotiation. Yet unlike professionals such as litigators, journalists, and doctors, who are taught how to ask questions as an essential part of their training, few business owners think of questioning as a skill that can be honed—or consider how their own answers to questions could make conversations more productive.
That’s a missed opportunity.
So how do you ask better questions? We tell you in this episode!

Decision making is the process of making choices by identifying a decision, gathering information, and assessing alternative resolutions. Using a step-by-step decision-making process can help you make more deliberate, thoughtful decisions by organizing relevant information and denying alternatives. This approach increases the chances that you will choose the most satisfying alternative possible.
In this ep we cover the 7 step process to making an effective decision.

Striving to increase workplace diversity is not an empty slogan — it is a good business decision. A 2015 McKinsey report on 366 public companies found that those in the top quartile for ethnic and racial diversity in management were 35% more likely to have financial returns above their industry mean, and those in the top quartile for gender diversity were 15% more likely to have returns above the industry mean.
In this weeks episode we chat about the benefits and some of the challenges you may need to overcome to build your diverse team.

Last episode we spoke about effective meetings, but with a global pandemic we are running online/virtual meetings more than ever before.
It seems unlikely that we will ever fully return to a world where we only hold business meetings face-to-face, or where so many people work from offices in the centre of cities. We were already edging towards an understanding that not all business travel was necessary. This means, however, that knowing how to run and present at remote meetings and conferences has now become an essential skill.
In this ep we share with you how to run the most effective virtual meetings!

Meetings often get a bad rap as annoying interruptions to our “real” work. However, a well-run meeting can and should have quite the opposite effect. A great meeting should produce collaboration - a sense of dialogue and community among participants, clarification - new and useful information, and invigoration - a renewed energy for continuing activity after leaving the meeting.
In this ep we share with you how to run the most effective meeting!

Stepping into a leadership role doesn’t guarantee immediate respect from the team. Too often, new leaders take their new role and level of authority for granted. They assume their new position equals automatic trust and respect. Gaining trust and respect doesn’t happen overnight.
This ep takes you through how to be taken seriously as a new leader. We also dive into what its like to be a young new leader!
