ALL OF THIS IS TRUE

What is not true is the idea that just because you have a life and a life story you should tell it everywhere there is a stage. Not every audience is your audience. Not every stage is your stage.

LEAD WITH LISTENING

Just be certain you have done your homework and listened to the right people.

There are tons of people who possess wisdom. There are tons of people who possess education.

There are tons of people who possess passion.

There are tons of people who possess opinions.

There is also NO GUARANTEE you can trust them with the decisions you are required to make in your own life.

You need a multitude of counselors. You need to seek advice from a mentor or coach. You need to follow paths already blazed where the mistakes of others will save you time, money and pain. You also NEED to know who is speaking into your life for their own ego, their own reputation, their own success. You MUST discern ulterior motives. You must also be aware when an “advice giver” has no real agenda, they just feel like they have to speak up because they don’t know how or when to remain silent.

LEAD WITH HONOR FOR TIMING

We all have a sense of timing based on our own goals, ambitions and measurements of success. We have all suffered with the frustration of feeling like NOW IS THE TIME or maybe even questioning has MY TIME already passed?

Three things are needed for timing to occur in your leadership growth.

LEAD WITH A CLEAR NOTION OF WHO

If you know who you are, how you act will stem from that awareness. The words you choose to use, the places you go, the people you hang out with, the books you read will all be influenced by the WHO you recognize in the mirror.

I know this seems too simple a concept to be a leadership teaching. If you have not recognized the attack on identity from sexuality to culture to race to political party to faith then you are possibly living under a rock.

When you are clear as to who you are, others will not be easily able to tell you how to think, what to believe, who to agree with, how to vote, and where to give your time, talent, treasure and attention.

LEAD WITH FRIENDLINESS

It’s hard to be pleasant in unpleasant circumstances. It’s hard to be pleasant with unpleasant people. It’s nearly impossible to be pleasant when you find yourself in a difficult circumstance with difficult people.

However, the cliche carries some weight: “Its easier to catch flies with honey than with vinegar.”

When leaders choose to maintain control of their mood, their attitude and their demeanor without regard for the situation and circumstances their level of influence and impact grows exponentially.

You cannot control the circumstance, you can control how you react to them. Choose kindness, compassion and friendliness as a commitment to your leadership role.

I am a believer in inspiration in the truest form. Not imagination but inspiration. I firmly believe the Spirit of the Living God will speak directly to us and impart His Spirit in us to accomplish a greater purpose. I also believe His purpose is include of every human on earth. Every human of every generation, age and culture has a role in the purpose of God.

If I am right, then the purpose for which you were created is established and clear in the mind of God. If that is true, your purpose is knowable and doable and God has it all figured out... and God has it financed.

LEAD WITH THE COURAGE TO BE REAL

How hard do you work to hide your imperfections? Do you use make up to cover up the blemishes? Do you avoid certain growth situations out of fear of what they might reveal in you? Do you manipulate people and opportunities so you can always be perceived as the hero?

I have done all of these at some point in my life. I make an honest and intentional effort to redirect my focus and behavior when I become aware of it now. Being real is not easy. Sometimes real is flat out embarrassing. Sometimes real exposes weaknesses. Sometimes real tells a truth you wish no one knew. Sometimes real is risky.

Let me tell you something else about real. Real is refreshing, empowering, trust building, relationship strengthening and brings a hard won confidence.
