What is your core message?

What is your voice?

Who is in your target audience?

What solution will you offer which no one else has offered?

LEAD WITH VALUES BASED DECISIONS

Many people make decisions like a sailor checking the wind direction by wetting their finger and holding it in the air. Leaders should be more committed to the values they declare than to the “winds of change”.

The tenacity required to lead demands a ferocious dedication to values. Let me say it another way. Decide what you believe and sort out your priorities based on those beliefs then stick to every decision that aligns with those beliefs until one of two things happens.

1. You realize your belief and convictions were incorrect or inaccurate.

2. You lose the will to fight for what you believe.

Also realize at this point you may no longer be fit to lead.

Establish your core values. Lead from your core values. Make your priorities clear.

LEAD WITH PREDETERMINED CHOICES

There are moments in your life which you know will come eventually. You will one day have to decide “What type of car will I buy?” “Will I get married?” “Will we have a family together?” “How many children will we raise?” “What part of the world will we live in?”

These may seem like choices which are far off in the future. They may be choices you have already made. They may be choices you will never be allowed to make.

Choices you make today will determine the options you have for decision making later. Choosing the wrong friends, the wrong “fun” or the wrong education may limit your options or even remove them.

Plainly, if you are not under authority, you don’t have any. If you think you are top dog and answer to no one, you are delusional. If you think you run the show, call the shots, make every final decision and have no accountability you are set to self destruct mode.

Leaders must be willing and able to submit. BUT FIRST they must know to WHOM they must submit. Whose influence is that profound in your life? Who do you recognize as the one who could bring the whole thing down if you crossed them? Who do you seek advice from?

WHAT IS A REAL MAN?

I remember asking that question when I was about 13 or 14 years old. I was sitting on the tailgate of my uncle’s truck on a Saturday afternoon. His answer was “John Wayne, that’s a real man.”

I asked, “Does that mean a cowboy is a real man?”

How would you answer that question for a young boy today?

Could you point to the president, past or present, a football or basketball player, a Hollywood actor?

What is a real man? Is there a solid and reliable role model you could point to? What are the attributes of a real man? What are the traits of a real man? What are the markers of success for a real man?

Can you imagine how hard it must be for a young boy to determine the path to manhood given the examples before him?

LEADERS MUST INFLUENCE BY POSITIVE EXAMPLE - be a role model worth modeling.

LEAD BOYS TO BE MEN OF HONOR

We see it in decades old accusations from our past presidents and Hollywood producers to Supreme Court candidates. The behavior and standards of men with integrity have been lowered and ignored until we can only measure by the lowest common denominator.

We need men who honor their wives. Sons who honor their mothers. Brothers who honor their sisters. Boys who honor their girl friends and classmates.

Leaders must be willing to sacrifice their time, talent and treasure to develop the boys around them into men of integrity and honor.

LEAD WITH TIME AWAY - VACATION Everyone needs a little time away... Heart wrenching song from the 1980’s but a true sentiment and a direction given to us from our creator. Make sure you get away. Make sure you take time to rest, regroup and relax. Make sure you take time to think, imagine and re-envision. So. Today I will take my own advice. Karin and I are leaving for a “honeymoon” 24 years after the fact. A true vacation for the first time in our marriage, just the two of us.
