LEAD WITH ENOUGH CONCERN TO DISCIPLINE Many parents feel the double edge sword of discipline. If a moment of indiscretion which requires correction happens in public they fear the judgement and reprisal of those around them enough to refrain discipline. The cost of not disciplining the indiscretions can be very high. When someone feels like they “got away with it” they may well believe that is an acceptance or even endorsement of such behavior. Leaders must be willing to meet indiscretions head on and implement appropriate punishment to alter behavior. Leaders unwilling to do so will find consequences mounting. Do loud noises startle you or soothe you? Do you sleep with a particular noise to drown out other unfamiliar noises? Do you seek out the same foods? Do you hang with the same people? What have you learned to believe about you from your current environment? What if it all changed? LEAD YOU LEGACY WELL (your children) Parents are often blamed for the behavior of their children in public. When children are minors, they are the legal responsibility of their parents or guardians. Their actions may not bring rewards, but they will most certainly bring penalties or consequences. Watching how youth and teens behave in public with one another is a clear indication of how their parents engaged with them. What was important in conversation? What priorities were expressed and expected? Did they learn respect for authority? Did they learn compassion for others? Did they learn to appreciate the finer things of life?
