LEAD WITH TRUTH AND UNDERSTANDING As I listen to interviews with 18-35 year old citizens of the US, one thing strikes me as odd and somewhat disconcerting. That ONE THING is the randomness of their answers to tough questions. Those answers have two things in common: 1st, the definition of the words and phrases used seems ambiguous at best. It seems they are “well versed” in the use of the proper sound bites and provocative terminology until pressed to define the term or demonstrate how it would apply beyond rhetoric. 2nd, they seem to have a consistent vehement and nearly violent response to certain other words, terms or phrases which again have definitions in their minds which have never really applied anywhere else. Toast is toast. Bread is bread. 99.9% of the time, toast is bread before it’s toast. (That’s when TOAST is used as a noun and not a verb). MASCULINITY. CHIVALRY. HEROISM. LOYALTY. These have been good words for centuries. LEAD WITH RESONANCE Mirror neurons are powerful little devices inside the human brain which allow us to mimic others. When you understand the application of mirror neurons as a LEADER, you can lead responses subconsciously as you speak to your team, your clients or even yourself. Look at each answer and ask yourself honestly, is this a reason or an excuse. In my experience a reason is a control factor beyond your control. An excuse is a control factor you have not chosen to control. Your ability or inability is seldom the true factor in change.
