Leaning Toward Wisdom

Get your mirror out. You’re going to need it. Today’s show is based on the first lyric, “Sure is hard to remember life before you walked in the picture.” The second verse is very clever phrasing: I was messed up, wondering, broke down, stumbling Running for my life Was heartbroke, hard up, a long string […]

Leaning toward wisdom is about trying to improve our ability to make the best decisions in real-time. But it requires forethought. We can’t simply wake up in a new world every day and think we’ll do what’s best without having a preordained compass, convictions, objectives and more. Parents talk to their kids about various vices […]

It’s not the result. It’s the journey. The process. We hear it, but those of us struggling to achieve something – fighting to find success – often feel like those are the easy words to utter when you’re accomplished. I’ve heard many musicians make the claim that their pursuit of playing music was never focused […]

Words matter. Their meaning and context. “I’ve had it,” is a phrase everybody has uttered. Probably more times than we can possibly count. But even after we say it, we discover there’s more we can endure. I don’t think I’ve ever said that I’ve *almost* had enough though. Mostly, I’ve felt I was close to […]

January 2, 1978. Ft. Worth, Texas. After almost 3 years of dating. We got married. Neither of us was quite yet 21. But we were ready. I know so. Because this year we’re celebrating 40 years together as husband and wife. Our first date was July 2, 1975. We’ve been a couple ever since. It […]

Happy Friday. The final Friday of 2017. We’re saying goodbye to you. And to the foolishness you brought. Sure, you brought some wisdom with you, too. But we don’t ever say goodbye to wisdom. We accumulate it, pile it up and build higher wisdom on it. There are some words that I jotted down as […]

“It starts stopping when it stops stopping”…sings Ben Kweller. Another year is leaving because it can’t stay. Twelve months have passed bringing us to the expiration date of another year. What can’t stay goes away. Time. People. Situations. Stuff. Money. No exceptions! Some things can’t be stopped from coming to an end or going away. Last […]

So many different directions. Such a loaded question, right? For starters, so many different I’s to consider. Let’s broaden the scope of the conversation and think about all the people and the things that do figure in our life…and why. And let’s flip it around to think about the people who let us figure into […]

On Monday, December 4, 2017, I began another social media fast. I do this a few times a year. Every time I do this I get questions about why I’m doing it, what does it mean and all sorts of other surmisings. I’ve answered these questions many times before…but maybe not formally like this. For people […]

Leadership. Vision. Pursuit. Effort. These are the themes of today’s show. Another “free form” show where I hope to inspire you, provoke you and encourage you to move past your previous failures and fears and decide, maybe for the first time ever, to go marching into the woods where you’ve never been before. Where you […]
