• Ḥadīth 1 (continued): "…and every man shall have (in accordance) with what he intended" – Actions Are By Intention

• The intention is the intent and desire of the heart; its place is not on the tongue or the limbs

• Actions are only accepted, or valid, because of the intention: a general principle

• The intention is needed in doing the commands, avoiding the prohibitions and leaving the doubtful matters

• The intention distinguishes acts of worship from habits, and one act of worship from another

• Only ʿUmar narrated it from the Prophet ﷺ; it later became famous, with more than 200 narrating it

• One of the aḥādīth upon which the whole of Islām revolves; a third of all knowledge enters into it

• "Actions" covers the statements and actions of the heart, the speech of the tongue and the actions of the limbs

• Worldly actions such as eating and dressing need no intention; what is meant here are the righteous actions

• So a Muslim makes his intention sincerely for Allāh in every righteous action

• Why the Prophet ﷺ did not repeat the words for the one who migrated for the dunyā: to show how lowly that is
