Advanced Audio Blog S4 #14 - Top 10 Holidays in the United Kingdom - Halloween

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal ---- Trick or treat? Whoever chose the latter was going to be sorry.Decked out in macabre costumes, our gang of ghouls was on a mission to terrorise the neighborhood into giving us as much candy as possible.Dripping in fake red blood, plastic vampire teeth, witch's hats, and broomsticks, we looked as if we had just escaped from a horror movie. And armed with toilet paper rolls and eggs, we meant serious business. These are my childhood memories of Halloween. It was like a military operation; we would target the houses with the most decorations, and swap tips with other gangs of children. If jack-o'-lanterns glowered at the door, we were there. Our bags open and our faces contorted to the most devilish of grins. When the door opened we would raise our weapons and shout those three magic words. Most of the time we were spoilt for choice with chocolates, boiled sweets and candy in the shapes of monsters and small change, but occasionally we would get quite a different reception. Some of our neighbors positively hated Halloween. They would lock their children in their rooms, banning them from taking part."You should be ashamed, I won't have my children going from door to door like common beggars" they would shout, slamming the door in our faces, or threatening to call the police.Sometimes we would run away screaming, but if we felt brave and they had been particularly mean we would wait a while before our ringleader threw an egg at the front door, or we would decorate a tree outside their home in toilet paper. In all my years trick or treating I have to admit I never quite had the guts to throw an egg.Though I may have looked a fright, I was never a devil at heart, and was far more content at home, munching my way through the mountain of sweets I had accumulated and planning my costume for the following year. --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal English---- HOW TO INTERVIEW WHAT IS AN INTERVIEW? Do you want to learn more about a person or subject? A fun way to learn is to interview someone. An interview is a meeting where you ask questions. Interviews are easy and fun! WHO TO INTERVIEW Do you want to know a grandparent or neighbor better? Maybe you want to get to know your teacher or a friend. Most people are happy to share about their lives. QUESTIONS TO ASK Let’s say you want to learn about your grandpa. You can ask him questions about different times in his life. EARLY LIFE 1. What year were you born? 2. Where were you born? 3. Did you grow up in the city or country? 4. Did you have any pets? 5. What do you remember most from when you were my age? BECOMING A GROWN-UP 1. What was your job? 2. How did you meet Grandma? 3. How many different places have you lived? 4. Where did you go on your favorite vacation? NOW 1. How old are you now? 2. What are your favorite hobbies? 3. What are you most proud of? 4. What are three things you love about your life? Ask your grandpa to bring an old picture to tell you about. Also ask him to bring something about his life that will surprise you. WHAT TO BRING Get together with your grandpa for the interview if you can. It’s a good way to do the interview. Bring a notebook and a pencil to take notes. Remember to bring your list of questions! Also bring a camera and a way to record the interview. You’ll want to listen to it later. DURING THE INTERVIEW Be on time or a little early for the interview. Thank your grandpa for meeting with you. Ask for details to make the interview more interesting. Take lots of notes while your grandpa is talking. Speak up if you don’t understand something. Thank your grandpa again at the end of the interview. AFTER THE INTERVIEW Make more notes right after you get home. Then you will remember more about the interview. Listen to the recording again later to remember even more. Write your interview like a report. Share it with your family and friends. What did you learn from doing the interview? --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Extensive Reading in English for Intermediate Learners #7 - What’s In the Sky?

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal English---- WHAT’S IN THE SKY? OUT OF THIS WORLD Look up in the sky. Do you ever wonder what’s up there? Let’s find out! STARS On a clear night, you can see many stars. Stars are objects in space that are made of burning gases. Stars look small because they are very far away. The sun is a star. It is the only star we see during the day. Some groups of stars have names. They look like people or animals. THE MOON The moon is a big ball of rock. The moon looks like the biggest object in the night sky. It looks big because it is close to Earth. The moon does not make light. The moon looks bright because the sun shines on it. The sun only shines on half of the moon at a time. The other half of the moon is dark. The moon looks different at different times of the month. The moon moves around Earth. We see different parts of the moon’s bright side at different times. Sometimes the moon moves in front of the sun during the day. The moon blocks the sun’s rays. PLANETS Planets are big objects that move around a star. Earth is the planet we live on. We can see five planets in the night sky. They are Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn. The sun shines on half of Earth at a time. The other half is dark. Earth spins like a top. We have day and night because Earth spins. Earth moves around the sun. Earth makes one trip around the sun each year. The night sky looks different at different times of the year. COMETS AND SHOOTING STARS Comets are bits of dust and ice that move around the sun. Comets have long tails. Shooting stars fly through the night sky. Shooting stars are small space rocks that burn up as they fly toward Earth. If you blink, you will miss them! --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources!

Extensive Reading in English for Intermediate Learners #6 - Many Kinds of Leaves

Learn English with EnglishClass101! Don't forget to stop by EnglishClass101.com for more great English Language Learning Resources! -------Lesson Dialog------- ----Formal English---- MANY KINDS OF LEAVES MANY KINDS OF PLANTS Go outside and look around. What kinds of plants do you see? Trees, grass, and bushes are all plants. There are many different kinds of plants. Plants can be big or small. Their leaves can be wide or thin. Most plants make their own food. They make food from air, water, and sunlight. Things in the soil also help them make food. The green in their leaves helps, too! Plants grow in most places around the world. Plants are the right shape and size for the places where they grow. Different kinds of leaves help plants live in these places. DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT LEAVES Some plants grow in hot forests. Many of these plants have big, wide leaves. The leaves are big to take in lots of sunlight. Hot forests get a lot of rain. Some plants have leaves with pointed tips. Rain runs off the tips very fast. Then the plants do not get too wet. Some plants grow in hot deserts. Deserts are very dry places without much rain. Where are the leaves on this plant? The sharp spines are the plant’s leaves! Spines help desert plants save water. Many other plants in hot deserts have thick leaves. Thick leaves help desert plants save water, too. Some plants grow in cold forests. Many trees in cold forests have thin leaves. The leaves are called needles. Needles help these trees stay warm in winter. The needles help in another way, too. Snow falls off the needles fast. Then the branches do not get heavy and break. STRANGE LEAVES Some plants grow in poor soil. They cannot make enough food. The soil does not give them everything they need. The leaves of some plants are traps. These plants use their traps to catch small animals. They catch insects to eat. They may even catch small frogs! --------------------------- Learn English with EnglishClass101!
