We  have had some positive comments on the new video format. If you haven’t  watched the new video version of the podcast, you can watch on Spotify and YouTube.  We build the transcript into the videos, so you follow along as you  listen. It’s a more sophisticated version of closed captions. You don’t  need special software and we highlight each word as we speak it. It’s karaoke for language learners.

We  have had some minor issues with the dual recording of video and audio,  but mostly the move over to video and audio production has gone to plan.  Let us know about your experience. We aim to keep the same great audio  quality and English language learning content our podcast listeners  expect.

English language learners often struggle with the English grammar concept of conditionals. In this lesson, I’ll explain the 4 conditional types in a straightforward way, along with examples of each type and its use.  As a bonus, there is even a quiz at the end of the lesson to check you  have improved your understanding.

Given there are only 4 types of  conditional, you would think it is a pretty simple topic. Just learn the  4 types and it’s done. But as we often find in English grammar, the devil is in the detail. There are so many potential use cases for conditional types you can feel overwhelmed.

Talking about everyday topics, in a natural  conversation, is a great way for you to learn about life in the UK, a  little about me while you improve your English listening comprehension  and pronunciation skills. Training your brain to listen and understand spoken English is a critical part of making the move to speaking English.

If  you can listen and understand a conversation in real-time, without  translation. Then that will free up a lot more time for your brain to  plan and say what you need to say when it comes time to speak. We all  acquire language using listening skills,  the way you learned your first ‘native’ language as a baby. The better  you are at listening, the easier it will be to speak English.

A  quick note about our move to producing videos and audio podcasts. If you  are a regular listener and notice some changes in the audio quality as  we move over to video and audio production, don’t worry. I noticed them  as well. Having perfected the production process for audio only  podcasts, it’s been quite a learning experience to produce video. In this video podcast, I will explain idioms with the English word ‘leg’ in them. English idioms are an odd part of the English language, and not knowing about them can  catch English language learners out. The best way to deal with them is  to focus on the popular ones, the ones you are more likely to hear in an  everyday English conversation. Today I’m going to break each idiom down  into understandable parts and give you lots of examples. There is even a  quiz to test yourself at the end.

Behind the  scenes, we have started video recording our lessons at the same time as  we record the lesson audio. From a podcast listeners point of view, we  hope very little has changed, lots of great English language learning  content to listen to as you commute to work or go out jogging. For the  people who can watch us. The enormous advantage of video is we can build the transcript right into display and deliver more value to our audience.

We still think of ourselves as podcast first and video second. But we have to move with the times and our audience,  and one of our goals is to help as many people as possible learn to  speak English. Making our content available on new platforms for new  English learners has to include video. We are definitely learning as we  go along. English has some words which sound similar when you say them, and can even have the same spelling, but have a different meaning. Today we are going to talk about homonyms in our English grammar lesson, what they are, and why they are problematic for new English  language learners. The idea is to publish the same great English lesson you expect to listen to but also include video, and a better follow along transcription built into the video.  It’s a new process for us and there are a lot of technical changes to  getting the lesson published. English grammar doesn’t need to be boring! There are lots of interesting things to learn about homonyms. Listening to this podcast several times will help your store what you learn in your longer term language memory. We recommend you use spaced repetition as part of your listening process. So once you’ve finished listening to the podcast,  why not add a reminder with siri to play the podcast again in a few  days, then maybe a week’s time. The next time you listen, think about  what you didn’t remember, ask yourself why?

So  what is empathy? If you’re thinking, it sounds like an emotion, and  that’s correct. Empathy is the ability to understand and share in  another person’s feelings. If you want to connect with someone, see  something of yourself in them. You understand them on an emotional  level, and that’s called empathy.

Modal  verbs are everywhere! They are a big part of speech in the English  language. Frankly, in English we use them so much that after a while  they become invisible to us native speakers. Which is why we need to  make them visible again. That’s what today's English podcast is all about. Start learning English grammar the easy way, through listening.

If you are learning to speak English, you know modal verbs are an essential component of the structure of a language,  because they enable us to carry out actions or show our attitude  towards something. Something we will all want to do at some point in a  conversation. But it can be quite difficult to understand when you come  from another language.

So the  modal verb “could”, if used in conjunction with another verb, will  change the meaning of the sentence. For example, in the sentence “Billy  could eat like a horse,” the modal verb “could” is used alongside the  verb “eat” to change its meaning by implying that Billy has the  capability to eat a lot.

As always, the best way to learn this  type of verb modification is to hear them being used. So today we have  lots and lots of practice sentences which walk you through how modal  verbs can and should be used to bring your English conversations alive.

The  cost of living in the UK is going crazy. I’m sure it’s the same for  you. Petrol per litre has gone from £1.15 to £1.76. My food shopping was  about £100 a week for 3 people and 2 cats, now it’s about £145, for  nearly the same things. My gas bill has gone up 3 times, and it’s now  85% more expensive, but we’ve used less to keep the costs down. It’s  happening for everything though, my son’s computer chair broke (OK he  broke it!) I tried to buy the same chair on Amazon, and it was nearly  50% more, and it’s only a year old.

Talking in English about interesting topics is a great way to improve your English listening and comprehension skills.  Humans love a good story, and we have developed to keep this type of  “story” information in our longer term memory. The more relevant the  story to our survival, the more likely we are to store the information.  So our podcasts take advantage of this.

Music is a fantastic way to get new vocabulary into your brain.  It’s an easy way to improve your English vocabulary and fluency. You  will often hear us talk about repeat listening and spaced repetition as  the go to learning technique for improving your English language  comprehension. But we don’t talk as much about techniques for learning  English phrases and vocabulary. So in today’s English phrases and  vocabulary lesson, we are going to talk about things you can do to help you with remembering lists of common English words, like the days of the month, days of the week, etc.

If  you are new here, welcome! I’d like to mention that we have a principle  here in Adept English, a principle of only learning useful English. The  English you need to hold a fluent English conversation in the UK today.  We avoid using dry old English books with vocabulary and phrases you  just don’t hear being used in everyday English conversations.

We  are all busy people, and our time is precious. We want you to be  efficient and spend your English learning time as effectively as  possible. It’s why we have a course which helps you focus on the 500 most common English words, which make  up around 80% of all the words you would use in a conversation with just  about anyone right here in the UK today.

The point is, you learn  the vocabulary you need first and then move on to specialist vocabulary.  You don’t learn about English vocabulary for flying a plane if you’re  only ever going to work in a hotel or drive a taxi. You might want to  learn plane specific vocabulary eventually, but you would definitely  want to learn the 500 most common words first. And then learn hotel or  taxi specific vocabulary and then finally you're going to invest the  time in learning about planes.

Of  course, there are many wonderful British accents, and there are a lot  of lovely American accents as well. I’m going to give this lesson using  my accent. I would class my accent as contemporary received  pronunciation RP, which is just a way of saying I speak using an accent  you would hear in and around London and the South East of England.

My  accent is a clear and correctly spoken accent, so it’s a good place for  ESL (English as a second language) learners to start. It’s the sort of  accent you would want for your spoken English to be understood around  the world. If you want to sound Scottish or Welsh or Irish, or want one  of the many lovely regional accents to be found in the UK, then this  probably isn’t the lesson for you.

I know I say this a lot, but I think it’s important. Ultimately, having an accent when you speak English should not matter.  But accents, especially strong ones, can sometimes impede people  understanding what you say. As a new language learner, you probably  don’t want any additional barriers to being understood. You will  definitely adopt the accent from your English language teacher, and it  won’t be easy to correct later on. So knowing that should help you make a  more informed decision about what accent your language teacher has, and  whether that matters to you
