Fiestas Patrias

Cada año, en el mes de julio, el Perú entero se viste de rojo y blanco en alusión a los colores patrios para celebrar la declaración de la independencia del Perú (28 de julio de 1821).

Durante todo el mes de julio, las casas, establecimientos, colegios, universidades, instituciones públicas y privadas lucen la bandera peruana.

La celebración consta oficialmente de dos días, el 28 de julio se celebra en conmemoración a la declaración de la independencia por parte del Libertador don José de San Martín y el 29 de julio se celebra en honor a las Fuerzas Armadas y Policía Nacional del Perú.

La noche del 27 de julio suelen celebrarse serenatas de música folclórica y criolla en diversas plazas y parques. El amanecer del 28 es saludado con una salva de 21 cañonazos como preámbulo de la ceremonia del izamiento de la bandera. En la mañana de ese mismo día se celebra la misa y Te Deum, himno de agradecimiento a Dios, en la catedral de Lima. A la ceremonia asisten las personalidades más importantes del país, como el Presidente de la República. En el día 29 de julio se realiza la Gran Parada Militar en la que participan las Fuerzas Armadas del Perú y la Policía Nacional.

Asimismo, todos los 28 de julio, el Presidente de la República, en su calidad de Jefe de Estado debe rendirle cuentas al país con el mensaje del estado a la nación, respecto a lo que se ha avanzado hasta la fecha. Esta costumbre fue impuesta por el Libertador José de San Martín y ha continuado hasta la actualidad.

Peruvian National Holidays

Each year in July, all of Peru wears patriotic red and white in reference to the patriotic colors to celebrate Peru's Declaration of Independence (July 28, 1821).

Throughout the month of July, the houses, stores, schools, universities, and public and private institutions display the Peruvian flag.

The celebration officially consists of two days: July twenty-eighth commemorates the declaration of independence by the Liberator Jose de San Martin, and July twenty-ninth is celebrated in honor of the Armed Forces and Peru's National Police.

On the night of July twenty-seventh, serenades of Creole and folk music are held in various squares and parks. The dawn of the twenty-eighth is greeted with a twenty-one-cannon salute as a prelude to the flag-raising ceremony. On the morning of that day, the Mass and "Te Deum," a hymn of thanksgiving to God, are celebrated in the cathedral of Lima. The ceremony is attended by such national personalities as the President of the Republic. On July twenty-ninth is held a great military parade that involves Peru's Armed Forces and National Police.

Also, every July twenty-eighth, the President of the Republic, as head of state, must address the nation about what has been achieved to date. This custom was imposed by the Liberator Jose de San Martin and has continued to the present.
