Legacy Matters

Natalie is a published author and one of the first two women to have paddled from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. She also a great guest for a podcast!

We talk about some of her canoeing exploits and then we take a little left turn and talk about other aspects of her life, as is our custom on this random winding river of a show. Join us for the ride!

We do talk quite a bit about some of our favorite canoeing camps here Minnesota- Menogyn, Widjiwagan, Koochiching and Chippewa.

This week we had a visit with Tyler Moon. Tyler reached out to us about being on the show and of course we invited him in. Because we purposefully don’t do any research on our guests, we didn’t know what to expect. Tyler is such a warm and positive person that he won us over immediately!

Tyler is a supply chain worker at General Mills. Among other things, Tyler told us the story of very nearly dying in 2019 while running a 10k race here in Minneapolis. Obviously this event has shaped the course of his life. I really think you just need to listen to this show. We’ve invited Tyler back for a follow-up show in the future to find out how things are going with his life and his ministry.

Oh, and he wasn’t fibbing! Here are a bunch of links to articles about his experience.

Sam, Kate and Marc take a break from guests for a week and step back into The Comedy Corner Underground studio to discuss their busy summers and what is next for the show. We cover a wide range of topics, and begin our courting of legendary local artist Dave Witt, who happens to be a friend to two of our hosts. Easy prey, or so we hope!

Mercedes Austin of Mercury Mosaics in Minneapolis, MN, is joined in her studio by Sam for a conversation about new business ventures, tile mosaics and life in general. This is a very unique episode for Legacy Matters as we explore the possibility of spinning off a entrepreneurship centric version of the show.

Mercedes studio is filled with beauty. The wood, the tile and the art make you feel at home instantly.

This is a long episode with multiple breaks. The conversation is open and carefree, while staying focused on what it is like to pursue passions and take risks.

I love every show that we have recorded. Kate and Marc are the best people to have with me on this journey.

I asked a recent acquaintance to be a guest on the show and instead she suggested Dan. Dan Waldschmidt attempted to cleave a tree in half with his head when he was 20. He didn't wake up that morning thinking "I hate trees", but something bad happened. I have no doubt that everything that followed immediately was horrific. I also have no doubt that he and those who knew him wish that his accident never happened- but life is messy. Dan is Dan.

To make the most of your life and legacy is all there is. This show is another great example of why we record these stories and a tribute to the joy found in getting to know new people.

It was an absolute pleasure to meet you Dan! Wear a dang helmet!

This week Legacy Matters welcomes the multi-talented Dana Thompson to the show. You may know her from the critically acclaimed and award winning restaurant Owamni in Minneapolis, but did you know about her musical talents? And what does it mean to be an Indigenous kitchen? There is much more to Owamni than an incredible meal, all made possible thanks to Dana following her passions. Follow our conversation that takes us from the Arrowhead to Minneapolis, with a few stops in between.

This week we were joined by Christy Costello, who happens to be a good friend of Monica LaPlante, another past guest- a past guest we remembered to take a photo with after the show. Next time Christy! We cover all the basics: trains, hot air balloons and when they collide. From the Iron Range to Nordeast Minneapolis, follow along as we get to know one of our local musicians.

Mara Wack and Nate Lewis join us for a conversation. Mara and Nate have recently begun providing pollinator friendly landscaping services here in South Minneapolis through their company Blissful Bees. Mara, who holds some fancy dietician type degree that sounds suspicious, has a lot to say about healthy eating and healthy living. Nate throws in a few words from time to time as well. Enjoy the show!

Well, Kate couldn't make it this week so Marc and Sam were left unsupervised. Joe Hatch is the city administrator for Newport Minnesota. For the political type, we sure did have fun getting to know him better! Listen along and learn almost absolutely nothing in the process. Fun times!

Restaurants are Still Crazy!

Sometimes the Universe looks out for people. This week's guest is one of those people; Heather Asbury, proprietor of Heather's restaurant near Lake Nokomis in South Minneapolis. We enjoy a lot of food and drink talk with Heather in this episode. We also share experiences of working in the restaurant industry, and hear about the challenges she faced as a small business owner starting a business a week before covid breaks and shuts the world down! Spoiler alert- Heather's makes it!

Grab a snack- this episode will make you hungry.
