When Jesus celebrated Passover with His disciples the night before He was crucified, He did much more than just give a fresh look at an old practice. He gave a radially new way to understand God's previous work, and illustrate the glory of what He was about to accomplish in His death and resurrection.

Now, we don't look back to Egypt to remember God's salvation, we look to Christ as the true purpose of God's redemptive work. Instead of celebrating Passover, we celebrate the Lord's Supper remembering the broken body and shed blood of our Lord and King. The shed blood which was the blood of the new and better covenant. There is so much more to this familiar passage then most of us realize.

Passover was the central event of the first-century Jewish religious calendar. Jesus greatly desired to celebrate Passover with His disciples one final time just before His crucifixion. It was during that time where Jesus revealed that one of them would betray Him. We celebrated an important first at Legacy, the raising up of a new Elder. In this ordination message, Pastor Caleb reminds us of God's designed structure for the church, gives the new Elder a pastoral charge, and then gives the congregation as a whole a charge concerning their responsibilities to their pastors.

The Passover dominates the context of the latter half of Matthew 26. Within the setting of the Last Supper, we find the quintessential occurrence of an often misunderstood phenomenon in the betrayal of Judas Iscariot. God uses the sin of man to accomplish His good design, yet God is not the author of the sin. Even though God willed and used Judas’ sin, Judas was responsible and condemned for it.

Before trying to understand the Passover and the new understanding of it that Jesus gave in instituting the Lord’s Table, we take some time to explore the relationship between man’s responsibility and God’s sovereignty.

Sandwiched between two very different answers to the question of Jesus' worth is the reality that in this age there will always be people around us facing poverty. What was the disciples' attitude toward the poor, and what how should we treat them? After revealing how the rulers in Israel were plotting howthey could murder Jesus, Matthew gave us two examples that showed vary different responses to Jesus, so close to His crucifixion. The unnamed woman in the houseof Simon the Leper, and Judas Iscariot.

The unnamed woman’s actions proved that she knew, loved, and valued Jesus above any earthly possession. Her act of kindness is remembered throughout the centuries. Judas’ actions proved he saw Jesus only as a means to what was truly important to him. He is remembered as the definition of treachery and betrayal.

Just after completing the Olivet Discourse, Matthew pivotsback to the progressing events in the narrative of Holy Week. Only a couple days removed from the Triumphal Entry, and a couple days ahead of the crucifixion, Jesus one last time prepares His disciples for what He is about to endure. All thewhile, the leaders of Israel secretly scheme about how they kill Him.

At the end of the Olivet Discourse, Jesus warned His disciples about the universal judgment of mankind that would follow the Son of Man's return at the end of the age.

In Part 1, we focused on the reality of that coming judgment. Here in Part two, we looked at the evidence that will be used to make that judgment. We see that Jesus taught that the way we show that we love Him is by loving and serving one another within the body of Christ, the church.
