This is our first ‘official’ episode of 2016 and with this episode, we have a few changes that are happening with the show. As you already noticed, we have a new voice on the show and one missing. If you didn’t listen to last week’s episode, the combined episode with Hero Power, we talked about one of the major changes which is that Ariannwyn is going to take a step away from the show. As sad as that might be, we have someone new that is going to take over her spot.

Survey

We’re super excited about these changes because of what we heard from you, the listener. At the end of 2015 we hosted our very first Listener survey. I have to say we really got some great responses. I want to first say thank you to those of you who took a few minutes to answer the survey. The information you provided us will prove invaluable as we continue into 2016. It helps us better understand what you want to hear and how we can be helpful to the community.

Speaking of the survey, I want to just cover a few results from the survey that I thought were quite interesting. I’m not going to cover every question, since that would take up most of the show and I don’t think it would be all that entertaining.

Many of the questions were just your thoughts about how we can improve the website and the quality of various aspects of the show. I thought it was interesting that we scored really well in the content and hosts categories and not so good in the Video Quality scores (for the Twitch stream). I don’t blame you on this and we’re working to fix that but we have some physical limitations that we have to work around in the future. We’re at the mercy of our ISPs on that front. What I am also surprised by is that we got pretty good scores on Length of Episodes. Only 1 person gave us a poor rating on that.

I asked the following question. What do you like MOST about the podcast. For the most part, the answers were pretty much the same. Down to earth, easy to relate to, friendly, etc. Here are a few of the comments:

I love that you don’t go over the casual players head with a huge amount of “jargon”, and I’m actually able to learn things

I really enjoy the casual friendly and family atmosphere of the podcast. I really enjoy how you look out for us casual hearthstone players. Each person brings their own special touch to the show. I never miss an episode. Keep up the great work. Great job team.

Some great input and comments. I also asked the question, What do you like LEAST about the show. And we got some great responses. I also want to say I appreciate the honest comments. It helps us avoid the more painful parts of the show.

Some of the more common responses, were:

Talking about other games, Heroes of the Storm, WoW, etc.

Also numerous mentions about Ariannwyn  and how we should leave her alone and let her talk! Haha.

Here are a few more:

Tough question. Kind of like asking a parent who is their least favorite child. I’d like to hear more e-mails and calls on the show. I’m sure the reason you don’t have many is not many people send them in, but I think it would be nice to have a larger portion of the show devoted to this. I’m a big fan of The Instance podcast and Scott Johnson does a great job at involving his listeners. I’ve even had a couple of my e-mails and voicemails read on his show and it’s pretty exciting when that happen...

Espo with Highland Hunter:  At 4:22 I made a play that won me the game.  Never saw Reno. As with all Hunter matches, it was over “too soon Executus!”

Espo with One with Death:  At 5:19 you can clearly see that I click on Boom and out pops BGH.  Sad times, but I pulled it off in the end with Boom.

Espo with I got the Ooze:  At 12:00 I was forced to play Anyfin, knowing that it was going to get me a few minions on the board, but not allowing me to clear.  At 14:30 my man Tirion showed up to save the day.

In this brawl you must construct a deck from your own collection.

The gifts that he drops are 0/4 minions with the Deathrattle: Give the current player a stolen gift.  The gift is a 1 mana Stolen Winter’s Veil Gift spell that reads: Discover a random Treasure.  It’s cost is reduced.  The treasures are spells and cards from your opponent and your class, depending on which crate was destroyed.

Magical creatures are escaping from Tol Barad! Play a minion and get a random spell of the same cost, but for free!

This Brawl requires you to create your own deck from your collection.

Spells you gain can be from any class.

Decks Assemble!

Battle using premade decks, that use the discover mechanic to build a new deck as the Brawl continues!

So people are calling this week’s brawl a Deck Building one, and I guess I don’t really know what that term means cause I thought that’s what HS always was… anyway, here’s the rules:

You’ll start with a hand of 3 cards (or 4 cards, if second) and 4 cards in your deck. These cards are one of Tarnished Coin, Armor Plating, Whirling Blades or Chicken and can contain duplicates. Then, the Brawl follows a set pattern each turn.

* At the beginning of each turn you will get to Discover one card to add to your hand.

* Every card you play will be re-added into your deck.

* When you hit end turn, you will redraw 4 new cards from your deck, which could include cards you just played.

I guess a deck building game is a game where you build the deck DURING the game, which I’ve not played many games like that.

Third Wing: The Runied City of Stanglethorn

Sir Finley Mrrgglton, in Stranglethorn Jungle

The Naga capture Finley and you have to rescue him. Lord Slitherspear (30 health)

[Huge Toad] – 2 mana, 3 / 2 Beast, Deathrattle: Deal 1 damage to a random enemy.

[Gorillabot A-3] – 4 mana, 3 / 4 Mech, Battlecry: If you control another Mech, Discover a Mech.

[Dart Trap] – 2 mana, Secret: When an opposing Hero Power is used, deal 5 damage to a random enemy. (Hunter Secret)

Then you move to get the piece, Pearl of the Tides. Next you face, Giantfin (30 health)

This guy pilots the ultimate Murloc deck. (Great place for the Hungry Crab)

[Murloc Tinyfin] – 0 mana, 1/1 Murloc  – A Murloc Wisp!

[Everyfin is Awesome] – 7 mana, Give your minions +2/+2. Costs (1) less for each Murloc you control. (Shaman)

[Anyfin Can Happen] – 10 mana, Summon 7 Murlocs that died this game. (Paladin)  Yours OR your opponent’s Murlocs!!

Finally you face Lady Naz’jar – 30 Health

This gives you the last piece of the staff but it’s powerful enough by itself. She uses it to warp minions.

[Pit Snake] – 1 mana, 2/1 Beast, Destroy any minion damaged by this minion. (Rogue)

[Entomb] – 6 mana, Choose an enemy minion. Shuffle it into your deck. (Priest)  – Removes it from the battlefield!!

[Naga Sea Witch] – 5 mana, 5/5 minion, Your cards cost (5).  BB – Dr. Five! hehe

[Jungle Moonkin] – 4 mana, 4/4 Beast – Both players have Spell Damage +2 (Druid)

Then you get [Sir Finley Mrrgglton] – Legendary – 1 mana, 1 / 3 Murloc, Battlecry: Discover a new basic Hero Power.

In the latest patch there were some interesting tidbits related to some possible upcoming brawls. First were some references to a deckbuilding brawl where players grow their decks as they play. There were also 5 different images that leave all kinds of questions behind. Links to the images here:

Espo Mode

We finally get to see the treasure that was hidden away for the last 4 weeks!

This is a pre-constructed deck from hero of your choice.  You will then pilot a deck full of 2 mana 2 / 3 Pirates against another player.  Each turn you are shown 3 cards from the class you choose or the full neutral collection.

Second Wing: Uldaman

Brann Bronzebeard – League member who leads this part of the journey.

The first Trogg is Chieftain Scarvash – (30 health)

He pulses auroras that interrupt your abilities.

If you defeat him, you get:

[Tunnel Trogg] – 1 mana, 1/ 3 minion, Whenever you Overload, gain +1 Attack per locked Mana Crystal (Shaman)

[Ethereal Conjurer] – 5 mana, 6/3 minion, Battlecry: Discover a spell (Mage) NOTE: Discover is only Neutral or the Class cards.

[Mounted Raptor] – 3 mana, 3/2 Beast – Deathrattle: Summon a random 1-Cost minion. (Druid)

It’s a Class specific mini-Shredder

Next battle is unique. You hop into a mine cart to escape the Troggs to get into the center of Uldaman. Master the minecart. Cards like bombs, weaving left or right, or Barrel Forward (1 mana, Get 1 turn closer to the Exit!)

When you complete that you get:

[Tomb Spider] – 4 mana, 3/3 Beast, Battlecry: Discover a Beast. (Neutral or Class specific to what class you are playing)

[Unearthed Raptor] – 3 mana, 3/ 4 minion, Battlecry: Choose a friendly minion, Gain a copy of its Deathrattle effect. (Rogue)  – Can copy Sylvannas’s Deathrattle!

Then you face Archaedas – (30 health)

He summons a bunch of useless statues on both sides of the board.

[Fierce Monkey] – 3 mana, 3 / 4 Beast, Taunt (Warrior)

[Reliquary Seeker] – 1 mana, 1/1 minion, Battlecry: If you have 6 other minions, gain +4/+4 (Warlock)

[Keeper of Uldaman] – 4 mana, 3 / 4 minion, Battlecry: Set a minion’s Attack and Health to 3. (Paladin)

[Excavated Evil] – 5 mana, Deal 3 damage to all minions. Shuffle this card into your opponent’s deck. (Paladin)

Pre-made decks with cards from all expansions, including some fun cards that are only in these encounters. One change, Nefarian starts with only 4 mana instead of 5, which many believed was causing Nefarian to win more often than reasonable.

New Characters, New Locations

You are searching for the Staff of Origination. Elise Starseeker is leading the charge for finding this artifact.

You get the following two cards no matter how many wings you purchase.

[Explorer’s Hat] – Hunter. 2 mana, Give a minion +1/+1 and “Deathrattle: Add an Explorer’s Hat to your hand.”

[Forgotten Torch] – Mage. 3 mana, Deal 3 damage. Shuffle a ‘Roaring Torch’ into your deck that deals 6 damage.

[Roaring Torch] – Mage. 3 mana, Deal 6 damage.

Wing 1 – Temple of Orsis

The first piece is in the Temple of Orsis. Reno Jackson is the explorer going after this piece. New board, the Excavation board.

First thing, Reno grabs a lamp and that brings out a genie, Zinaar (30 health). Genie’s grant wishes, which he gives you throughout the battle.

[Jeweled Scarab] – Neutral. 2 mana, 1 / 1 Beast, Battlecry: Discover a (3) – Cost card.

When you defeat Zinaar, you earn the following card:

[Djinni of Zephyrs] – Neutral. 5 mana, 4/6 minion, Whenever you cast a spell on another friendly minion, cast a copy of it on this one.   (Ben Brode said when using Power Word: Shield on this minion, you get to draw twice. So this text casts the spell twice getting the casting benefits twice)

This card comes from one of the Warrior class challenge:

[Obsidian Destroyer] – 7 mana, 7/7 minion, At the end of your turn, summon a 1/1 Scarab with Taunt.  (Warrior Card) – Upgraded Hogger

If you make it to the treasure room, you will find the Rod of the Sun. Guarded by the Sun Raider Phaerix. (30 health)

Whoever holds it is immune to damage. And you can steal it from him.

You will earn these cards:  

[Anubisath Sentinel] – Neutral. 5 mana, 4/4 minion, Deathrattle: Give a random friendly minion +3/+3.

[Summoning Stone] – Neutral. 5 mana, 0/6 minion, Whenever you cast a spell, summon a random minion of the same Cost.

[Dark Peddler] – 2 mana, 2/2 minion, Battlecry: Discover a (1)-Cost card.  (Warlock) (BB said Warlock or Neutral card is drawn)

After you have the first piece, the temple falls apart and you enter a mission. No enemy hero but you have to survive long enough before the temple collapses. You have a number of turns to ‘escape’. If you survive, you get the following cards:

[Rumbling Elemental] – 4 mana, 2/6 minion, After you play a Battlecry minion, deal 2 damage to a random enemy.  (Shaman)

This week’s Brawl is the one we talked about last week, the Co-Op brawl! It’s awesome! Unite Against Mechazod! – Defeat the boss card Gearmaster Mechazod before he defeats either player. He swaps sides after each players turns and uses one of the following cards: Assassinate (Destroy an enemy minion), Bomb Salvo (Deal attack damage to up to 3 random targets), Overclock (Gain 2 Attack), Double Zap (Deal Attack damage to both players) and Kill the Lorewalker (Destroy Lorewalker Cho).

World Championship Tournament

Tournament starts on Friday at 11:45 am PST; Semi-finals on Saturday at 10:30 am PST; Finals at 2pm PST.

Challengestone

The Hearthstone Exhibition this year at Blizzcon on Friday is special edition of Challengestone. The participants, which will be some of the Hearthstone casters, will have to compete not only in gameplay, but also in timed deck building with an interesting twist. Players will build three decks of separate classes while adhering to a special rule (like you would have in Tavern Brawl (or affectionately known as Espo mode) in a limited amount of time.

[Deamonfuse]  – 2 mana spell, Give a Demon +3/+3. Give your opponent a Mana Crystal.

Negative: Gives a mana crystal to your opponent.

Not a whole lot of good to say about this card.

Recommendation: There are better cards to choose from. A lot of people feel like this is one of the worst cards in the game.

[Tiny Knight of Evil]  – 2 mana, Demon, Whenever you discard a card, gain +1/+1.

At first glance it looks like Blizzard is wanting to create a Discard Warlock.

Synergizes with [Fist of Jaraxxus]

Recommendation: This card is more of a card that makes some of the old card’s ‘discard’ drawback less of a problem. Might be more useful with future expansions?

[Wrathguard]  – 2 mana, 4 / 3 Demon, Whenever this minion takes damage, also deal that amount to your hero.

The best way to think about this card is similar to a [Zombie Chow] or a weapon. You will want to use it early in the game, if at all.

Recommendation: Be careful… mind your manners

[Dreadsteed]  – 4 mana, 1 / 1 Demon, Deathrattle: Summon a Dreadsteed.

The card’s flavor text is in reference to a Reddit user (Crescendo1909) who has been fighting cancer for the last year and thanked Hearthstone on YouTube. (https://www.reddit.com/r/hearthstone/comments/304vqp/thank_you_hearthstone_a_goodbye_from_a_passionate/)

Flavor text: Crescendo himself summoned this steed, riding it to victory in the Grand Tournament.  Wherever he rides, an army of riders ride behind him, supporting the legendary champion.

Combos well with: [Anima Golem] (6 mana, 9/9 Mech, At the end of each turn, destroy this minion if it’s your only one.); [Sacrificial Pact] (0 mana spell, Destroy a Demon. Restore 5 health to your hero.); [Demonfuse] (mentioned before); [Demonfire] (2 mana spell, Deal 2 damage to a minion. If it’s a friendly Demon, give it +2/+2 instead.); [Demonheart] (5 mana spell, Deal 5 damage to a minion. If it’s a friendly Demon, give it +5/+5 instead.)

Fill your board using [Baron Rivendare] (4 mana, Legendary 1/7 minion, Your minions trigger their Deathrattle twice.) and then play Malganis (9 mana, Legendary 9/7 minion, Your other Demons have +2/+2. Your hero is immune).

Recommendation: Can be lots of fun. It is susceptible to Silence, Polymorph and Earth Shock. However, it can cause problems by filling your board so that you can’t play other minions.
