Unfortunately, this did not happen. Due to overcrowding, dried up food sources, and the poor treatment of patients the Trans-Allegheny Lunatic Asylum became more of a torture den instead of the bright, open, and welcoming facility it was intended to be. Supposedly, there have been over 20,000 deaths that occurred within its walls. Some believe they belonged to the heroes of The Battle for the Alamo while other vehemently disagree. Did he truly become the monster the village believed him to be, a creature hellbent on terrorizing the local youths who used Holland Road as their Lovers Lane or was he simply a misunderstood man hiding from the prying eyes of a closed minded society? Samm shares her experiences growing up around this legend along with sharing her dad’s own experiences during a time when this legend was in the forefront of everyone’s mind.
