Leonardo DiCaprio's production company is backing a new biopic about Bela Lugosi, the Hungarian actor who famously portrayed Dracula in Universal's 1931 film.[1] The script is being written by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, known for their work on other biopics like Ed Wood (in which Martin Landau won an Oscar for playing an older Lugosi) and The People vs. Larry Flynt.[1] Lugosi, who also originated the role on Broadway, was not Universal's initial choice but was hired at a lower cost.[1] His performance as Dracula launched the Universal Monsters franchise, and his portrayal remains the definitive image of the character.[1] Despite his iconic role making him a household name, Lugosi became typecast and later took on supporting and Z-list roles.[1] He was buried in his Dracula cape upon his death in 1956.[1] This upcoming biopic aims to give him proper recognition for his significant contribution to Hollywood horror.[1]
