Il est déchiré entre Giovanni, un serveur dans un bar avec qu’il a un connextion romantique immédiat, et sa fiancée Hella qui explore l’Espagne pendant son séjour à Paris. Le livre est divisé entre la journée de l'exécution de Giovanni et les souvenirs de leurs moments ensemble avant ce journee triste.
