Hi pals,
We’re back with a one-on-one chat after our guest ep last week!
First up, some pop culture pregnancy popcorn. The youngest Kar-Jenner announces her second baby and we dive into all the tea from the John Mulaney/ Olivia Munn news. Why do we care so much about celebrity relationships?
Two musicians released album covers featuring pregnancy. Lil Nas X has been marketing his forthcoming album ‘Montero’ with a prosthetic bump while Drake used the pregnant emojis on his album ‘Certified Lover Boy’.
We ask if they’re using pregnancy as a gimmick and why it’s bad timing. It’s also important to note though, that white influencer James Charles used this stunt as well - was the same energy given then?
Next up, American production company CBS announced their new reality game show ‘The Activist’ this week. The dystopian Hunger Games-esque show will see activists paired with either Usher, Priyanka Chopra-Jones or Julianne Hough to battle it out before reaching the grand final of speaking in front of world leaders at the G20 Summit.
We read from activist Clover Hogan’s twitter thread on the behind the scenes experience, this i-D magazine article by Douglas Greenwood and we also reference this Guardian article by Arwa Mahdawi titled ‘The rise of performative activism has reached reality TV - but it’s not all bad’.
We have two recs each this week. Jas recommends ‘The Panic Years’ by After Work Drinks & ‘The Trap’ by The Victorian Women’s Trust.
Maggie recommends the ‘Everybody Knows’ podcast by Schwartz Media and Pete Davidson’s film ‘The King of Staten Island’.
Phew! Chat next week honeys.
