Ex Machina is a prime example of how bad it could go for us as human beings, if Artificial Intelligence were to be further created and developed. Technology is as flawed and corrupted as humans are, so the expectation for perfection would be met with harsh realities; as seen in this film. Alex Garland does an incredible job at creating an ominous tone with powerful questions being raised, through the means of such a simple and small story. One of A24's first films released, and I was happy to have had this experience in theaters. What an incredible film, serving as a massive BEWARE sign for future scientists and technology developers.

I found this movie to be relevant as this review is releasing exactly one week after the Tyre Nichols video came out. Police officers resembling gang members is not a new concept. Anton Fuqua showed us in 2001 with Denzel Washington's incredibly portrayal of an officer who "owns the streets". Using fear, intimidation, and deception to prey on the very citizens he vowed to protect. The director has a beautiful quote about Alonzo (Denzel) bending law an inch, and then bending it a foot, and then a yard; only to then find himself on the other side of the fence. Which is the clear slow fade of anything sliding into lawlessness. It's curated and learned behavior; over time. This movie shows us the result of allowing gang members to have police badges.

Joker is an incredible attempt at showing us the mental decline one person can have through trauma and neglect. Society does not want to claim its responsibility in the creation of an incel, or the creation of a homeless person; much less entire groups of them. Yet, society continues to wonder why school shootings are still occurring at the rate that they are. Guns do not kill people, only people do. Joker explores how transformative of an experience it can be for a person, to be exiled and ignored by society itself. This movie helps give voice to the voiceless.

The reasons each party has, driving their decision making in this movie, are reasons we can understand. Putting the audience in a heightened emotional space, as we want to see the cops and the robbers succeed at their job; but only one can win. This movie is so unique, and remains in my top 5 favorite movies of all time.
