Hi guys! Welcome back to my podcast! In today's episode, I'll explain how the timetable works in Italian. I'll teach you also how to ask for the time and the various expressions that you can use. I'll transcribe all the expressions you'll hear in the description of this episode, take a look! It will help you better understand today's topic. Have a good time listening!

If you need to know the time, you can ask “Che ora è?” or “Che ore sono?” (What time is it?), both forms are correct.

Instead, if you need to answer to these questions, you should use the expression “Sono le …” (It’s…)

For example:

h. 02:00 → Sono le 2 (It’s 2 o’clock)

h. 07:00  → Sono le 7 (It’s 7 o’clock)

The only exceptions where we need to use “È…“ are:

h. 01:00 → È l’una (It’s 1 o’clock)

h. 12:00 se usiamo l’espressione → È mezzogiorno (It’s midday)

h. 24:00 se usiamo l’espressione → È mezzanotte (It’s midnight)

Now, you have to know that in Italy there are two ways to tell the time:

1) 24 hours system

In this system, we use the numbers from 1 to 24 for hours, followed by the numbers from 1 to 60 for minutes.

For example:

h. 08:50 → Sono le 8 e 50 (It’s 8:50 a.m.)

h. 17:35 → Sono le 17 e 35 (It’s 5:35 p.m.)

h. 09: 15 → Sono le 9 e 15 (It’s 9:15 a.m.)

2) 12 hours system

In this system, we use the numbers from 1 to 12 for hours, followed by the numbers from 1 to 60 for minutes and then, if it is necessary to clarify, we add “di mattina”, “di pomeriggio”, “di sera” or “di notte” (in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening, in the night)

For example:

h. 16:20 → Sono le 4 e 20 di pomeriggio (It’s 4:20 in the afternoon)

h. 20:00 → Sono le 8 di sera (It’s 8 o’clock in the evening)

h. 03:00 → Sono le 3 di notte (It’s 3 o’clock in the night)

Let’s see some special cases:

h. 20:15

What time is it? It’s 8:15 p.m., that’s right! But you can also say that “Sono le 8 e un quarto (di sera)” (It’s a quarter past 8 in the evening)

h. 09:30

What time is it? It’s 9:30 a.m., but you can also say that “Sono le 9 e mezza (di mattina)” (It’s half past 9 in the morning)

Starting from 40 minutes, it is possible to tell the time in this way:

number of the following hour + “meno” (minus) + number of the minutes left to the following hour

For example:

h. 05:40 → Sono le 6 meno 20 (It’s 20 to 6 a.m.)

h. 10:45 → Sono le 11 meno un quarto (It’s a quarter to 11 a.m.)

h. 06:55 → Sono le 7 meno 5 (It’s 5 to 7 a.m.)

BE CAREFUL!

These expressions (“e un quarto”, “e mezza”, “meno”) are generally used only with the 12 hours system!

“Irregular” two digit numbers:

11 undici

12 dodici

14 quattordici

15 quindici

16 sedici

17 diciassette

18 diciotto

19 diciannove

Two digit numbers with zero:

10 dieci

20 venti

30 trenta

40 quaranta

50 cinquanta

60 sessanta

70 settanta

80 ottanta

90 novanta

In order to form all other numbers, that is "regular" two digit numbers, there is a kind of rule: you have to join "two digit numbers with zero" and the one digit numbers, by making a kind of "addition".

20+5 = venticinque (25)

40+7 = quarantasette (47)

60+9 = sessantanove (69)

70+4 = settantaquattro (74)

BE CAREFUL: the numbers one (1) and eight (8) start with a vowel, therefore, in order to join them with the “numeri con lo zero” (ending with a vowel), you should remember not to pronounce (nor write) the final vowel of the “number with zero”. Here you are some examples:

20+1 = ventuno (21)

30+8 = trentotto (38)

60+1 = sessantuno (61)

Three digit numbers with two zeros:

100 cento

200 duecento

300 trecento

400 quattrocento

500 cinquecento

600 seicento

700 settecento

800 ottocento

900 novecento

As you can see, except for the first one (one hundred), all other three digit numbers with two zeros are formed by joining the one digit number + cento. In order to form all other three digit numbers you will just do another “addition”. Here you are some examples:

100+50+4 = centocinquantaquattro (154)

300+20+5 = trecentoventicinque (325)

700+90+8 = settecentonovantotto (798)

To conclude, we have the four digit numbers with three zeros; in order to form them, you should just join the one digit number to the word “mila“, except for mille (1000). Here you are the list:

2000 duemila

3000 tremila

4000 quattromila

5000 cinquemila

6000 seimila

7000 settemila

8000 ottomila

9000 novemila

For all other four digit numbers, the “addition” rule is still valid:

1000+900+40+5 = millenovecentoquarantacinque (1945)

2000+18 = duemiladiciotto (2018)

5000+30+5 = cinquemilatrentacinque (5035)

The 6 meanings of “Sapere”:

Examples:

-Sai quanto costa un caffè in Italia? (Do you know how much a coffee costs in Italy?)

-Luca non sa a che ora parte il treno (Luca doesn't know what time the train leaves)

-Sapevate che noi non mangiamo carne? (Did you know we don't eat meat?)

-Ho saputo che ti sei sposato! Congratulazioni! (I heard you got married! Congratulations!)

-Hai saputo che c'è stato un terremoto? (Have you heard about the earthquake?)

-Marco, sai suonare il violino? (Marco, can you play the violin?)

-Maria sa parlare due lingue (Maria can speak two languages)

-Da piccolo sapevo memorizzare i testi di tutte le canzoni (When I was young I could memorize the lyrics of every song)

You should know that "Ecco" is a word that Italians use a lot in everyday conversations. For this reason, I decided to discuss this topic with you. During the episode you'll hear a lot of examples. The word “Ecco” can introduce the appearance of something or somebody.

Examples:

A: Hey! What are you doing here?

B: I’m waiting for my mother and my father!

[The parents appear]

A: Here are your parents! (“Ecco” i tuoi genitori!)

A: When does the train come?

[The train is coming, they see it]

B: Oh, here is the train! (Oh, “ecco” il treno!)

“Ecco” can be used also with the direct pronouns (mi, ti, lo, la, ci, vi, li, le), depending on which person or thing is appearing

Examples:

A: When are going to be here?

[B appears]

B: Here I am! (Eccomi!)

A: Where’s your dog?

B: Here it is, it’s behind you! (“Eccolo”, è dietro di te!)

Sometimes, the word “Ecco” is used to take time and think about what to say.

Example:

A: Can you give me a ride to the airport?

B: Well… actually, I don’t think I can… I have an important meeting… (“Well…” = “Ecco…”)

“Ecco” is used in some Italian expressions, such as:

- “Ecco perché”: means “that’s why”.

Example:

A: I’m so happy!

B: Why?

A: I won the lottery

B: Aaaah, that’s why (ecco perché)!

- “Ecco fatto”: means “I’ve finished”, “I’ve done what I had to do”.

Example:

A: Can you turn off the air conditioner?

[B turns it off]

B: Done! (Ecco fatto)!

- “Ecco cosa succede quando…”: means “these are the consequences when…”

Example:

A: I’ve been fired!

B: That’s what happens when you don’t work well! (Ecco cosa succede quando non si lavora bene!)

- “Ecco come…”: means “this is how…”

Example:

A: I can’t turn on my phone!

[B turns it on]

B: This is how you do it! (Ecco come si fa!)

Hi guys! Welcome back to my podcast! In today's episode, we’ll talk about how the word "Anzi" is used in Italian. In this episode, I’ll teach you the three main meanings of this word. “Anzi” has several meanings:

1. “Anzi” is used to contradict a negative sentence previously said. In this case it has the meaning of al contrario (on the contrary)

Example:

- Non fa freddo, anzi (= al contrario) ci sono 35 gradi! (It’s not cold, on the contrary, it’s 35 degrees!)

- Lucia non è brava a giocare a tennis, anzi (= al contrario) è proprio negata! (Lucia isn’t good at playing tennis, on the contrary, she is really bad!)

2. “Anzi” can also be used with the meaning of “piuttosto” (rather), when you change your mind (in this case, the other sentence must be negative!)

Example:

- Prendo una pizza, anzi, prendo una pasta! (I’ll have a pizza or, rather, a pasta)

3. “Anzi” can be also used to strengthen what said before, to insist on a notion, to give more emphasis!

Example:

- L’Italia è bella, anzi bellissima! (Italy is nice, no, actually it’s beautiful!)

- Sono arrabbiato, anzi adirato! (I’m angry, no, actually irate)

You need to know that the word “Anzi” can also be found in compound words such as: “Anzitutto” or “Innanzitutto” which are used to start a conversation or a list of things, in other words, they have the same meaning of prima di tutto (first of all).

Example:

- “Anzitutto” compriamo gli ingredienti, poi faremo una torta. (First of all we buy the ingredients, then we will make a cake)

“Anzi” can also be found in the word “Poc’anzi” that means poco fa (a while ago / earlier).

Example:

- Devo raccontarti quello che mi è successo “poc’anzi”! (I need to tell you what happened to me earlier)

Finally, we have “Anziché”, which means invece di and is used with the verb in the infinitive form, without prepositions. Usually it introduces an action that you don’t want to do!

Example:

- Preferisco comprare una casa nuova “anziché” affittarne una. (I’d rather buy a new house than renting one!)

1. "Allora" is often used in Italian just to introduce a sentence. It can be translated with "so" or "Right then" in English.

Example:

- Allora, adesso cominciamo la lezione (So, let's start the lesson)

- Allora, domani andiamo tutti a Firenze per visitare la città. (So, tomorrow we’re all going to Florence to visit the city)

2. It can be used to introduce the consequence of something.

Example:

- Fuori fa freddo, ALLORA prendo una giacca (It's cold outside, so I'll get a jacket)

3. The question "Allora?" is used to ask for more information about something.

Example:

- Allora? Come è andato il colloquio? (So? How did the interview go?)

4. "Allora" can also mean "Back then/At that time", referring to the past.

Example:

- Sono andato a San Francisco nel 1995. Allora viaggiavo tanto (I went to San Francisco in 1995. I used to travel a lot back then)

5. "Allora!!" is used to say "stop it!". I really don't like this expression, it sounds quite rude.

Example:

- If someone is annoying you for some reason, you can say: "Allora!!"

Superlative Absolute:

In the superlative absolute, the quality is at the highest possible degree, without any comparison.

How it is formed:

- With the suffix "… -issimo", "… -issima", "… -issimi", "… -issime"

- By putting "Molto …", "Assai …", "Decisamente …", "Estremamente …" before

- With prefixes like "arci- …", "super- …", "iper- …", "ultra- …"

Superlative Relative:

In the superlative relative, the quality is at the highest degree of majority and minority with respect to other things or people.

How it is formed:

– Majority:

Il più (adjective) … di / tra / fra (other things or people we’re making a comparison with)

– Minoranza:

Il meno (adjective) … di / tra / fra (other things or people we’re making a comparison with)

Examples of Absolute Superlative:

- Il fiore è bellissimo

- Il fiore è molto bello

- Il fiore è decisamente bello

- Il fiore è superbello

- Il fiore è extrabello

- Il fiore è ultrabello

Examples of Relative Superlative:

- Marco è il più alto del gruppo

- Marco è il meno alto tra gli amici

N.B.

Sometimes "Di", "Tra", "Fra" can be omitted!

For example:

Hanno scelto solo i giocatori più alti (s’intende tra i giocatori della squadra)

In today's episode, I want to talk about five expressions widely used in everyday conversations, they can be really useful for adding information to your sentences. All the five expressions that you'll hear contain the particle "CI" or the particle "NE". If you still don't know how to use "CI" and "NE", I suggest you to go back and listen the two episodes that I made in the past. They can be useful (Links in the description)! Expressions With “CI”:

- Ti ci abituerai

- Facci caso

- Mi ci trovo bene

Expressions With “NE”:

- Ne ho sentito parlare

- Non ne ho voglia

Examples With “CI”:

- È solo un mese che vivi qui, ti ci abituerai (You've only been living here for a month, you'll get used to it)

- Simona si comporta in modo diverso, facci caso la prossima volta che la vedi (Simona behaves differently, pay attention to her behavior next time you see her)

- I miei colleghi sono simpatici, mi ci trovo bene". (My colleagues are nice, we get along well)

- Ho acquistato un nuovo cellulare, mi ci trovo bene. (I bought a new phone, I like using it)

Examples With “NE”:

- Non ho visto quel film, ma ne ho sentito parlare (I haven't seen that film, but I've heard about it)

- Dovrei andare a fare la spesa, ma non ne ho voglia (I should go grocery shopping, but I don't want to)
