In this episode, Mark asks us to change our mindset surrounding problems and challenges in our lives. Instead of seeing these as bad times, Mark recommends turning things around and looking at it from a training perspective. Much in the way a professional athlete does.

Three things you can do today to change your mindset toward adversity:

    1. Intentionally challenge yourself more often
      1. Intermittent Fasting
      2. Convenience
      3. Exercise (physical/mental)
      1. Helps us endure
      2. Teaching moment
      3. Intentionality
    2. Practice gratitude
      1. Preparation
      2. Reminds us what we have accomplished
      3. Capability and capacity to overcome
    3. Connect with the times you overcame major challenges

"What you do is not nearly as important as you doing something."

"During recovery your body repairs and gains strength."

"What in my life was very challenging and how did that prepare me or improve my life?"

"You will struggle in life. Will you struggle with meaning or not?"

"We need challenge to push us and to grow."

  • LUYL 059: How to Balance Growth with Safety

Welcome to the Level Up Your Life podcast hosted by the awe-inspiring, motivating, and passionate Mark Black. As a double transplant survivor Mark has a very exclusive and different take on life. Mark is what all motivational speakers aspire to. He is kind, spirited, and animated with a pure and honest heart. When you listen to Mark speak you can't help but become excited. Mark cares about helping you get to the next level in all areas of life, work, home, mental, physical and emotional.

In this episode, Mark discusses the covid-19 pandemic and how you can deal effectively with it and the challenges it has created. It is all too easy to become overwhelmed when things like this happen, but Mark will help you think through the challenges with a level head and calm heart.

In this episode, we discuss how to strike a healthy balance between striving for continuous growth and improvement, with maintaining stability and safety, especially in challenging situations. In the episode we focus on three key strategies:

    1. Acceptance - It is impossible to move forward constructively until we are willing to face the current reality completely. Even if our current situation is difficult, even dire, until we face it head on, we have no hope of moving forward constructively.
    2. Adapt: New realities require new strategy and tactics. What worked before, may not work now. Goals you set previously may no longer be realistic, they may not even serve you anymore. Discover what works by being adaptable and trying new things.
    3. Thrive: Some people survive challenging times, others thrive through them. Without discounting very real constraints, the difference between these two groups is mostly their mindset. Do you choose to learn and make progress despite obstacles, or are you only in self-preservation mode?

  • LUYL 058 - The New SEO You Need Right Now

In this episode, we're talking about a new kind of SEO. You may be familiar with with Search Engine Optimization, but today we're talking about the SEO that will allow you to be your most effective during the covid-19 crisis: Sacrifice, Empathy, and Optimism.

    1. Sacrifice - While this word has taken on a lot of negative connotations in our convenience culture, sacrifice is really just giving up something for the sake of something else. When we make intentional sacrifice for something that is meaningful to us, not only is the sacrifice more meaningful, it is also easier to make. Can you re-frame the hardships you are enduring now, as sacrifices that are worth making for the sake of others?
    2. Empathy - One way to ensure that we know our sacrifice is meaningful, is to become more empathetic. While it is very easy to become selfish and self-focussed during times like these, if we become more empathetic, we will better connect with the pain that other are experiencing and be more willing to take action to help.
    3. Optimism - It is very easy to be negative right now. If you are struggling with depression and anxiety, please reach out for professional support. It is normal, and getting help can make a big difference. But if you are not clinically depressed, but just feeling down because of all of the negativity around you, take matters into your own hands. Nurture positivity. Fill your mind with information about what is going well right now. Seek out opportunities - they always exist in times of great change. We need optimistic people now more than ever before.

  • LUYL 057 Do These 5 Things to Take Advantage of the Quarantine

Welcome to the Level Up Your Life podcast hosted by the awe-inspiring, motivating, and passionate Mark Black. As a double transplant survivor Mark has a very exclusive and different take on life. Mark is what all motivational speakers aspire to. He is kind, spirited, and animated with a pure and honest heart. When you listen to Mark speak you can't help but become excited. Mark cares about helping you get to the next level in all areas of life, work, home, mental, physical and emotional.

In this episode, Mark discusses how to use the downtime that we have been given to prioritize the things that really matter so that we can come out of this hard time better than how we went into it.

    1. Time:
    • You are always saying "there aren't enough hours in the day". We all struggle to find time to do everything we want to get done. For most of us, we now have time we never had before. How can you use this time well?
    1. Relationships:
    • If you are stuck in the house with the people you care about most, you can drive each other crazy, or you can use the time to nurture relationships that you may have been neglecting. When else in your life will you have this much time to truly connect in meaningful ways with the most important people in your life?
    1. Goal-Time:
    • What if you spent the next several weeks (or months) focussed on accomplishing one specific goal. We can accomplish much more in bursts of focussed time, than we ever could using an hour here and there. What goal could you work on in the next few weeks that would make you a better person after this is over?
    1. Priorities
    • It is very rare that we have an opportunity to take a step-back and evaluate what matters most to us and whether we are living our lives according to our values, but this is just such a time. Take some time our to think about what really matters most to you and whether or not you are happy with where your life is going.
    1. Health
    • If you aren't doing it already, now is THE TIME to prioritize your health. If you never have time to exercise, now you do. If you struggle to get enough sleep, use this time to catch up. If you typically depend on the drive thru and take out, start cooking REAL food. This is great time to make time for your health.

In this episode, Mark provides 4 essential strategies for coping with the anxiety and worry caused by Covid-19.

    1. Worry Inventory
    • It's critical to articulate exactly what it is you are worried about so that you can deal with it effectively. When your worries are vague and unnamed, you can't hope to deal with them well.
    1. Rely on Habits and Routines
    • Humans are creatures of habit. We need our routines to keep us focussed and on track. If you don't have good habits and routines already, start to create and implement them now. They help relieve a lot of the unknowns in your life and give you a greater sense of direction and control.
    1. Diversion
    • This isn't about indulging in useless distraction or numbing out from reality, but rather using this tactic to break harmful habit loops.
    1. Aim
    • What do you want? Any goal is more easily achieved once you know specifically you want.

    • Assessing the Reality
      • With so many details and news stories, it can be a challenge to discern fact from fiction. You can't deal with any problem effectively until you know exactly what you are dealing with. Getting an unbiased, objective assessment of the situation is critical.
    • Accept what You Can't Control
      • In any situation, there are variables you control and those you don't. It's important to differentiate between the two and spend your valuable time and energy focused on the things you control.
    • Aim
      • What do you want? Any goal is more easily achieved once you know specifically you want.
    • Act
      • Situations like this cause overwhelm and analysis paralysis. The best remedy is to get out of your head and simply take some action. Almost any action will do. What's important is that you DO something.

Mark is what all motivational speakers aspire to. He is kind, spirited, and animated with a pure and honest heart. When you listen to Mark speak you can't help but become excited. Mark cares about helping you get to the next level in all areas of life, work, home, mental, physical and emotional.

So doesn't it then make sense that we work hard to be intentional with how you spend that fine resource? In this episode, Mark provides 4 powerful focusing questions to help you live more intentionally in every area of your life.

    • Who are you?
      • When you examine your skills, talents and abilities, what do you find? What are you good? What are you passionate about?
    • Who do you want to become?
      • We are always growing. There is no such thing as staying still. You are always "becoming" someone new. The question is, who do you want that person to be?
    • Where can you serve?
      • Who needs the skills and abilities you have?
      • Who do you have a passion to help?
      • Where can you make the biggest difference?
    • How do you want to be remembered?
    • Mark discusses the power of "beginning with the end in mind" when it comes to your life. When you remember that you will die someday it directs your choices and actions.
