Passion, Fear, Determination
In my first foray into the Contemporary Romantic Suspense genre I'm glad I chose Colleen Thompson. In Passion to Protect, this prolific author gives us not only sexual tension between past lovers, the courage and determination of a mother to protect her children from an abusive father, but a well-crafted visual sense of place, i.e. the California wilderness during a roaring forest fire.
After the breakup with her husband Mac who is sent to prison for embezzlement and for shooting her, Liane Mason and her two children return to her roots, the family lodge in the California back country. There she prays for closure and tranquility, but is stifled with a fear of intimacy and maintains a distance from Jake Whitaker, an ex firefighter and leg amputee who is living on the property and who has always loved her.
Unknown to Liane, her ex-husband Mac and several other escaped convicts arrive at the lodge to confiscate the money Mac has hidden there. Jake, in his need to protect the woman he loves, accompanies Liane into the raging forest inferno to find her father and children. Needless to say, there is a confrontation between all parties involved and we keep turning the page with the apprehension of who will live, who will die, and whether Liane and Jake will become lovers again.
Ms. Thompson's descriptions of Liane's fear for her family during the search, and her resolve to quash the attraction between her and Jake are both descriptive and emotional. The writer takes off running and never let's go of the suspense and electrifying conflict until the heart-stopping end. I highly recommend this satisfying book and will read more of Colleen Thompson's work.
3.5 stars, almost perfect, but.....
A suspense book that perhaps started with a little TOO much suspense? In the first few chapters we have 4 escaped convicts, an elderly man and two children wandering the same forest, an abusive ex-husband, a thunderstorm/windstorm, a forest fire, a child with asthma, a hero with a prosthetic leg.
HMMM... Little too over kill for me.
Then there is hikers who self-combust, and a heroine whom I really disliked. She is supposedly redeemed in the last few chapters of this book, but not enough for me. And the whole book revolves around her suffering, when hero's pain should have sparked some compassion in her.
Should have been great, but really was a letdown.
So real!
Colleen Thompson is an excellent writer. I have read three of here novels and this one tops my list. Once she introduced the two main characters you could understand the power and passion of each. One had a family and one wanted a family. However the real power of this novel was the way Colleen drew the reader into the fire on the mountain. I felt like I was there.
