On May 5, 2015, eMC will released their newest album "The Tonite Show". Prior to the completion of the album, I asked Masta Ace what we could expect from this album.

"It's about eMC being a musical guest on The Tonight Show..Comedian Russell Peters will be the host of the album...I can't wait for people to hear the album because they will really be blown away by it."

Divine Styler, has had an atypical 25 year career as an MC. Look at his discography and you'll see that even though he has only come out with 4 albums, each of his albums have had the goal of pushing the boundaries of what hip hop can, and should be. His newest album, Def Mask, came out late 2014 and is truly an incredible album. This week on The Library, Tim talks to the legendary MC about his latest album, Def Mask, why he continues to push the boundaries of hip-hop, and the affect dumbing down has had on the art form.

"All art should have certain components involved. There should be a component of design, organization, entertainment and thought," Legendary MC, Divine Styler tells Tim on The Library. He continues, “What is it saying? What is it telling you? How is it speaking to you? Regards to nowadays. There's this unspoken, unconscious rule that you got to dumb it all down and shit. Make it easy for people to absorb. I don't know where that myth came from but I think it's a killer, a threat to the creative process because there is an intellectual conversation to be had."

“In the early days there were no constraints. there were no boundaries.” Legendary MC, Divine Styler tells Tim on The Library. “We didn't know what we were doing; we were just having fun. No matter what expression of it you did, whether you were a DJ, whether you were a b-boy, it was just something you did.  It all came together and converged at some point and then it became this thing called hip-hop. But at that point, it was in a pure place of expression...It had no "I'm gonna..." on it. It's the honeymoon phase. And after the honeymoon phase, the marriage turns to shit...It feels like that is where we are now with the art form."

Styler: "I've never cared  from the beginning...And that's what the fun part is to me because I'm free, to a degree, in a lot of areas to actually exercise different things without the pressure of certain things....The biggest hit I took was with Spiral Walls because I was actually pushing boundaries and excited about pushing boundaries. But you learn quickly and specifically in Hip-Hop that is a no, no. you aren't supposed to push boundaries. you supposed to keep it pimping and you're supposed to keep it cocaine and all that other shit. For me, that just made me go deeper into doing my own thing."

This week on The Library, Tim talks to legendary MC Sadat X about his new album "Never Left", the disconnect between the younger hip-hop generation and the older hip-hop generation, labels setting up today's artists for short careers and what Sadat likes most about New York City.

"I think the way that they're doing it, especially with these younger kids they're setting it up for the one hit wonders." Sadat X, co-founding members of the legendary hip-hop group, Brand Nubian tells The Library's Tim Einenkel while discussing his new album "Never Left." Sadat X continued, "you see somebody like Bobby Shmurda unfortunately that is lock up now will probably be expendable to Epic after awhile. The way they got it set up now is that you fit the suit for this year and somebody fits the suit next year. Back then artists were groomed."

"I generally try to steer away from that (top 5) because I think that is away to narrow things too much." says veteran author and Hip Hop Historian Brian Coleman on The Library during their interview. Brian continues, " If I tell you my top 5, then you're not going to pay attention to people who are outside; numbers 6 or 7 or something like that. It's all hip-hop to me and I tend not to rank people....There are a lot of outlets out there that would rather do a list, then an article; and I don't ever want to feed into that because there is so much lazy journalism out there that it drives me insane. The good thing about that is it creates debate and lets fans be passionate. There is no real advantage to ranking MCs."

Brian continues, "I really do think they forget because the music industry is almost made to make people second guess themselves. Nobody in the music industry generally knows what the hell they are talking about. There's a select few people in the industry who actually, first, care about art verses just lets make a quick buck and secondly know what the hell they're talking about. "
