"I generally try to steer away from that (top 5) because I think that is away to narrow things too much." says veteran author and Hip Hop Historian Brian Coleman on The Library during their interview. Brian continues, " If I tell you my top 5, then you're not going to pay attention to people who are outside; numbers 6 or 7 or something like that. It's all hip-hop to me and I tend not to rank people....There are a lot of outlets out there that would rather do a list, then an article; and I don't ever want to feed into that because there is so much lazy journalism out there that it drives me insane. The good thing about that is it creates debate and lets fans be passionate. There is no real advantage to ranking MCs."

"When I can go back and help an artist re-access their own greatness, that means a lot to me," veteran author and Hip Hop Historian Brian Coleman tells Tim on The Library during their interview. Brian continues, "I really do think they forget because the music industry is almost made to make people second guess themselves. Nobody in the music industry generally knows what the hell they are talking about. There's a select few people in the industry who actually, first, care about art verses just lets make a quick buck and secondly know what the hell they're talking about. "

In 1992, Common debuted with his album “Can I borrow a Dollar?” The album didn't sell well which frustrated the Chicago MC. When asked by Tim on The Library if Common would have changed anything about the album, he said:

“It what it was because I was new and I hadn't developed as an artist yet...I wouldn't change it at all because that is what I was able to offer at the time...An artist changes, grows and evolves. I wouldn't go back and change anything”

When Masta Ace Incorporated came on the scene with their album SlaughtaHouse, promoters and some fans thought they were the new N.W.A. This was not the case. Even though the SlaughtaHouse single was a joke, Brian Coleman, author of "Check the Technique: Vol 2”, explains why he thinks this is one of the most underrated album of all time.

At the time Masta Ace created Masta Ace Incorporated it was purely based on financial reasons. I asked Brian Coleman, author of "Check the Technique: Vol 2”, whether this reason changed his opinion of what he thought of Masta Ace Incorporated:

"The stuff they were making was very dark, very murky. The SlaughtaHouse single is amazing. It's just so underrated because it is so over the top...people didn't get it...It was obviously a joke." Brian continued " I think it was a great move on Masta Ace's part because he's clearly since then gone back and forth...He just goes with just whatever he feels at the moment. I think that the group was great. I think that Slaughterhouse is as good, if not better then Take A Look Around which was a great record too. If anything it just increased his range to me and made me more impress. "

On The Library, Tim talks to veteran author and Hip Hop Historian Brian Coleman about his new book “Check the Technique: Vol 2: More Liner Notes For Hip-Hop Junkies." Boots Reily, front man of The Coup says after he completed the song “Breathing Apparatus” he almost gave up on music because everything seemed to be working against him. "He [Boots Reily] has had to fight much harder then most artists; just in the way that most labels have dealt with him. He's just has had real crappy luck early in his career. And it was not easy. Brian says. "Everything that could have happened to basically be like Boots just stop making music, this is not working for you. And he was like "Screw you. This is what I want to do. this is what I'm called to do."
