This Sunday, I am going to continue the Easter narrative by looking at the forgiveness and reinstating of Peter in John 21:15-25.  Jesus takes great pains to restore Peter after his previous betrayals. He does this by offering Peter space to truly repent and receive grace and by affirming Peter’s call to being a disciple and leader of God’s people.  My hope is that this message will instruct us on how to be healed by Jesus as we suffer from the regret and shame of past mistakes that keep us from being who we are called to be in Christ.

Our text is John 20:6-7, looking at the empty burial clothes, and their reinforcement of Jesus’ declaration from the cross that “It is finished!” After death has been defanged, what else is left?  Christ is victorious over death, and our victory is in him.

I love the impromptu series we're doing dealing with Crisis. It's been so fruitful & such a good reminder. I am continuing the theme of crisis, by looking at Hebrews 10:19-25. Except that we now we shift our focus out. How do we as a church persevere together in the midst of a crisis? The author of Hebrews gives us 4 practices which help us accomplish that: Hold on to hope, spur each other on toward love & good deeds, continue to meet, & encourage each other.

This week we are in Heb 12:27-13:8.  What do we do when our world is shaking?  Hebrews tells us that we hold onto what cannot be shaken.  This passage gets super practical into what loving God and neighbor looks like in the midst of a world that feels unsteady.

This week we are looking at Jesus’ teaching on worry in Mt 6:25-34.  Here he teaches that those who follow him don’t need to worry about their needs not being met, because the Father loves them, and he knows what they need.  Instead of clamoring after stuff or worrying about tomorrow, we should seek God first, and trust that he will provide the rest.

Jonah runs from God in part because he doesn’t share God’s heart for the Ninevites. Why is that? Part of the answer is that Jonah’s identity is wrongly ordered. He places his ethnic and national identity above his primary identity: that he is a deeply loved child of God, made in his image. When we place other aspects of who we are – even important aspects of who we are – above our identity as God’s child, we find it distorts how we see God, ourselves, and others.

Contrary to what you may have learned in Sunday School, the book of Jonah is not primarily about a man swallowed by a whale. It’s about running from God, and being angry with God, and, and eventually, learning from God how to be a person of grace. This week we will be in Jonah 1:1-17 (http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Jonah+1%3A1-17&version=72), talking about running from God, and how even when we do so, God in his mercy pursues us.

This week we wrap up our vision and values series with a teaching on how to be a spiritual friend. If we are going to be men and women who grow as disciples, and particularly if we are going to strengthen our commitment to evangelism and to Scripture, we aren’t going to be able to do it alone. So how do we go about being the kind of believers who can help others and be helped on the journey?

This week we have a guest speaker, Dr. Christine Aroney-Sine, teaching on “The Gift of Wonder”, and she will be instructing us on how to come to God in awe and wonder.
