What do Taekwondo and dance have in common? And why might practicing both be valuable for our physical, energetic, and personal development?
In this episode, a Jungbub practitioner describes the joy and renewed energy she experiences while learning Taekwondo and dance. Sensing a harmony of yin and yang between the two practices, she asks Seuseungnim to explain their deeper connection.
Seuseungnim explains that Taekwondo was originally more than a sport. Its foundation lies in Mu-Do, the path of martial discipline, and he describes Hongik Taekwondo as a practice for developing physical strength, regulating the flow of energy, calming oneself, and preparing Hongikingans for their future responsibilities.
Dance serves a different but complementary purpose. Through movement, the body relaxes and energy begins to flow more freely. Seuseungnim explains that accumulated knowledge and the pressures of life can make us physically and spiritually rigid, while dance gives us an opportunity to loosen that rigidity and express ourselves more naturally.
He emphasizes that we do not need to become professional dancers or Taekwondo experts. The purpose is to move, enjoy ourselves, strengthen the body, release stagnant energy, and restore a more harmonious flow within ourselves. Other energy practices, including Qi Gong, can then build upon this foundation.
This teaching presents Taekwondo and dance not simply as exercise, but as complementary ways of preparing the body and spirit: Taekwondo develops strength and discipline, while dance helps us loosen, flow, and rediscover joy.
