  • Quest for Truth 45 Myths On Bible Myths.
    Fpor our Meet the Hosts segment, we take time to meet our guest. Its up to Keith to share how they first met, since the guest is his son, Michael, and he claims to not remember a thing about it. It has been a mostly un remarkable week for the hosts, so after a quick shout out on other podcasting projects and a word on support through patreon.com, we turn to a new segment.
    Bible Timelines.
    This is intended to support the bible as a valid, true , and reliable resource to base matters of faith. A majority of people regard the bible as a good book at the very least. Over half take it as being inspired by God, even if there is som disagreement on whether it should be held as the literal word of God, or as a helpful tool for life, or some other positive beliefs about it.
    Today we take a first glimpse at how we got to having so many versions of scripture in the English language. What are the translations based on? Arre all the Greek manuscripts equal? Which are considered trustworthy, and why? For that matter, hlw can we trust that those old, dusty parchments and fragments can be considered reliable?
    So… is the good old King James Version the only real version? I don’t think there’s a definitive answer to that, especially not in this initial segment. Stay tuned to more on the time line that has preserved and delivered the familiar translations that we have today. In upcoming installments wetry to tackle such topics as considering the scripture as a product of men, or of god. Is it full of errors , or is it possible for perfection to come out of imperfect mehn. Plus much more. Feel free to drop us a line to let your voice be heard, or weigh in on a topic.
    Main Topic.
    oes the bible contain myths? Does it teach negative behavior that is counter productive? Some people think so. We take some foundational… or would that be better stated as fundamental… beliefs of Secular Humanists. Pulling statements directly from an article from a Humanist website, we try to make sense of their claims that it is corrupt, full of myths, and has only negative impact on society.
    We can’t figure out the logic of the statements they claim. It is only clear to us that the humanist who wrote the article has never read the bible.
    Claims of contradictions seem to be based on rumors of what the bible teaches. You know… “They” say the creation account conflicts with… Or, “they” say the bible teaches bigotry… oor “they” say… (fill in the false teaching here). Who is “They”? Bibles are everywhere. Why not pick up a copy, and read what it actually says, rather than what you heard a friend say about what he heard someone else say, who got it from a friend of a friend… Sorry for being a little flippant, but groundless claims need to be supported. It’s never good to build a doctrine on heresay.
    This topic, Myths About the Bible, will also be a recurring segment for future episodes. Please feel free to weigh in on the topic. We have a list of faulty ideas that people have. If you have a burning question that you want us to discuss , leave a comment or email, and tell us all about it.
    The plan was to include more Christmas trivia questions, but the discussion ran ,long. We still have next week so stay tuned to enjoy it then.

  • Quest for Truth 44 Christmas
    In meeting the hosts, we talk about Nathan’s recent appearance on the Alive and Still Married podcast. We somehow end up on a ide track on technical stuff, and some possible guest hosts.
    Nathan brings up the Retro Radio Podcast,the podcast that Keith does that isn’t Christian based. We talk about some of the bloopers, and inuendo’s that sometimes make it into the old shows. Also some of the words that have meanings that have shifted, and other social slips.
    Main Topic
    Based on Luke 2, Nathan -resents a slightly different view on the traditional story of the birth of Jesus. Some of the concepts of the story can be hard to understand. We’re not here to convince you whether the virgin birth is real, or that Jesus was god in the flesh. The main thing we can hope to do is to share what the bible teaches, and it teaches that a virgin bolre a son, who was and named him Jesus.
    Moving on to Matthew 2, and the account of the arrival of the wisemen, Nathan points out how they went out of their way to worship the new born king. Sometimes we want the truth, and may even have it in our hand, but don’t recognize it or its value until too late. Nathan also points out how Jesus is seeking for us. Our search for him isn’t as difficult as we make it. All these events were prophesied, and the time had become right to have god come to earth, to seek us out, and deliver salvation to the world.
    It may b a bunny trail, but we talk about having the faith to be willing to die four our faith.
    Before wrapping up, we share some Christmas related trivia. How well will you do in this list of general trivia knowlee of movies, music, poetry, traditions, and a couple of bible based questions?

  • Quest for Truth 43 Bible Study: Adam To Noah
    In approaching a topic that often gets overloooked, Keith presents a solo episode to see what we can learn from little more than a list of names.
    The account of Adam.
    Adam, or mankind, was made in the image of God, and in male and female forms. Named man by God on the day of their creation, this lineage that connects to Noah is given.

    * Man, or Adam: red, blushing.
    * Adam: 130. Seth, Substitute, is born.
    * Adam: 235 Seth: 105 Enos, Frail man, is born.

  • Quest for Truth 42 Battling Depression, with James Kennison
    Picking up where we left off last time, we talk abut bad pastors. Not evil, just flawed… like anybody else.
    James talks about his journey from rural Georgia to his pastorate. His calling, training, mentor, and steps along the way. In following his mentor to Kansas City, MO he worked in the inner city in bus ministry, puppets, and with the kids in the neighborhood. Obedience, trust, prayer, and patience to be where you need to be when God wats you there.
    The message to be learned is that James is a regular guy, just like you or me. Being a pastor holds no immunity to what the world throws at us. In our quiz of the previous episode we talked about biblical myths. If we didn’t touch much on it in our hangout with James, we go deeper into some of the fake things christians practice in their religious worship.
    James has spent the past few years in a spiral into depression. He’s slowly climbing back out of it, with plenty of steps backward to seemingly match his progress. The journey isn’t easy, and we learn what has help James through, to the point he is today. Faith is important, so is getting medical attention. Sometimes there are no easy answers, but to keep on anvhoring yourself to the promises of God.
    Enjoy the rest of our hangout with James. I hope it will be encvouraging to those who are either suffering from depression, or a loved one of someone who is.

  • Quest for Truth 41 Real or Fake Religion, With James Kennison
    We have a special guest today. James Kennison of That Story Show, the clean comedy podcast where he reads your funny life stories. Find all the work he has done in the world of podcasting at: NLCast.com
    We get off to a rough start with interrupting phone calls, and a Skype malfunction. This was a long recording session, so portions of our interview with James will come in a later installment.
    We substitute our Meet the Hosts segment for a quiz. It still counts as meeting the hosts, since through the questions that Nathan put together, you get to know the hosts a little better.
    Bible Truth or Myth. James and Keith answer the questions then we discuss each question in ore detail to examine the truth, and the truth that counter the myths.

    * Is there any guarantees that children will never leave the faith they were raised in?
    * Is the King James the only version we need to be reading? (This could be a topic we could return to to do an entire show about). We spend a little time talking about versions that leave verses out, the reading level of the scriptures, preservation of the texts that translations are derived from, to include a few subtopics we talk about.
    * Can we be sure of eternal salvation? Or is it a matter of, “Once saved always saved”? We talk a little about the topic of unforgivable sin. How does that work? James summarizes the concept pretty well.
    Is the unforgivable sin of rejecting the holy spirit only for the unbeliever, or can a believer somehow reject the holy spirits gift of faith? Definitely a topic deeper than we have time to give it here.
    * Will God give you anything you ask for, just because you ask for it?
    * Will following the convictions of your heart get you into heaven?

    Our hangout with James ran long, but listen to some of his testimony, and get an introduction to who he is.
    Be sure to stay tuned for the rest of our day with James. He has plenty to say on the topic of christians acting bad, and the fake things that can mislead people from the real value they imitate. He’s also a person who is recovering from depression. It’s an ongoing problem, but he’ll share a little on how he has been dealing with it.

  • Quest for Truth 40 Bible Survey 3: Ten Commandments.
    Getting started we talk a little about the use of our official hash tags on twitter. For example a quick topic tattoos. And a possible bomb threat from Jill… not really.
    In meeting the hosts, we shift gears and mention some of the things we’ve heard people talking about over the past week. In particular, whether it’s failure to have doubts. Can you still be considered a follower of God, or someone who loves God, if you doubt?
    Actually doubting is good. It’s one way you know you’re growing, and thinking outside the box of teachings that were pressed on you when you first believed. Challenging what you know can bring assurance that its true. It’s a sign you’re seeking the truth about God, and what the bible teaches. Don’t take someone’s word for it, not even mine, take the time to find answers for yourself about God, inside his word. Learn it on your own, and you’ll own it for yourself.
    Would you try to learn about astronomy by reading a cook book? Or gardening by reading a book on arithmetic? Don’t expect to find out about God from the culture, or in a science book, open his word. a good beginning place to look for evidence of a supernatural creator is in nature itself. From that launching spot, joining together with fellow worshippers, and doing some firsthand experiencing of God to share what you’ve learned and support each other is another good step.
    As we talk about the problem of global warming, it may seem like one of our typical bunny trails, its a way of expanding on seeing God in nature. The globe is a lot more durable than we sometimes give it credit for being. As far back as the account of Noah, we have the promise from God that the seasons will never end until the end of the age. And only God holds the control of when the end of the age comes, not a self destructive people who live here. He sealed that covenant with the rainbow. A sign of that enduring hope… not an emblem of homosexuality.
    Main Topic
    The ten commandments are pivotal, and basic teachings/. They cover two categories of rules to follow. Jesus even boiled them down to just two commandments.

    The Great Commandment
    Matthew 22:34 But when the Pharisees heard that he had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. 35 And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question to test him. 36 “Teacher, which is the great commandment in the Law?” 37 And he said to him, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. 38 This is the great and first commandment. 39 And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. 40 On these two commandments depend all the Law and the Prophets.”
    (ESV)

    In Exodus 20, the commandments are given as God spoke them to Moses. Though we read through them, the point we want to focus on is grace. Is grace separate from the law, or is there grace in the law? How can they both exist and be observed, without being at odds with each other?
    As God gave the commandments, he began by emphasizing who he was, Yahweh (the self existing, or living and breathing one), and what he had done for his people lately. These ten commandments are the foundation of all the rest of the commandments in the Old Testament.
    The first five commandments deal with giving honor to God.

    * No other Gods. God
    * No idols.
    * Don’t use God’s name in vain.
    * Remember the Sabbath.
    Do you wand to show love towards God? Follow the above commands. He will judge over whether you follow them, or to the degree you follow them. There is no justification for not keeping them.
    * Honor parents.
    * Don’t kill.

    ratsach –
    Hebrew. a primitive root; properly, to dash in pieces, i.e. kill
    — Strongs Greek and Hebrew Dictionary.
    kill –
    English. verb.

    Keith tells about the history of critter activity in the Church House. The latest fun involves birds, and snakes Maybe we ought to re-christen the place, Critter Castle. If
    We also discuss movies, and whether they are generally accessible, or easy to follow for a blind person. Spectacular visuals, action, and sight gags don’t work so well without audio descriptive tracks. Too bad there can’t be a one button press to click description on and off. Other technology we mention that can give trouble for blind people, is the weird way Siri works on the iPhone.
    Main Topic.
    With Halloween being this week, we jump on the bandwagon of other Christian based podcasts to talk about it. To make it less topical, we spread it out to a general discussion of other religious holidays. All seem to have elements of pagan roots, that are cleaned up for Christianity.
    After a trip down a short bunny trail, we get back to recommending ways to keep the holiday fun. There’s nothing wrong with the move to harvest parties, and trunk or treat, in that they keep the fun in the celebration, and try to keep kids safe.
    We share a few shoot from the hip reactions to our own feelings about Halloween, and other holidays. Basically, for us its all about the candy… or the presents… or the food… hey, I think I detect a theme here. Keith has a little background on the modern custom of Trick or Treat. It’s a lot more modern, and less sinister than some people might think.
    Granted, pagan customs can be pointed to as the core, but over the past hundred years, things have been greatly refined to make the holiday kid friendly. And the direction is to continue to make customs even more friendly with such things as Trunk or Treat.
    Halloween, like other holidays has a blend of Christianity with old pagan activities, and some blend together better than others. The religious component to Halloween, or All Hallows Eve, is to honor the saints who have gone on to heaven, and are no longer with us. A memorial service of sorts. The pagan activities seem to be where the fun part of holidays comes from, no matter if its Halloween, or Easter, or Christmas.
    We’re all for celebrations and fun, and if a person can take the fun activity, and put the honor and glory towards God, then its a good thing.
    We point to Colossians 2:16 as a precedent that it’s the attitude in the heart that matters. A holiday, or any day holds teachable moments. Can everything be dressed up, and made honorable to God? Can there be teaching moments, or enactments of principles of what faith is all about? Certainly, some holidays fit better, and blend together well.
    A holiday like Easter is clearly Christian, but other pagan celebrations coincidently exist. The boundary only blurs when we don’t keep them separate.
    After short hop down a bunny trail, we get back on track with a final word on support for keeping holidays fun. Customs keep evolving, and made safer for kids.

  • Quest foor Truth 38 What Gives God the Right
    In meeting the hosts, we answer the burning question from a listener. How did the hosts meet? Short answer… online, but for a more detailed recollections of events that led to an interview, and the conception for the podcast, be sure to listen in.
    Bunny Trail Alert: We get side tracked on the thing tht every non-techie is just dieing to know… SEO, Search Engine Optimization. Also a little on Keith’s blog.
    Main Topic
    We have two questions that were gleaned from recent days of life on the web. What gives God the right to decide who gets into heaven? Simple answer: God created it all, he gets to write the rules. More complex answer, think of the model of a business owner. He thought of the concept for his business. He wants the public to benefit from being in his store. The owner may not always appear in the store, he may be tending to other interests. But if people come in, and are disruptive, why wouldn’t the owner have the right to kick them ?
    It brings up the side topic of justice. If all people get to be in heaven because God is loving, what about someone who is in need of punishment/ Where is the line drawn? If you get in because you’re better than Hitler, then will Hitler get in because he was better than Gengis Kahn? Where is the line of badness drawn? We claim that sin is digitql. You’ve sinned, or you haven/t. The degree of sin doesn’t matter. One is as good as a thousand.
    Question two: How can we know the names of people on books, wrote those books?
    The books in the bible were held to be authentic for centuries, and from a time wen the leaders of both the Jewish and Christian religions were closer in time to when the books were written, or even letters that were circulated from the apostles during their tie on eqrth. New Testament letters and gospels point to the old testament writings as authentic.
    To put a point on it, the label of the book is given from tradition,. If tradition is wrong, it only proves the label is incorrect. The important thing is the message in the book. How does that message hold up against the rest of God’s word?
    We also talk about the names of various bible books, aleged problems placed at the foot of editing errors, and how place names have been changed, or names can have different spellings.

  • Quest for Truth 37 Life or Choice
    Our famous messed up openings give us a rough start, and our Meet the Hosts segment gets a little side tracked. Care to lend a voice to change our opening or closng creditws? Drop us a line, and we can talk about it
    What eis there that’s going on with the hosts? Texting in church, and getting into trouble with our wives… the usual kind of stuff.
    Our main topic is a heavy one. Abortion. Is it right, or wrong. Or is it as simple as that? When does a life start, or does it matter? Abortion is more a matter of morality and ethics, than whether science can put a fin ger on when life begins.
    In the end, if you hold abortion to be a sin, it’s not one that can’t be forgiven. God’s love and forgiveness is new each day. That’s what repentance is all about… leaving your past at the foot of the cross, and moving forward with Jesus in your future.
