Today I sat down with Patty Witkowsky, who is the Interim Director of Student Development at Colorado State University-Pueblo, and also the Chair of the Commission for Wellness with ACPA! We actually got connected through Meredith Mickaliger, guest from Episode 11, and it was a lot of fun to get to know Patty and hear her story. We talked about family, children, Patty’s time teaching English in Japan, exercise, scrap booking, and staying grounded while working and completing a PhD. Patty was also wonderful enough to put a write up of LIFE WORK BALANCES on the ACPA Commission for Wellness web page, and the write up will also be featured in their June newsletter!

Hi Everyone! Its Wednesday, which means it is time for another episode of LIFE WORK BALANCES!

Today I had the pleasure of interviewing Phillip Cockrell, who I and most people that know him call Flapp, who is the Director of Student Life at Mississippi University for Women. Flapp and I have known each other for a few years, and I really appreciated the opportunity to take time to learn more about him, hear his story and spend time reconnecting. We talked about his experience growing up in Mississippi, his time at The Ohio State University (a group that comes up somewhat often on the podcast), and his involvement in ACPA. We also talked about his love of racquetball, maintaining relationships, involvement in a faith community, as well as his involvement as an alumnae of Mississippi University for Women and the potential future of the Golden Gentlemen’s Club, a reference to MUW’s Golden Girls Club for long standing alumnae.

It was also a nice surprise to find that Heidi was the Director of the Counseling Center at my undergraduate institution, Cabrini College. Heidi and I had a really fun conversation about music, building a sense of community, networking and how that can be very helpful in searching for the next step in a career, as well as Heidi telling her amazing story about how she came to do the great work that she is doing.

Hi Everyone! Welcome to the final OUT AND PROUD WEEK Episode of LIFE WORK BALANCES!

Today, I had a great conversation with Shaun Travers. Shaun is a Campus Diversity Officer and Director of the LGBT Resource Center at UC San Diego, and is also my boss! Shaun and I had a great conversation about reading, civic engagement, giving back to one’s community, and baseball. It was especially interesting to talk about the type of civic engagement that Shaun participates in, because it can often time look very much like the work that he does at UC San Diego, so it was great to get his take on how he separates that and how one gives him energy to continue doing the other.

Today I had a great conversation with Kara Devaney, PhD Student at Loyal University Chicago. It was really fun to catch up with Kara, since we hadn’t had much time to catch up since she moved to Chicago from CA, and so it was fun for me to find out what she has been up to. We talking about the benefits of community building groups and social circles, computer science, math, knitting, bicycling, relationships, and the factors that go in to choosing a job. We also talked a bit about how we met each other and the interesting research that Kara was working on that lead us to meet.

This week at UC San Diego, we are celebrating Out & Proud Week, and so I wanted to take this week and highlight a few stories of LGBT Identified Student Affairs Professionals. There will be a new episode posted every day this week, and will go directly to iTunes/Archives. Next week things will go back to the regular one episode a week format.

Today, I had a great conversation with Michelle Strange, who is the Operations Coordinator for the LGBT Resource Center at UC San Diego. We had a great conversation about health, making lists, and veganism. Michelle was the first person to bring a prop to an interview with me, and it was fun to see her open up her book of lists to talk about lists. We also shared a lot of laughs. Michelle also mentioned her partner’s blog, VEGAN DELICIOUSNESS, which has a lot of great vegan food pictures!

Hi Everyone! It is another Wednesday, which means a new episode of LIFE WORK BALANCES!

Here is an interview that I did with Deven Rembert, who is the Coordinator of Intramural Sports at Millersville University. We spent some time talking about sports, leadership, and community connections as well as Deven’s involvement in M.A.L.E.S while he was at Umass Lowell, reading, working out, blogging (check out Deven’s blog: Motivational Mondays) and mentorship. Deven and I had met through an email that he sent me after hearing Episode 7 with Colber Prosper, and it was really great to build that relationship and use that as a connecting point. We also found out that we have a few friends in common.

Hi Everyone! Welcome to another episode of LIFE WORK BALANCES!

This week I had a great conversation with Meredith Mickaliger, who is a Community Director at Occidental College in Los Angeles. We had a really fun, long conversation about movies, Meredith’s Annual Oscars Party (the above picture was taken at this year’s), independent music and going to shows, as well as Meredith’s fun life of travel moving from New York to Virginia to Ohio to California. We also talked about the fun way that we met, including the times we could have met but didn’t, and bring up past guests Vanidy Bailey and Katie McAteer. This is certainly the longest interview I have ever done, and Meredith definitely has a lot to say about her passions.
