In the early 1900's, When Lili Elbe first dressed in women's clothing and modeled for her wife Gerda's paintings, both women thought she was playing a character. But they soon realized that her true identity was struggling to break through. With Gerda's support, they finally found a doctor in Germany who offered them hope: an experimental gender confirmation surgery.
