Per coloro che non conoscono cosa sia la temperatura colore, si tratta di una delle principali caratteristiche illuminotecniche che un lighting designer considera quando deve creare l’atmosfera di un ambiente. L’aspetto del colore è cruciale per capire come la luce impatta nell’ambiente e negli stati d’animo.

Ci sono diverse preferenze per le temperature colore, una di queste è legata al clima. I paesi con temperature climatiche mediamente alte e giornate molto luminose, preferiscono una luce più fredda che da loro un senso di “fuga dal calore”. La luce con colori più caldi è invece più apprezzata nei paesi freddi con lunghi e bui inverni, offrendo loro un senso di comfort. Inoltre, molte persone preferiscono determinate temperature colore perché danno loro un senso di familiarità e normalità.

Alcune temperature colore sono addirittura influenzate dall’architettura e dalla tecnologia. Ad esempio, nei paesi Asiatici dove i bamboo sono utilizzati per creare resort rustici, piuttosto che usare la tradizionale luce fredda, i lighting designer preferiscono prendere ispirazione da materiali e design con temperature colore più calde. Oltre a ciò, lo sviluppo e la tecnologia permettono ai designer di non solo creare una determinata atmosfera, ma anche di poterla cambiare con un solo interruttore.

Welcome back to Linea Light Podcast section. Today’s guest is Erin Slaviero, lighting designer at Delta Light Studio in Dubai, who will talk about cultural and geographical light.

Firstly, for those who don’t know what colour temperature is, it’s one of the main characteristics of light that lighting designers review when it comes to ambience and mood. The aspect of colour is crucial to understand in how the light impacts an environment.

There are different preferences to colour temperatures, and one reason is down to the climate. Countries that have higher average temperatures and bright days generally prefer cooler colour temperatures to give a sense of escape from the heat. Warmer colour temperatures are favoured in the cooler countries with long, dark winters to give a feeling of cosiness. Then, many people prefer certain colour temperatures as a sense of familiarity and norm.

Specific colour temperatures are also influenced by architecture and technology. For example, in places like Asia where bamboo is used to create rustic resorts, rather than using the traditional cool light, designers might prefer to use inspiration from materiality and design with a warmer colour temperature. Then, developments and technology permit to the designers to create an ambience and eventually change it at the flick of a switch.

Oggigiorno, gli esseri umani, in modo particolare le generazioni più giovani, abusano della luce artificiale e di quella prodotta degli schermi, le quali interferiscono con il loro benessere. Il nostro cervello reagisce alla luce generalmente in due modi: abbiamo il sistema visivo, che ci aiuta a formare le immagini nella nostra corteccia, e il sistema non-visivo, il quale regola il nostro ritmo circadiano. Per capire a quale profondità la luce impatta nel nostro benessere, è importante capire come funziona il sistema non-visivo: ad esempio, se ci esponiamo alla luce artificiale prima di dormire, smettiamo di produrre melatonina e iniziamo a produrre cortisolo. Praticamente ci stressiamo nel momento della giornata in cui dovremo maggiormente rilassarci perché una prolungata esposizione al cortisolo può comportare intensi sbalzi d’umore, ansia, depressione, minore capacità di concentrazione, emicrania, aumento di peso, infarti e ictus.

La missione delle ultime generazioni di LED dovrebbe concentrarsi sulla ricerca, focalizzandosi sul capire come limitare l’emissione di onde luminose. Probabilmente questo può essere fatto tramite una rivoluzionaria miscela di fosfori in grado di filtrare la luce blu e di migliorare lo spettro nella gamma rosso-arancio. La possibile responsabilità di un lighting designer è quella di considerare il problema della sovra illuminazione tenendolo sempre a mente e spiegandolo ad ogni singolo cliente.

Welcome back to Linea Light Podcast Section. In this episode we have a special guest joining us from London: Raluca Dascalita from Delta Lighting Design, and she will talk about “Lighting pollution: the side effects on humans of the new age”.

Nowadays, humans are abusing artificial light and screens to a point where their behaviour is interfering their well-being, especially the younger generations. Our brain reacts in two ways to light in general: we have the visual system, which helps us to form images on our cortex, and the non-visual system, which is the one that regulates our circadian rhythm. If we want to understand the depth to which light impacts our well-being, it is important to understand how the non-visual system works: for example, if we expose ourselves to artificial light right before sleep, we stop producing melatonin and we start producing cortisol. So, we basically expose ourselves to stress at a time when we are programmed to relax because prolonged exposure to cortisol leads to more intense mood shifts, anxiety, depression, lack of focus, migraines, weight gain, heart attacks, strokes.

The mission of the latest generation of LEDs should be the research by focusing on figuring out how to limit the actual emission of short wavelengths. And probably this can be done with a revolutionary blend of phosphors that filter out blue light but improve the spectrum in the red-orange range. The responsibility of the lighting designer might be to keep repeating that we have an over-illumination problem and then explain this problem to every single client.

Bentornati alla sezione podcast di Linea Light Group. Il nostro nuovo ospite è Carlo Pedata, lighting designer al lighting studio Foster & Partners di Londra che oggi ci parlerà dell’importanza del mock-up per creare soluzioni progettuali valide.

I mock-up sono creazioni illustrative di oggetti o sistemi, e nel settore illuminotecnico sono utilizzati per testare materiali architettonici ed effetti luminosi. Pianificare un mock-up può essere un grande risparmio di tempo ed evita sorprese sgradevoli durante la fase di costruzione di un progetto. Organizzare un mock-up è una buona opportunità per testare i dettagli e individuare le imperfezioni di progetto. In aggiunta, un mock-up è davvero utile per testare materiali particolari, per prendere decisioni in modo definitivo o fare comparazioni quando sono disponibili più opzioni. Solitamente ai clienti piace essere coinvolti nella progettazione del mock-up assieme al lighting designer. Tra gli aspetti positivi del mock-up, la sua creazione è anche un buon metodo per i lighting designer più giovani per fare pratica.

Quando non vengono realizzati i mock-up e qualcosa nel progetto non funziona, può essere difficile risolvere il problema. I cambiamenti poi possono causare ritardi e incremento dei costi rendendo il cliente non soddisfatto del design finale. L’utilizzo del mock-up è sempre una buona soluzione per accertarsi dei dettagli di un progetto, per ricevere dei feedback dai clienti, per testare l’effetto della luce su particolari materiali o quando c’è la necessità di comparare prodotti con caratteristiche simili.

Welcome back to Linea Light podcast section. Today’s guest is Carlo Pedata from Foster & Partners lighting studio in London and he will talk about the importance of mock-ups to deliver valuable solutions.

Mock-ups are illustrative creations of an object or system which, in this case, is identified with architectural materials and lighting effects. Plan a mock-up can save a lot of time and avoid surprises during the construction phase. Organize a mock-up is a great opportunity to test details and to understand all the imperfections in order to find the way to resolve them. In addition, a mock-up is very useful to test tricky materials and to make decisions or comparisons when there are more options. Clients usually appreciate to get involved in the mock-up project with the lighting designer. Then, mock-up is a good way to practice for the younger lighting designers.

The main risk of not creating a mock-up is when something is not working and it can be difficult to fix the problem. Changes can cause delays and increase of costs making the client unhappy about the final design. Carlo usually creates a mock-up when he is not sure about the details of a project, when he wants feedback from the client, when he needs to test the light effect on specific materials or compare different products with similar characteristics.

Ecco a voi il nuovo podcast di Linea Light riguardante il Biophilic Design, l’arte di fare crescere le piante decorative per interni in assenza della luce naturale. L’ospite è Martina Alagna, lighting designer di Nulty Lighting Studio a Londra.

Biophilic design deriva dal termine “biofilia” che indica la connessione tra uomo e natura. L’obiettivo del biophilic design è di integrare una maggiore quantità di elementi naturali negli ambienti interni per incrementare la salute fisica e mentale delle persone. È proprio la figura del lighting designer che ha il compito di creare la connessione tra ambiente interno ed ambiente esterno.

Per mantenere le piante sane e sostenere la crescita degli alberi è necessario riprodurre le condizioni della luce naturale esterna compresi i tempi in cui è buio. Per questa ragione, ci sono diversi parametri da considerare in base alle esigenze delle piante e degli alberi. Diverse lunghezze d’onda della luce hanno diversi impatti nella salute delle piante in base ai colori rilasciati, e grazie alla composizione chimica dei LED, le lunghezze d’onda possono essere adattate. Inoltre, dobbiamo considerare che le piante e le persone percepiscono la luce in modo diverso.

Martina conclude dicendo che il modo più efficace e sostenibile per supportare il biophilic design è considerare l’esposizione alla luce di tutti gli elementi includendo le persone. Per questo motivo, è necessario considerare quanta luce richiede un determinato spazio per poi inserire l’elemento di luce artificiale garantendo il benessere di tutti gli elementi.

This is the new podcast of Linea Light about Biophilic Design, the art of growing ornamental plants in the absence of natural light. The guest is Martina Alagna, a London-based lighting designer from Nulty Lighting studio.

Biophilic design comes from the term “biophilia” that indicates the human’s connection with the nature. The aim of the biophilic design is to integrate more natural elements on the indoors environment to give people more physical and mental health. In fact, the lighting designer has the role to create a connection between the inside and the outside environment.

To maintain healthy plants and trees’ growth is necessary to replay the external natural lighting conditions inside comprehending the period of darkness. For this reason, there are different parameters to consider depending on the needs of the plants and trees. Different wavelengths of light have different impacts on plant health depending on their colours, and thanks to the chemical composition of LEDs the wavelengths can be adapted. Moreover, we need to consider that plants and humans receive light in different ways.

Martina concludes by saying that the most essential and sustainable way to support biophilic design is the daylight exposure for all the living elements including humans. For this reason, it is necessary to consider the lighting level of the space to find the area to apply the artificial light considering all the elements’ wealth.

Nel podcast di oggi approfondiremo il tema landscape lighting insieme ad Arianna Ghezzi, Senior Lighting Designer presso lo studio Lighting Design International di Londra, che ci aiuterà a capire quali sono le caratteristiche fondamentali della progettazione illuminotecnica dell’esterno e come rendere il paesaggio notturno un’esperienza unica!

Quando parliamo di landscape lighting non possiamo non considerare il rapporto tra spazio indoor e outdoor perché nella progettazione di un’illuminazione che avrà lo scopo di valorizzare al massimo la parte esterna di una casa, di un complesso residenziale o di un hotel, è fondamentale capire come la persona percepirà la luce dall’interno.

Arianna ci spiega quali sono le migliori soluzioni da adottare per ottenere un effetto magico sia per chi guarda il giardino da dentro l’edificio sia per chi vive lo spazio esterno. Fondamentale è il posizionamento delle luci in differenti livelli, per aggiungere profondità e dimensione allo spazio, e la valorizzazione degli arbusti che grazie al gioco delle loro ombre naturali possono creare un’atmosfera unica nel suo genere.

Ma se lo spazio da illuminare non fosse un giardino vero e proprio ma un cavedio (o pozzo di luce)? Questo elemento architettonico che ha lo scopo di garantire luce e aria ai locali è un luogo perfetto per ospitare un piccolo giardino. In questo caso il rapporto tra la luce naturale proveniente dai lucernari e quella interna artificiale diventa fondamentale e permette, se equilibrato ed armonico, di offrire atmosfere rilassanti, romantiche o addirittura misteriose.

Infine nella parte conclusiva del podcast Arianna ci racconta quali sono gli errori più comuni nel landscape lighting.

In today’s podcast, we will explore the theme of landscape lighting together with Arianna Ghezzi, Senior Lighting Designer at the Lighting Design International studio in London, who will help us understand the central characteristics of outdoor lighting design and how to render the night-time landscape a unique experience!

When we talk about landscape lighting, we must consider the relationship between indoor and outdoor spaces, given that in designing illumination that will serve to make the most of the exterior of a home, a residential complex or a hotel, it is vital that we understand how the person will perceive the light from within.

Arianna outlines the best solutions to adopt in order to achieve a magical effect both for those who look out at the garden from within the building and for those who are enjoying the outdoor space. Positioning the light points at various levels is fundamental in order to add depth and dimension to the space, as is enhancing the shrubbery which – thanks to the play of its natural shadows – can create a unique atmosphere.

But what if the space to be illuminated is not an actual garden but is a courtyard or lightwell? This architectural feature that aims to ensure the premises have light and air is the perfect place to set up a quaint garden. In this case, the rapport between the natural light coming from the skylights and the artificial internal light becomes key. If balanced and harmonious, such light is able to offer relaxing, romantic or even mysterious atmospheres.

Finally, as the podcast nears its end, Arianna shares with us the most common mistakes in landscape lighting.

Bentornati al nuovo episodio dei podcast di Linea Light. L’ospite di oggi è Marta Coda, lighting designer libero professionista di Madrid, che ci parlerà di garden lighting.

Come sostiene Marta, un progetto di garden design deve iniziare tenendo in considerazione “del panorama” che il cliente ha di fronte per la maggior parte della sua giornata. Partendo da questo spunto, Marta spiega che sono presenti diversi livelli in cui vengono disposte le piante e, di conseguenza, diversi livelli d’illuminazione da considerare. Per questo è necessario focalizzarsi sulla gestione della luce e dei suoi limiti di spazio, per poi progettare azioni specifiche per ciascun livello in modo da rendere l’ambiente attraente oltre che confortevole. La gestione degli spazi orizzontali e verticali è tutto. Marta imposta il suo approccio di progettazione partendo dalle superfici verticali, per le quali sfrutta faretti ad incasso per esterni che con diverse ottiche riescono ad ottenere effetti unici. I proiettori, una categoria molto flessibile, sono utili sia per dare luce a grandi aree (installabili sia a terra che su palo o su tronchi degli alberi) oppure per enfatizzare elementi specifici come ad esempio porzioni di architettura attraverso proiettori d’accento. Infine, i paletti progettati per dare luce a superfici orizzontali, sono utili come segna percorso o per illuminare le piante più basse. Caratteristica fondamentale nel garden design è la riduzione dell’abbagliamento luminoso. Per questo tema Marta ci consiglia di prescrivere sempre apparecchi di illuminazione con sorgente recessa oppure con appositi filtri o accessori che ne permettono il controllo dell’abbagliamento. L’inserimento di qualsiasi prodotto all’interno dell’ambiente in modo armonioso è doveroso, e a tal proposito la componente “finitura” risulta importantissima per questa operazione. Infine la forma dei nostri apparecchi illuminotecnici, faretti ad incasso da soffitto o da terra, paletti o proiettori, deve essere piccola e con un design curato in modo tale che siano piacevoli alla vista anche durante il giorno.

Welcome back to Linea Light Podcast section. Today’s guest is Marta Coda, who is a freelance lighting designer in Madrid, and she will talk about garden lighting.

As she says, a project of garden design has to start by “planning the panorama” that the client has in front of him for the majority of the time during the day. Starting from this point, there are several different layering levels of plants to consider and, consequently, of light, so it is essential to focus on the management of the light and its space limits. It is also needed to organize specific actions on the different layers in order to build comfortable and beautiful spaces. The management of the horizontal and the vertical spaces is fundamental. Marta gives priority to lead the vertical surface and, for this reason, uplights will be very useful thanks to the effects of the different optics. As regards the projectors, which are a flexible category, they are very helpful to give light to big areas (installed on poles, on the ground or on tree’s trunk) or to emphasize specific elements, as for example pieces of architecture, through accent light. At the end, bollards are made to give light to horizontal surface, useful to mark ways or to bright low vegetation. A key feature in garden design is the reduction of glare. For this reason, Marta suggests to always prescribe lighting fixtures with recessed source of light or with special filters or accessories that allow the control of the glare. It is also important to choose small and beautiful lighting materials, both downlights and uplights, bollards and projectors, because of they can be good to see during the day too. Each lighting product introduced on the landscape has to be in harmony with the rest of the place so we need to take care about finishes.

Per questo motivo utilizzare questi strumenti richiede una certa dose di esperienza. Come ultimo punto di questo podcast, Jelena parla dei renders e di quanto sia importante la rappresentazione della luce in modo realistico in modo da evitare di creare delle aspettative sbagliate.
