  • People, Planet, Profit: the Pillars of Triple Bottom Line | Lara Elbaz and Maria Gildemontes

Today we talk with the lighting designers Lara Elbaz and Maria Gildemontes about how their love for light, ecology, social welfare, human rights and a common approach have united them in a unique project from which they design lighting projects sensible to architecture, emotions, health and the environment.

Lara and Maria both believe that our actions get an impact on the environment, so they study and research the different philosophies that try to respond the climate change problem and design a method aimed at reduce the impact that our profession has on the environment. Their research shows that there are a lot of aspects that go beyond the energy savings that must also be considered and integrated within the triple bottom line framework, providing answers to each of these pillars: People, Planet, Profit.

  • Hins Light the environmental decontamination that protects people | Dr. Michelle Maclean

In this episode of Linea Light Podcast Section we talk about the scientific research behind the new HINS technology with our special guest Dr. Michelle Maclean from the University of Strathclyde’s department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering.

HINS-light is the abbreviation for high-intensity narrow-spectrum light, and this is an antimicrobial technology which uses visible light in the violet-blue region, with peak activity at 405 nm wavelength. The research conducted by Professor Scott MacGregor, Professor John G Anderson, Dr Michelle Maclean and Professor Gerry Woolsey at the University of Strathclyde has focused over the years on establishing its potential for infection control applications. This technology is extremely important as it can be used in any area within hospitals thanks to its ability to continuously decontaminate the air and surfaces without changing or influencing user habits. Being able to maintain low levels of environmental contamination, means a cleaner environment, and a reduced risk of infection arising from environmental sources.

A research of great value, most of all in these periods in which the time spent at home or in an office is prevalent compared to that spent outside and in which light is a fundamental element for man, for its well-being and for the safety of indoor activities.

  • Retail: The connection between light and materials - Waleed Fakousa

Retail lighting is of crucial importance, even managing to influence sales. The purpose of good lighting, inside a shop and in shop windows, is to showcase the products on display and guide customers in their purchase. A careful analysis of the materials that will be illuminated is necessary because this attention will also determine the level of quality customers expect to find in a shop. Light and Materials form an inseparable pairing and, in the lighting design phase, the necessary resources must be used to search for the right combination.

In the technical lighting design of a façade, the two important components of “light” must be taken into consideration: on one hand, the technical aspect and on the other, the sensation that it can evoke in the end user. At the same time, the technical lighting project of a façade is also the sum of three essential ingredients: the architecture of the building, the setting in which it is located and its function. Therefore, the assessment of these factors leads to the selection of the most suitable products, optics and colour temperatures for the final purpose of best enhancing the façade in its entirety, as well as in its details.
