Laura Holzman | Engagierte Kunstgeschichte
The lecture by art historian Prof. Dr Laura Holzman (Indianapolis, USA) introduces engaged art history as an approach that encompasses different forms of public scholarship, ranging from exhibitions and publications for broader audiences to collaborative projects with partners beyond the university. Drawing on examples such as The House Life Project (2017–2020), a community-based art initiative, and the exhibition Monumental Changes: History and Power in Public Art (2021), she demonstrates how collaboration can open new perspectives and make research more participatory and socially relevant.
The lecture also reflects on the ethical and methodological importance of collaboration and highlights the growing potential of engaged art history both within and beyond academia. Highlighting research on engaged art history created specifically for scholars and museum professionals it aims to encourage art historians and museum professionals to integrate collaborative and participatory approaches more confidently into their research, teaching, and curatorial practice.
