    Publisher's Summary:
A good art collection is always much more than the sum of its parts. This applies with especial force to collections of contemporary work. A collection of this kind, whether the collector intends it to be so or not, is always a portrait - a reflection in the mirror of a particular epoch, and, willy-nilly, a self-portrait of the person who takes the trouble to bring it together.

    Title: Rubens in the Making

    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 8 mins

    Release date: 01-09-18
    Publisher: Cv Publications
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
The new exhibition at the National Gallery in London ought to be yet another triumph for an institution that is now running a very ambitious exhibition program. Who can forget the shows recently devoted to Titian, El Greco, and Vermeer? Yet this event makes a curiously uneasy effect.
There are several, not just one, reasons for this. The first is that Rubens, of all great artists the one who enjoyed the greatest degree of worldly success, had distinctly uneasy beginnings. Of sound Flemish bourgeois stock, he was born in 1577 at Siegen in Westphalia. His parents had fled there to escape persecution, because they were Calvinist converts.
His father, Jan, a lawyer, became the intimate adviser and eventually the lover of Princess Anna of Saxony, the second wife of William the Silent, the champion of the Protestant cause. When the affair was discovered, Jan was placed under house arrest but was eventually allowed to go to Cologne, where he died in 1587. His wife, with her four children, returned to Antwerp, where they all re-converted to Catholicism. The young Rubens was placed as a page in an aristocratic household, but was later allowed to study as a painter.

  • What It Is to Curate Audiobook by Edward Lucie-Smith

Title: What It Is to Curate
Subtitle: Cv/Visual Arts Research, Book 174
    Author: Edward Lucie-Smith
    Narrator: Joe Van Riper
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 23 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-09-18
    Publisher: Cv Publications
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
Anyone who Googles the phrase curatorial theory will immediately come upon quite a long list of suggested websites. Sometimes it is a little difficult to be sure if the texts offered are intended to be taken entirely seriously. What about this, for example?
"The answer to the question 'what is curating?' was already there but not as a question we pose ourselves in the arrogance of our disciplinary address. Its formulation would be otherwise: no answer but rather response to a call. The call to which it responds has already been placed to curating."
However, if I hack my way through this dense thicket of language, I find myself in agreement with what it seems to be trying to say, which is that curating an exhibition - or for that matter, a website - is not an end in itself.

  • The Artist and the Artwork Audiobook by Edward Lucie-Smith

Title: The Artist and the Artwork
Subtitle: Studies in World Art, Book 75
    Author: Edward Lucie-Smith
    Narrator: Tim Carper
    Format: Unabridged
    Length: 13 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-09-18
    Publisher: Cv Publications
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
Works of art have often been endowed by their audience with talismanic force. Their impact exceeds the visual impression they make. This seems natural enough when we consider the fact that the most ambitious works of art produced by ancient civilizations were religious.
To those who originally encountered them, they seemed to speak directly from the gods. Their makers were very seldom recorded, though the names of those who ordered them to be made - pharaohs, emperors and kings - quite frequently survive.

    Length: 8 mins
    Language: English
    Release date: 01-08-18
    Publisher: Cv Publications
Genres: Arts & Entertainment, Visual Arts
    Publisher's Summary:
Very seldom in London can a major show of modern and contemporary art at a highly respected national institution have received such universally negative reviews. As I write this, not all the verdicts on the Royal Academys exhibition of Modern British Sculpture have been delivered. However, it is already clear that the majority will be hostile.
Paradoxically, it is this, more than any other factor, which makes it seem like an important event - a turning point if you like. And in fact the hostility of the reviews may bring it a much bigger audience than if the reactions had simply been lukewarm. People will come to see what the scandal is about.
