Interesting book, terrible reading

Amazing that this reading passed quality control. The reader displays no understanding, reads with no nuance, pace or personality. I'm convinced that the voice is computer generated. I am very interested in the books ideas but lose the will to listen within minutes. I have never posted my views on any subject before but this product has infuriated me. I'd love to know what others think.

almost ruined by narration

This is a really interesting book, but the narration is terrible. I totally agree with the previous reviewer. He sounds like a robot, and can't pronounce the names of people and places properly.

The book is good, just on the section where the 'business plan' of cats is compared to that of pandas. Very funny and a great way to talk about adaptability and the ways that both species and countries can get stuck in a rut. The book explains all kinds of economic stuff in an interesting and enjoyable way.

The publishers need to be ashamed of the reader though, and their own slackness for not reviewing the audio book properly.

Absorbing book but iffy narration

This was an interesting and absorbing book, full of surprising insights and written with verve and humour. Economic history can be a dry subject, but the author keeps it moving, illustrating his points with good anecdotes, making you look at familiar events with a different eye.

Unfortunately the narration was not in the same class. Pacing was very uneven and the tone almost wooden such was the lack of variation - I got the strong impression that he had not read the book before his narration so disjointed was it in places.

I was really impressed by what Dr. Kachroo had to say. It was an innovative speech complete with exactly the kind of out of the box thinking that we need in this transitional era of international financial regulation.

the type of thinking that we need

This is a well-thought out proposal for a tribunal to settle international financial disputes. This is critical to solve the jurisdictional issues that the system currently faces. Policymakers would greatly benefit from listening to and internalizing the lessons of the lecture.

Thought provoking piece!

This is a thoughtful and thought provoking talk about the cycles that inform international regulation and dispute resolution. We need as many ideas about frameworks for cross-border conflict resolution in private and public arenas as possible. This talk helps the discussion along. I would like to see the journal article on which the speech is based!

Be Prepared to Scream WTF!

Would you consider the audio edition of Money for Nothing to be better than the print version?

my retention is always better in print, but overall this was a good non-fiction book for audio presentation

Who was your favorite character and why?

The overall presentation of the material was excellent although there were a few occasions where the authors went off on a tangent -- e.g., some non-board related financial/housing crisis details. When the book stuck to its thesis about just how worthless and dangerous so many of today's board members are, the book was great. Too many times you find yourself shaking your head in disgust by the lack of director independence. Most of the author's conclusions are probably consistent with those of someone who would buy this book. I ordered this book because I believe so many corporate failures and so much corporate mediocrity could be averted by a truly strong independent board. What was most frustrating for me was that you're left believing nothing will actually change. The system is broken (rigged) and, sadly, there is no incentive for anyone with true power to change it. Therefore, poor to mediocre CEO performance will continue earning outsized pay packages. CEOs will continue to use shareholder money to take giant risks that if successful will pay even more outsized returns while failure will be showered with golden parachutes that any executive would be overjoyed to earn in a two year window. Shareholders matter very little in this world. The boards are more concerned with covering their ass than protecting the shareholders they allegedly represent.
